Abstract

The research was found on the topic about Presupposition of the Main Character’s Utterances in Batak Toba Movie Alani Hapogoson. This study was aimed at identifying the types of presupposition, most dominant type and to elaborate the realization of the types of presupposition by the main character in Alani Hapogoson movie.. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from the utterances of the main character’s utterances in batak toba movie alani hapogoson. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research based on Creswell’s theory. The result of this research was types of presupposition can be found in Alani Hapogoson movie are existensial (34%), Factive (26%), Lexical (10%), Structural (14%), Non-factive (2%), and Counterfactual (14%). The dominant type of presupposition that used by main character utterances was existensial presupposition, because used utterances formed by proper names, noun phrase and possesive to show the existence of someone.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of logico-semantic relations and the use of logico-semantic relations of Raja Parhata in the Saur Matua ceremony. This study was conducted by applying the descriptive qualitative method by Flick (2009). The source of data was Raja Parhata in the Saur Matua ceremony. The result of this research was types of logico-semantic relations can be found in Raja Parhata are paratactic elaboration (44,28%), paratactic enhancement (21,42%), hypotactic elaboration (7,14%), paratactic extension (11,42%), hypotactic enhancement (12,85%), hypotactic extension (2,85%). Moreover, the realization of logico-semantic relations in Raja Parhata’s utterances mostly appears by using conjunction jadi (so), molo (if), and holani (that all), adverbial clause dungi (after that), verb baen (play), and preposition tu (to).

Abstract

This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from the folklore book and interviews with the translator of the folktale Putri Lopian. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research. The results of this research showed that there were 9% sentences by literal translation, 10 sentences by semantic translation, 5% sentences by adaptation translation, 31% sentences by free translation, 1% sentence by idiomatic translation and 10% sentences by communicative translation. The total number of sentences from the data consisted of 76% sentences. It was found there were seven out of eight types of translation methods Literal, Faithful, Semantic, Adaptation, Free, Idiomatic and Communicative uses based on the text in the Folktale. The reason why the translator used free translation as the dominant method was that he did not follow any theories or approaches of translation when he was translating the text; he thought that the audience was a child. so that he arranged the language to be easy to understand.  Keywords: folktale book; translation methods; text

Abstract

The study deals with Translation Shift in Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of category shift that found in Sophie’s world. It also aims to describe the translation shift that affects the reader perception in the novel of Sophie’s world. The research method of this study used qualitative research. The sources data from both novel of source language and target language in Sophie’s World novel and also interviewed five informants who known about translation shift. The data were analyzed by using Catford’s theory. The findings of the study show that there were 4 types of category shift. Each types of category shift namely: (1) structure shift, (2) class shift, (3) unit shift, (4) intra system shift. Those category shifts occur because the grammatical systems of the Source Language and Target Language are different, that is why the translator is dictated by the target language. It also affects reader reception that cost of lack understanding base on expressing the real meaning.

Abstract

This research is a study that analyzes the personality traits of three main characters’ (simba, mufasa and scar) in the movie The Lion King . This study aims to determine the character and characterization of the main character in the lion king movie. This research is included in the literature study. The researcher focuses on dialogue and subtitle in the movie, and after that analyzes the characters and characterizations based on the theory of Paul Costa and Robert McCrae. There are five personality traits, namely extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeableness. In this study, researchers found three of the Big Five Personality traits on the characters, Simba’s personality type are Extraversion And Neuroticism, Mufasa’s personality type are agreeableness and Neuroticism, and Scar’s personality type is Neuroticism .This study used a qualitative description method. The writer employs herself to collect the data by reading the subtitle, watching the film and marking them. From the analysis of the personality of the three main characters’ in the lion king movie, it can be concluded that the personality traits from The Big Five personalities are used in the film. From the theory used, the researcher found that the characteristics of Simba’s Extraversion are positive emotional, active and assertive And Neuroticism of simba are anxiety, self-consciousness, hostility and depression, Mufasas’ agreeableness are trusting, straightforward, altruistic and modest, Neuroticism of mufasa are anxiety and hostility, and Scar Neuroticism are vulnerability, impulsive, self-consciousness, hostility and depression.
