Abstract

The study scientifically, empirically, and objectively conducted aims at knowing the ESL learners’ perceptions towards the practices of graphic organizers conveniently used as presentation media or strategies in high class activities (a class-presentation task). In order to achieve the aim of the study, the researcher used a quantitative research technique along with its instrument, a questionnaire. The data was collected through applying a questionnaire, and then analyzed in a descriptive statistic method. The results suggest that the perceptions of low English speakers in using graphic organizers as presentation strategies was moderate (M=3.7). Meanwhile, ESL learners owning a good English proficiency perceived the use of graphic organizers as presentation strategies positively (M=4.5). All in all, the use of Graphic Organizers (GOs) as ESL learners’ presentation media or strategies was perceived favorably.

Abstract

This service activity aims at training the English ability of the third grade students of SMA Islam Terpadu Al-Kamal NW in Narmada. This service is to solve the lack of human sources in English teachers in this school in which the headmaster plans to encourage students’ ability in English speaking. It is conducted for three months started from March to May in 2021. To implement the service, the team makes some stages consisting of planning, coordination, preparation, training, and evaluation. In training, the audio-visual method is used to increase the students’ ability in mastering English. The results shows that the average score of all students are 74 for pronunciation, 73 for fluency and 72.94 for grammar. The average score indicate that their ability in English mastery is quite good and need to be developed for further. Thus, team expects that this service run continuously and get supports from related stakeholders.

Abstract

This public service is aim to give knowledge and understanding to students in Universitas Bumigora. This service activity is a student’s management leadership training for basic level. Students’ needs to understand that they have important role and responsibilities in societies and in the college; students are also needs to learn how to manage their selves; to identify leadership identities and to handle conflict. The method used in this public service is there stages; pre-test, workshop and post-test. The participants are students in Universitas Bumigora especially the freshman year. The result obtained is to open horizons of thought that students’ part in the future is important not only to themselves but also to the region, further to our country. Therefore, given knowledge in this student’s management leadership training for basic level expand students understanding in the college and in the community.

Abstract

Language has many important roles in our life especially for communication. We can imagine how our life will be without language. Every nation has its own language such as Indonesia with its own language and spoken by their native speaker for example Japanese spoken by Japanese society, Balinese by Balinese society and Sasak by Sasak society in Lombok West of Nusa Tenggara. Although Indonesia consist of thousand tribes and many different local languages, Indonesia has Indonesia language as its national language and spoken by all Indonesians. Actually this study gives some descriptions about affixation in Sasak especially in selaparang dialect which has a specific purpose to find out the form of affixation in Sasak in selaparang dialect. Furthermore, the method that is used in this study is descriptive qualitative method by giving arguments about the aspect of affixation in Sasak. Finally, the result of this study is found 18 (eighteen) affixes in Selaparang dialect which is divided into 4 (four) kinds of affixation namely 7 (seven) prefixes (be-, peN-, per-,pe-, nge-, te-,and me-); 2 (two) infixes (-em-, and –eg-); 1 (one) suffix (-an/ -ang); 8 (eight) simulfixes (be-an/-ang, peN- an/-ang, per- an/-ang,pe- an/-ang, nge- an/-ang, te- an/-ang, ke- an/-ang, and me- an/-ang).

Abstract

The purposes of this research are: (1) to identify the types of figurative language found in Harmony’s song lyrics. And (2) what are the function of figurative language used in Harmony’s song lyrics? This research applied descriptive qualitative approach. In collecting the data, the researcher searched the songs and noting technique to the scripts. Read and understood the song lyrics in Harmony’s song lyrics. While in analyzing the data, the researcher translate the data into English, identified the data based on the types of figurative languages, classified the data based on the types of figurative languages, analyzed the selected data based on the figurative languages. The results of data analysis, there are seven data found in Harmony’s song lyrics, namely: simile, symbol, irony, personification, paradox, hyperbole, and metaphor. The function of figurative language simile and symbol in Thun Nathe’s song lyrics is to afford imagination pleasure, while in irony is to add emotional intensity. In Sauadagar Percek’s song lyrics simile is used to afford imaginative pleasure, personification and paradox is used to say much in a brief compas, while in hyperbole is to add emotional intensity. In Selaq Bonga’s song lyrics, metaphor is used to add emotional intensity.

Abstract

The GOs (Graphic Organizers) strategy, which was used in reading comprehension and writing skills research, was then developed into a strategy that could be used as a medium for developing ppt materials. and as an effective and efficient presentation strategy to be used in scientific presentations. This GOs strategy is applied in guiding students in the computer science undergraduate study program in the form of community service (PkM) aimed at increasing student creativity as participants in developing GOs-based creative materials and developing communication skills in delivering scientific presentation materials in class. . This activity was carried out for level I students at Bumigora University with a total of 30 participants. The following are the solutions and steps involved in this PkM activity, namely the use of Graphic Organizers as an effective solution in providing guidance and improvement in conducting scientific presentations carried out by PkM partners. . There are two methods used in providing guidance on the use of the GOs strategy, namely the lecture method where they are given an understanding of the basic concepts of GOs and the simulation method or practice of implementing the Graphic Organizers strategy directly which is carried out by the facilitator/PKM implementation team and followed by the participants. in a participatory manner. The results of this activity show good results and the level of achievement of its use is high. Based on structured observations, it reached a score of 3.7 with a percentage of 73%. The second evaluation was carried out by measuring the perceptions of GOs users, which was a score of 3.8 with a percentage of 77%. Evaluation based on this perception value is high (3.01-4.0).

Abstract

The efforts of curriculum development led by the learners’ needs and necessities. English curriculum design in the tertiary education must be dynamic by following the learning patterns and learning styles of students as active participants in ELT. Another perspective in improving English Language Learning through an English textbook design by developing simple-interactive contents in purpose of better English learning outcomes. This study aims at developing a model of English textbook based on the interactive-simple and meaningful contents and investigating whether the use of such English textbook can increase ELT effectiveness. It was conducted under the perspective and methods of Research and Development (R&D) through; explorative study, curriculum model development study and evaluative study. The data was collected through observation, questionnaires, and test. Eventually the data was statistically analyzed through t-test. This study revealed that the needs-analysis’ findings on necessity, wants; the four language skills and components such as interactive Grammar contents, Writing skills; The Organizations of the Paragraph, Reading Skills, Pronunciation (Sound-Structures, and related English. Simple-interactive contents-based English textbook was appropriately-enough used. Moreover the finding was supported by test through T-test showing that the effect is not too significant between the participants using the developed textbook (81.10) with those are not using one (77.26). This developed textbook is rather appropriate to use in the non-English departments in tertiary education. It can further be developed by designing the appropriate contents and assessment models. One significant fact found in this study is that the designed materials would have made non-English students engage in positive classroom activities; English exposure and active participation.
