Abstract

Nettle caterpillar Setora nitens Walker. is one of the major pests of oil palm plant. The use of synthetic chemical pesticides to control pest has many negative impacts such a pest resistance, pest resurgence and environmental pollution. To reduce the negative impacts cause by synthetic chemical pesticides, then application of the alternative pest control using botanical insecticides such as Derris eliptica Benth. Which is environmentally friendly is needed. This research is aims to test the effectiveness of some concentration of Derris eliptica Benth. root powder and to obtain the proper concentration to control Setora nitens Wlk. on oil palm plant (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Pest and in the Technical Unit (UPT), Experimental Field Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau. Using completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments one 30 g Derris eliptica root powder/litre of water (30 g/l water) , namely AT 2, (40 g/l of water) , AT 3 (50 g/l of water) , AT 4 (60 g/l of water) and AT 5 (70 g/l of water). Data has been analyzed using analysis of variance and furthen testing using Duncan’s New Mulitiple Range Test at the 5% level. The result of the result research indicate that concentration of 50 g/l of water is an effective concentration to kill S. nitens because cause total mortality 84.37% , early death of S. nitens achieved in 2,5 hours. Lethal concentration of Derris root powder kill 95% of test insects S. nitens larvae was 5.5% , equivalent to 55 g/l of water, within the range of approaches to 50 and 60 g/l of water of treatments .  Keywords: Oil palm plant(Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), Nettle caterpillar Setora nitens Walker, Derris eliptica Benth.

Abstract

Nettle Caterpillar Setora nitens is a major pest on oil palm. Chemical control to nettle caterpillar Setora nitens has some negative impacts, such as pest resistance, pest resurgence, and environmental pollution. The use of botanical insecticides, such as Piper aduncum L. is one of solutions to decrease the use of synthetic chemical insecticides. The purpose of this research is to obtain the concentration of Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract which is able and exact to control nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest at the oil palm plant. This research was conducted in field using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 repetitions. The treatment concentrations of Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract are 0 g/l of water, 25 g/l of water, 50 g/l of water, 75 g/l of water, and 100 g/l of water. The Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract concentration 100 g/l of water is able to control nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest with total mortality of 85%. The exact concentration needed to kill 95% nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest is 32,1% or equivalent to 321 g/l of water. However, it is not yet effective because the effective and exact concentration to kill 95% of insect test more than 10% or equivalent to 100 g/l of water. Abstract

Leptocorisa oratorius F. is a major pest of  rice plant, that can damage the rice plant by sucking the liquid from the cells of the rice plant. For controlling this pest usually used synthetic chemical insecticide but this can cause negative impacts such pest resistance and pest resurgence. The use of leaf extract of Piper aduncum L. as a botanical insecticide is suittable to control Leptocorisa oratorius. The experiment was conducted at Laboratory of Plant Pest and Agribusiness Incubator University  of Riau Pekanbaru, from February to April 2013. The experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatmens are (Piper aduncum leaf extract are: 0 g/l water,  25 g/l water, 50 g/l water, 75 g/l water, and 100 g/l of water. Aplication of Piper aduncum leaf extract at treatment 75 g/l water was able to kill Leptocorisa oratorius up to 90%. Number concentration is still in the range of LC 95 values  from 7,2 to 21,9%. The exact concentration to kill 95% of the Leptocorisa oratorius is 10,1% or equitvalent to 101 g/l of water.   Keyword: Rice, Leptocorisa oratorius, Peper aduncum L.
