Abstract

The aims of this study were to estimate the heritabilities, examine the effects of dairy femaleselection and calculate the genetic gains on milk yield and milk composition in Baturraden Dairy CattleBreeding and Forage Centre (Balai Besar Perbibitan Ternak Unggul dan Hijauan Pakan Ternak /BBPTU–HPT Baturraden), Indonesia. The first lactation records of 221 dairy cows from 2006 to 2014were used. Heritabilities were estimated by paternal half-sib correlation. Comparison of averageperformances between daughter population (Ā) and initial dam population before selection ( ) wereconducted by Z-test. Annual genetic gain was calculated as genetic gain per generation (the differencesbetween Ā dan ) divided by generation interval. Heritabilities for milk fat percentage (FP), milk fatyield (FY), milk protein percentage (PP) and milk protein yield (PY) were 0.46, 0.30, 0.28 and 0.17,respectively. A significant increase (P=0.025) in the total milk yield (TMY) from the first generation(G1) to the second generation (G2) resulted in a high significant decrease in the FP (P=0.004). Geneticgains of TMY, FP and PP were 9.76 kg, -0.04% and -0.01% per year, respectively. It is concluded thatselection for higher TMY only negatively affect FP and PP. Selection can be applied based on FY to avoid the decrease of FP. Negative effects of genetic-environmental interaction resulted in slowergenetic gain because the imported cows needed time to adapt to the local environment.

Abstract

A study of genetic variation of four blood protein loci and three egg white loci in three breeds ofIndonesian local ducks (Magelang duck = MAD, Tegal duck = TED and Mojosari duck= MOD) wasinvestigated by using polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The result showed that four bloodprotein loci (Pre-albumin, Albumin, Transferrin and Post-transferrin) and three egg white loci(Ovalbumin, Ovoglobulin and Conalbumin) were found to be polymorphic in three breeds of localducks. There was no difference on blood and egg white protein polyimorphism. The average value ofheterozygosity on three breeds of local ducks had a genetic potential to determine the controlled matingsystem and selection to obtain pure line. The closest phylogenetic relationship among the three breeds oflocal ducks occurred between MAD and TED.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the path analysis of recording system innovation factorsaffecting adoption of goat farmers. This study was conducted from January to February 2014 inPringapus District, Semarang Regency by using survey method. For determining the location, this studyused purposive sampling method. The amount of respondents were determined by quota samplingmethod. Total respondents randomly chosed were 146 farmers. The data were descriptively andquantitatively analyzed by using path analysis of statistical package for the social science (SPSS) 16.Independent variables in this study were internal factor, motivation, innovation characteristics,information source, and dependent variable was adoption. Analysis of linear regression showed thatthere was no significant effect of internal factor on adoption, so that it was important to use the trimmingmethod in path analysis. The result of path analysis showed that the influence of motivation, innovationcharacteristics and information source on adoption were 0.168; 0.720 and 0.09, respectively. Innovationcharacteristics were the greatest effect on adoption. In conclusion, by improving innovationcharacteristics of respondent through motivation and information source may significantly increase theadoption of recording system in goat farmers.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of morphometrical measurements inthe female waterfowls. The animals used in this research were 90 ducks , 90 muscovy-ducks and 90mule-ducks in Bulukumba district of Brebes regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Parameters measuredwere maxilla length, neck length, body length, chest circumstance, wing length, chest length, femurlength and tibia length. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Analysis System ver. 9.1. Muscovyduckgenerally had the largest of size, followed by mule-duck and then duck. The most discriminantvariables were showed by chest length and chest circumstance. Muscovy-duck and mule-duck hadclosest genetic distance (3.974870) than both of the distance between duck and mule duck (14.10), andmuscovy-duck and duck (24.73). The smallest errorness level in grouping was showed in duck 1%followed by 2% in mule-duck and 3% in muscovy-duck.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to estimate the actual milk yield and to compare the estimation accuracyof cumulative monthly record to actual milk yield by regression method. Materials used in this experimentwere records relating to milk yield and pedigree. The obtained data were categorized into 2 groups i.e. AgeGroup I (AG I) that was cow calving at < 36 months old as many as 33 cows with 33 lactation records andAG II that cows calving e” 36 months old as many as 44 cows with 105 lactation records. The first three toseven months data were used to estimate actual milk yield. Results showed that mean of milk yield/ head/lactation at AG I (2479.5 ± 461.5 kg) was lower than that of AG II (2989,7 ± 526,8 kg). Estimated milk yieldsfor three to seven months at AG I were 2455.6±419.7; 2455.7±432.9; 2455.5±446.4; 2455.6±450.8; 2455,64± 450,8; 2455,5 ± 459,3 kg respectively, meanwhile at AG II was 2972.3±479.8; 2972.0±497.2; 2972.4±509.6;2972.5±523.6 and 2972.5±535.1 respectively. Correlation coefficients between estimated and actual milkyield at AG I were 0.79; 0.82; 0.86; 0.86 and 0.88, respectively, meanwhile at AG II were 0.65; 0.66; 0.67;0.69 and 0.72 respectively. In conclusion, the mean of estimated milk yield at AG I was lower than AG II.The best record to estimate actual milk yield both at AG I and AG II were the seven cumulative months.

Abstract

The objectives of study were to investigate follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) level in four groups beef cow composed of Ongole Grade cow delivered twinning calves (OGT), Ongole Grade cow delivered single calf (OGS), Simmental crossbred cow delivered twinning calves (SCT) and Simmental crossbred cow delivered single calf (SCS). Morphometric traits included body weight, heart girth, body length, shoulder height, and abdominal circumference were taken from cows. Cows were reared by farmers in Grobogan and Kendal Regency, Central Java. Blood serums of cows were taken at estrus. FSH and LH concentration were measured with enzyme linked fluorescent assays (ELFA) technique.FSH and LH concentration were compared between OGT, OGS, SCT, and SCS. Result showed that there were no significant difference of FSH and LH concentration between OGT and OGS, between OGT and SCT, between OGT and SCS. There were no significant difference between OGS and SCT, and OGS and SCS. There were no significant difference between SCT and SCS. Low concentration of FSH and LH in all cows was related to suckle period, when prolactin concentration was inversely related to FSH and LH concentration.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine leucocyte and offspring production of guinea pig (Cavia cobaya) giving Anredera cordifolia leaf extract. Materials used were female 16 heads of guinea pig with body weight of 425g. The treatments were an extract of A. cordifolia leaf at doses of 0, 10, 50 and 90 mg/head, designated as T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively. A. cordifolia leaf extract was administered orally from 10 days prepartum to 10 days postpartum. Blood was taken at 10 days prepartum and 10 days postpartum. Total birth of the offspring was observed. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and if there was effect of treatment, then continued with Duncan multiple range test and Chi-Square test for fetal production between the given A. cordifolia leaf extract and control. The result showed that there was no significant difference for 10 days prepartum after addition of A cordifolia leaf extract treatment. The postpartum treated showed a total 50 mg/head level increaed for monocytes than that of level 0, 10 and 90 mg/head. Ten days postpartum treatment showed the total increase for leucocyte and monocytes total were 50 and 90 mg/head, respectively compared to 10 mg/head level. Total lymphocyte of 90 mg/head increased compared to level 10 and 50 mg/head. The highest total neutrophil as found at level of 50 mg/head which increased compared to the level of 0 and 10 mg/head. ProvisioningA. cordifolialeaf extract at doses level of 50 and 90 mg/head could increase litter size (P<0.05; χ2=9.267) and decreased offspring mortality (P<0.05; χ2=6.4). In conclusion, by giving 50 mg/head A. cordifolia leaf extract could increase leucocyte profile and offspring production of guinea pig.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop models for determination the superiority of Holstein bulls as a producer of frozen semen and inheritance of the genetic traits of milk production. The ability of the bull to produce frozen semen per years was analyzed descriptively. Reproductive efficiency of frozen semen in artificial insemination was calculated by service per conception (S/C). Estimation sire breeding value for milk production was calculated by contemporary comparison (CC) method. Model of superiority bulls was analyzed by Structural Equation Model with Partial Least Square method (SEM-PLS). Total average production of frozen semen was 23,109±14,970 doses/year. The average S/C was 2.83. The CC value ranged from -1,865.7 until +1,636.3. Potency of milk production resulted from lactation cow offspring per bulls ranged from 951,749.2 to 52,347,822.9 liters per year. The economic value of bulls based on the potency milk production of offspring ranges from IDR 4,758,745,999 to IDR 261,739,114,505. The superiority of bulls was affected significantly (P<0.05) by frozen semen production, reproductive efficiency and average milk production of daughter cows (DC) as much as 0.59, -0.53 and 0.33, respectively. In conclusion, the superiority of bull can be explained about 78.3% by the production of frozen semen production, reproductive efficiency and milk production of offspring.
