Abstract

The research aimed to find out the translation strategies applied in the subtitling and the dubbing of idiomatic expressions in the television series WandaVision (2021). Moreover, the research also aimed to reveal whether the subtitling and the dubbing of the idiomatic expressions are source language-oriented or target languageoriented. The descriptive qualitative approach was applied in the research. The data were analyzed using the taxonomy for rendering extralinguistic cultural references in subtitling proposed by Pedersen. The taxonomy was used to analyze the data since it was specifically designed for subtitling and audiovisual translation. The results show that there are various strategies applied in subtitling and dubbing. In subtitling, the translation strategies applied are substitution, direct translation, generalization, and the combination of substitution and omission. The translation strategies applied in the subtitling are related to spatial and temporal constraints. As a comparison, the translation strategies applied in dubbing are substitution, direct translation, generalization, and the combination of substitution and specification. The strategies are applied based on the consideration that spoken language features should be included in the dubbing. Based on the translation strategies applied, it can be concluded that both the subtitling and the dubbing are target language-oriented.

Abstract

Abstract

Translating economic terms is a challenging task since the translator needs to understand economics and be able to convey the concepts to the target language. In translating economic books for lay readers, the translator also needs to consider the lexical choice so that the target readers can understand the translation easily. This study aims to analyze the translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms in the book The Psychology of Money written by Morgan Housel and to find out whether the translation is oriented to the source language or the target language. The data in this study were analyzed qualitatively by using the taxonomy of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet. The results showed that there were seven translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms: borrowing, calque, literal translation, a combination of borrowing and literal translation, transposition, equivalence, and combination of transposition and borrowing. The literal translation is the most dominant translation procedure applied to translate economic terms. Based on the analysis of the translation procedures, it can be concluded that the translation of economic terms in this study is oriented to the source language.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of shift in the translation of the book “The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down” by Haemin Sunim. The qualitative method was employed in this study. The data was collected through document analysis. Following the data collection procedure, the data were categorized and analyzed using the theories proposed by Catford (1965) and Machali (2009). The result shows that there are six types of shifts found in the translation of the book. They are level shift, structure shift, class shift, unit shift, intra-system shift, and meaning shift. Unit shift was the most prevalent translation shift, followed by class shift. There are cases of obligatory shifts due to different linguistic systems of the source language and the target language. In such contexts, the shifts are necessary to achieve accuracy and acceptability in the target language. In addition, there are also optional shifts due to the translator’s preference or different cultural backgrounds. It is applied to increase the readability in the target language.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the sign and also explain the message conveyed by the COVID-19 poster from the Facebook account of World Health Organization South-East Asia Region – WHO SEARO. The source of the data was downloaded from the Facebook account. The researchers used several methods for analyzing the data. There are three theories used in this study. The first one is the theory of meaning by Barthes (in Chandler, 2000) which consists of denotative meaning and connotative meaning. The second theory is the visual aspect and verbal aspect by Dyer (1986) and the last one is the theory of color terms by Wierzbicka (1998). The researchers analyzed two posters from the WHO SEARO Facebook account by using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study shows that data 1 has 6 visual signs and 5 verbal signs and data 2 consists of 5 visual signs and also 5 verbal signs. Besides visual and verbal signs, the posters also contain the denotative and connotative meanings. In analyzing the connotative meaning, it is also related to the analysis of color term.
