Exposure is one of the obvious obstacles in the process of teaching and learning English. In figuring out one prospective exposure in students’ daily life, this study investigates the effect of newspapers as a medium in enhancing students’ English achievement, especially writing skill. The objective of this study is to find out whether students assigned to read English newspapers write better than those who are not. The subjects of the study were 85 English department students who were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. A quasi-experimental was employed in this study. For six executive weeks, before the students were asked to write, the students in the experimental group were assigned to read English newspapers, whereas then students in the control group were not.  By using Mann-Whitney and one-way ANOVA tests, the results of this study show insignificant results (0, 273; 0,194; and 0,179). As the high proficient students also could not take the newspapers for their learning benefits, affective and intrinsic factors such as awareness and willingness had to be considered.

The gaps in feedback implementation bring this study to unravel students’ perception on employing self-directed feedback in writing. As the results of the previous studies on this concern are non-comparable, this study aims is to unravel students’ perception on employing self-directed feedback in writing. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, this study involved 23 English Department students of FKIP Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The results show that students perceive self-directed feedback positively. It is seen from the correction that they make after the implementation of the self-directed feedback. However, students’ reflection on the use of self-directed feedback shows various perceptions. Therefore, teacher can wisely design which feedback given to whom. The students who are able to provide self-directed feedback can achieve maximum result of learning, and teacher can focus to assist the other students who need teacher feedback during the writing process. It is suggested to further researchers to investigate students’ emotional responses during the feedback in writing process or to investigate other factors that influence feedback.

Writing skills are rarely taught since many teachers encounter issues such as students' poor command of English vocabulary, inability to write in the correct English format, insufficient time allotted to aid each student, and a lack of teacher expertise regarding teaching strategies. For students, appropriate writing skills are required. Activities such as training for English teachers on approaches for teaching suitable and engaging writing skills to students are required. The Picture Word Inductive Model will be taught as a tool for practicing writing descriptive text abilities. This activity employs a participatory technique based on Kurt Lewin's theory, which stresses the target participants' active participation throughout the training process, from participating in training activities to completing training assignments. A total of 15 teachers from various agencies in Kabupaten Banjar participated in this community service project. Starting with the explanation, questions and answers session, small group discussions, reflection, and evaluation, the exercise went off without a hitch. The Picture Word Inductive Model is a learning paradigm that they have just acquired and will employ in teaching writing. Because there were steps of categorizing and refining it into phrases and paragraphs, participants concluded that utilizing this model would be better than using visual media. As a result, they can assist students with their writing. In a nutshell, English teachers in Kabupaten Banjar have a good conceptual understanding of how to teach descriptive text writing skills. Finally, the participants were able to create a learning plan for writing descriptive text skills using Picture Word Inductive Model.

Different departments in a university have different terms with general English. English for Specific Purpose (ESP) helps students with different departments learn specific terms. Social studies study program is one of the majors that its students find it rather hard to comprehend the content and terms related to their major. Think-Pair-Share (TPS) on reading helps develop students' ability to understand the text. This study is aimed to find out the difference between the students who are taught using ESP text with Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Technique and those who are not taught with the TPS technique. This study employs a quasi-experimental design. The study objects were the students of the social studies study program, which were classified into experimental and control groups. The research instruments were related to social studies in English passages. Posttest data were calculated and used to determine the treatment's effectiveness or any significant difference in each group. The data were analyzed by an analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test the hypotheses. The study results reveal that experimental and control classes have a significant difference in the mean; 76.63 is an experimental group mean that was higher than the control group mean that was 74.64. It shows that the students who used the Think-Pair-Share technique had better reading comprehension on ESP text than the students who did not use the technique. This is due to the implementation's steps that emphases students' performance and togetherness on doing their activities in the classroom activities to develop their ability in language skills.
