Abstract

The Five Super-priority Tourist Destinations have been set by the Government of Indonesia in 2019. One of the selected tourist destinations is Komodo-Labuan Bajo. This determination of course affects many sectors and dimensions of people's lives; one of which is the readiness of tourist villages in the super destination area. The target of community service activities is the local population by involving their participation in the field of community improvement and empowerment. This participation is the first step for them to make changes in the tourism sector. Activities that have been carried out in this community service program include assistance in homestay business management, simple English language training, and ordering local tourism guides as an effort to sustain self-management participation based on existing local wisdom. As a first step, of course the sustainability of institutional networking activities is highly expected.

Abstract

There is no greater power to encourage teachers to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the learning process until the Covid-19 pandemic occurs. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the learning process in schools in the outermost, remote, and disadvantaged (3T) areas such as East Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The implementation of Distance Learning (PJJ) has just begun to be introduced to teachers to ensure that students receive appropriate educational services. Unfortunately, this PJJ did not run well or optimally. This is because the teachers do not have the experience and knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) available for free such as Canvas. Therefore, the Community Service (PkM) team conducted strengthening training to increase knowledge and use of ICT for teachers at the State Junior High School (SMPN) 5 Borong, East Manggarai Regency. This activity uses presentation, demonstration (practice), and evaluation methods. This PkM activity shows that all of the participating teachers think that Canvas-based LMS training activities are beneficial and are committed to using Canvas LMS in their learning activities at school with students.

This qualitative study aims to describe the jargons found in the National University Debating Championship (NUDC) student online debate tournament in the LLDikti XV region which involved five universities at the national level. After analyzing the findings and presenting a discussion on jargon at the 2020-2021 National University Debating Championship (NUDC) online debate tournament, it can be concluded that the jargon used is (1) words, (2) phrases, and (3) abbreviations. The total data for the forms of inner jargon is 44 (100%). The first order is word form jargon with 18 jargon items (41%), followed by abbreviations with 15 jargon items (34%), then phrase form with 11 jargon items (25%). In addition, to the need for further research on the impact of these jargons in the field of linguistics, then any future researches that involve more participants are also highly expected in order to obtain more comprehensive and deeper research results

Abstract

All teachers, including speaking instructors, should be able to select the proper interactive media for students' speaking practice. Video-assisted learning tasks in the speaking class have not been explored extensively, despite the reality that video-based tasks are an appropriate choice for students to enhance their speaking ability. This study sought to examine the Effect of video-based tasks on students' speaking skills. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was employed, and the speaking scoring rubric served as the research instrument. Both the experimental group and the control group were comprised of participants. Researchers gave pre-and post-tests to identify the impact of the video-based tasks technique on students' speaking skills. Using a simple random sampling technique, 56 students from the English study program in the first grade at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng comprised the research sample; then, the data were analyzed by using a t-test with the assistance of the SPSS 24.0 program. The data analysis of the average student score in the experimental and control groups revealed that the experimental group's average score (80,29) was higher than the control group's average score (67,57). This result demonstrates the significant effects of video-based tasks in teaching speaking. The researchers concluded that video-based tasks were helpful for teaching speaking skills. Moreover, video-based tasks significantly impact students' ICT skills, learning independence, and self-evaluation development. The logical implication of this study's findings is that EFL teachers should use videos to teach English, particularly speaking skills, because it has been demonstrated to have a favorable effect on the respondents' speaking ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the significant effect of the Duolingo application in teaching English vocabulary, i.e., to find out whether students who are taught using the Duolingo application have better achievement compared to students who are not taught using the Duolingo application. This research used a quasi-experimental design and the test as the research instrument. This research was conducted on the second-year students of SMPN Langke Rembong in the 2022-2023 school year, with a total sample of 58 students and using purposive sampling to determine the sample. Based on the data analysis results, the experimental and control groups had different mean scores. While the experimental group obtained a mean score of 85.67, the control group had a mean score of 71.14. The mean score results concluded that the experimental group had a higher mean score than the mean score obtained by the control group. Furthermore, the hypothesis test results demonstrated that the null hypothesis (Ho), stating no significant difference in vocabulary scores or achievement between students who were taught by Duolingo applications and those who were not taught by Duolingo applications, was rejected. Meanwhile, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there is a significant difference in vocabulary scores or achievement between students who were taught by the Duolingo application and those who were not taught by the Duolingo application
