Abstract

Pondok studies are the legacy of the education system in the archipelago which is centered on customary, cultural and religious molds in the Malay-Islamic context. The influx of modern education into Malaya as a result of Western colonialism has not only marginalized the role of pondok studies, but also provoked negative criticism of the pattern of education practiced by pondok studies which is said to be outdated and irrelevant to meet market demands. Motivated by this statement, this study seeks to trace the education system practiced in cottage studies, which has been instrumental in producing many scholarly figures both locally and internationally. To carry out the study, qualitative methods were used, and a document analysis approach was chosen to examine books, journals and periodical articles related to the study subject. The results of the study found that the education system in the pondok studies, has its own uniqueness and privilege in developing human potential through the idea of thinking. In the pondok curriculum, the appreciation of thinking must be directed to true knowledge rather than based on conjecture. In conclusion, the pondok education system is still relevant to these cutting -edge educational needs. In fact, on the one hand, the pondok education system is seen as more effective and more honest in developing human potential in terms of thought and behavior at a time when the current education system is too inclined to produce factory-based human products, to meet capitalist wants.

Humanism became a central or important point in civilization because it was often associated with the intellectual movement. This study sought to look at the idea of a Malay literary figures of the 19th and early 20th century, a native of Perak, Raja Haji Yahya about aspects of humanism in his literary work. Qualitative methods with a literature approach were used to achieve the objectives of the study. The results of the study found that Raja Haji Yahya has used poetry as a medium to pour out the essence of humanity in the form of cynical metaphors. This is because at that time, the ruling power of the original inhabitants was taken over by the British colonialists. Following the British entry into the state of Perak, the landscape of governance and community life gradually underwent changes. According to Raja Haji Yahya, the society was divided, with one side being a supporter of the colonialists and the other being an opponent.

Abstract

The 16th century had shown that Western powers so vigorously expanded their influence in the East. Their main goal is to spread the mission of Christianization and reap wealth within the Malay world. Aceh is considered the main rival in the East because of its power as the strongest country in the Malay world and its position as a major center of trade routes. The reign of the 8th Sultan of Aceh, Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah is regarded as a critical period for the Muslims in the East because at that time the Portuguese and the Spanish conspired to conquer the Muslim countries. The situation is causing Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah to take steps to defend Islam and the sovereignty of the states in the Malay world. This study uses the qualitative method. The archival approach was chosen to examine the documents relevant to the scope discussed. In order for the study to be more structured, the aspect of historiography based on the sequence of events becomes a consideration. To ensure the accuracy of events within the reign of Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah, the cross-reference technique of information is done. This technique is very important and relevant given that no thorough research has ever been conducted for the reign of Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah with respect to the scope of the study. The result of the study indicates that Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah emphasized the understanding of monotheism-Sufism among the community to develop the spirit of jihad against Western colonialists. Apart from that, he also implemented the constitution based on Islamic law. In order for the sovereignty of states in the Malay reserved, he has built good relations with other states of Pahang and Brunei in particular that each has a great influence within Malaya and Borneo.
