Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze what the feminism varieties and how is the feminism in patriarchal reflected by main character Annisa in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban movie. This study is conducted with the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data of the analysis is Perempuan Berkalung Sorban movie and the data are linguistic feature that are format as sentence by the main character. The data were collected by the documentary technique and the instrument is documentary sheets. The study results that (1) The main character reflected the feminism varieties. Based on the Feminist Thought book there are three varieties of feminism. Liberal feminism, Radical feminism and Socialist Marxists feminism. The main character reflected the three kinds of feminism such as Liberal Feminism, Radical feminism, Socialist Marxist Feminism. The main character Annisa is reflected most dominant appeared Radical feminism. Annisa is powerful and rebellious women. She wants to get the equal with the man without any discrimination gender. (2) The feminism in patriarchal society in reflected is Annisa to represent the women movement to against all of objection toward woman. The each utterances of Annisa represent she is against all forms of women discrimination in private patriarchy and public patriarchy. The research focuses on the analysis of feminism in patriarchal society in the main character can be interpreted through Annisa as a main character and sentences of the movie and it is found of the main character reflected the feminism in a patriarchal society.Keywords:feminism, varieties, patriarchal, main character, movie.

Abstract

The purpose of this study to determine the types of errors found in the narrative text written by students of SMP Negeri 3 Sidikalang. Errors are analyzed to find the dominant type., and the reason they made the mistake This study used descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is the 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Sidikkalang. From the findings in the field, the writer finds that there are types of errors that come from the grammatical aspect. namely: sentence patterns, word order,concord, tenses. then the researcher studied and concluded. that the highest error is in the writing error of tenses. with a yield of 68.13%. and the lowest in the sentence pattern as much as 1%. And the reasons students make error because they do not understand the structure of English writing and some students think that writing in English is the same as writing in Indonesian. Abstract

This study aimed (1) to investigate the types of teacher and student talk in English classroom interaction and (2) to investigate the teacher and students’ reasons to use the types of categories in classroom interaction. This study focuses on analyzing the process of classroom interaction through Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS). This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted in SMA Bina Bersaudara Medan at the X-1 grade class. The instruments of the research were observation, recording and interview. The results of this study were (1) the types of teacher talk that occurred were praise or encourages, asking question, lecturing and giving direction. Furthermore, the types of student talk that occurred were response and silence or confusion. (2) There are four reasons why the teacher used the types of categories in classroom interaction, namely: the teacher used praise and encourage to make students feel appreciated, the teacher used asking question because the teacher want to improve students’ skill and to make students understood about the topic being discussed before getting into the next topic, the teacher used lecturing to make process of teaching and learning in the classroom to be successful, the teacher used giving direction because teacher wanted to know whether the students have understood about the material or not. There are two reasons why students used the types of categories in classroom interaction, namely: students respond to the teacher because they understood about the topic being discussed, the students wanted to try their ability and to know the extent of their knowledge about the topic, the students silence or confusion when the teacher asked question because the students didn’t understand the question given by the teacher, according to them the lesson is very difficult to understood, and they didn’t understand the topic being discussed.Keywords: Teacher Talk, Student Talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS).

Abstract

This study aims to develop media of teaching speaking to 10th Grade at SMA Gajah Mada developed by using Jenga. The research was conducted by using developmental research, the research will be used to develop new products and procedures. This study was conducted through six phases of Research and Development (R&D) design; data collection and data collection, data analysis, material design, expert validation, revision, and final product. The data were gathered by conducting an interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 22 respondents to get the students’ needs. The results of the interview and questionnaire indicate that students need English-speaking media that can inspire and enable students to speak English actively. The board game and other Jenga equipment such as blocks, dice, and cards were the result of the product. Experts have validated the products. It can be inferred that the media was valid with the maximum score was 140 for the excellent result. The results showed 92.1% or 129 from the first validator and 90% or 126 from the second validator, and it was classified as important, appropriate and possible to use as learning media for students.Keywords: Jenga for Teaching Speaking, Speaking Media, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) find out the media used in teaching speaking for the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Medan, (2) determine the media needed by tenth grade students in speaking skills, and (3) to develop the valid media for teaching speaking based on the needs of tenth grade students. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Gall, Gall, and Borg (2003). The research subject was X MIA 7 students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research object is to develop the teaching English media for speaking skill by using ClassDojo Application. The instrument used was student questionnaire. The data was collected using questionnaires validation sheets. The validator consists of the English lecturer and teacher. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the media used by teacher does not support teaching and learning processes, (2) interactive media such as ClassDojo is the media which is needed by students, and (3) the developed media have been valid with a percentage of 90% from lecturer and 86%% from the English teacher and this media is appropriate and applicable to use regarding the students' needs for speaking skills.Keywords: ClassDojo, Speaking, Research and Development (R&D), Teaching Media

Abstract

This study deals with media in learning English especially reading descriptive text for the seventh-grade students. The objective of the study were to develop a Scramble Game using ClassDojo as a media in learning English especially descriptive text for junior high school. This study was conducted by research and development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo as media in descriptive text, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was the seventh-grade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to the seventh-grade students to get the students’ needs. The evaluators of the developed media were two experts namely an English lecturer and English teacher. The findings show that Scramble Game Using ClassDojo was able to be developed into media in learning English using the research method and needs analysis. The result of the research was the Scramble Game media that the teacher can use as the learning media of descriptive text for the seventh-grade students of junior high school. The developed media have been validated by experts. The total of validation score from the Expert I and Expert II are 91.8% so it was categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo are appropriate as media in reading descriptive text and can be used for the seventhgrade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan in learning English especially descriptive text.Key Words: Research and Development (R&D), Reading, Media, Descriptive Text, Scramble Game, ClassDojo.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the student’s perceptions towards the use of Google Classroom. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Aek Natas. The research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was thirty-one students of SMAN 1 Aek Natas grade X have been using Google Classroom for teaching English. The results shows that Google Classroom is being helped for the students for study during this pandemic. Online learning can not completely replace conventional learning in the class but this system needs to be continuously developed for more effective learning.Keywords: Students' perceptions, Google Classroom, English teaching.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of code switching used by English teacher and to investigate the reasons why the English teacher used code switching in Teaching English. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observing, interview, and recording. The analysis of code switching was based on Poplack’s theory to know the types of code switching and Hoffman’s theory to ivestigate the reasons why the teacher used code switching. Based on the analysis, it was found that there were 106 utterances that has been categorized as code swutching consisting of 46 intra-sentential, 28 inter-sentential, and 32 tag switching. The reasons why teacher used code switching in teaching English process were Quoting somebody else, Interjection and Repetition used for clarification, there were two reasons set by the teacher, there were to make the students understand about the explanation given by the teacher and to develop student’s English skill.Keywords: Code Switching, English Teacher, Teaching English

Abstract

The aim of this study was to (1) find out the learning needs of X grade of Beauty Program students at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan in improving their reading skills, (2) develop relevant reading materials by using Genre Based Approach for X grade students of Beauty Program at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development which is adapted from Borg, Gall and Gall (2003). The data was taken from the observation, questionnaires, and interview. The materials were validated by an English lecture and an English teacher by using validation sheets which is adapted from BSNP. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis. The result of this study shows that: (1) the existing materials do not support the students major because the topics of the materials are still general, (2) relevant reading materials are needed by students in vocational school especially in Beauty Program. These materials were developed by using Genre Based Approach, (3) the developed reading materials by using Genre Based had been validated with the score 3.69 from expert 1 and 3.83 from expert 2 which is in the range of 3.25 < ≤ 4.00. These materials have been developed in accordance to the students’ need by using Genre Based Approach.Keywords: English reading materials, Genre Based Approach, Vocational High School

Abstract

This study was descriptive-qualitative approach using content analysis. The data used in this study were in the forms of texts in the textbook. Some steps were undertaken during the data collection: reading the texts carefully, understanding specific parts related to the research focus intensively, marking certain parts related to the research focus, making a description of the data and inserting the data into the table. The subjects were 10 texts in English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X. The objects were the 18 characters described by Kemendiknas. The results showed that there were two points of findings discussed in this research. First, related to the occurrence of characters, Hard work character was the most dominant character found in the texts with 8 data or 19.04%. It implied that the author wanted wants to raise the students’ effort of students to other human..Second, related to the techniques of integrating characters, there were two techniques found in the texts, namely explicit and implicit technique. The implicit technique was more dominant in the texts with 24 data or 57.15%. This result showed that the author seemed to pay attention to the cognitive and affective aspects of the students in which at their age, they have been able to think critically and to understand the implied meaning.Keywords: characters, techniques of integrating characters, texts
