Abstract

Any interesting to compare the phenomenon of European folklore and Indonesian folklore. This study uses narrative analysis techniques. For research purposes, such as: the gender bias describes the structure presented in the story of Indonesian folklore (Bawang Merah Bawang Putih) and European folklore (Cinderella). Then, to describe the gender bias presented in the discourse structure from the story of Indonesian folklore and European folklore. Meanwhile, the results of this study can be drawn some important points encountered in both the folklore. First, the women’s attitudes are passive, forgiving, not aggressive, and accept whatever (‘nrimo’) is a good female figures. Second, the women’s attitudes are active, ambitious, and aggressive is a bad woman figures. Third, the good woman attitudes can not changes the fate of their own, without the help of a miracle or the help of a man.

Abstract

Central Java BKKBN (Badan Koordinasi Keluarga Berencana Nasional) main objectives is to facilitate government policy in population control. To achieve this objective, BKKBN should treat man and woman in a same respectful way because both have the same contribution to population control. Unfortunately some of their Public Service Announcement (PSA) did not show this emancipation. One of their PSA show only a young woman with her baby, delivering a subtle message that young woman is responsible for early marriage. By using Fairclough’s Discourse Analysis, we found that BKKBN Central Java unconsciously construct a discourse through their PSA that young woman not only become the most unbenefited side in the early marriage, but also the most responsible for the marriage.

Abstract

High definition technology development in the entertainment industry, especially film industry, has produce classic problem about format consensus in the media industry. This situation eventually creates the so called “war of format” between the two most popular high definition formats, the Blu-ray from Sony/Hitachi and the HD DVD from Toshiba. Unlike the war of format before, for example is VHS versus Betamax war, that determinated mostly by the consumer, the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD is strongly affect by the abilities of the companies behind the two format to consentrate and integrate their business moghul and also to make alliance between competitiors. Concentration of ownership is appears in the trend of holywood studios to merge with the bigger studios, which is creates a few conglomeration in the movie business. Integrations of business could be seen from the owners of the big studios that not only have the studios, but also many other business that relate or not with the entertainment business. And least, the alliance could be seen from this big studios alliance to support one of the format.Initially the HD DVD was on the fruitfull position because has been back up by the studios like Warner Bros, Paramount, and Universal that have more market share in US that the studios that support Blu-ray format, which is Sony, Walt Disneym and 20th Century Fox. Fortunately for Blu-ray, Sony already sells millions of PS 3 console that ingeniously could read Blu-ray disk; this means there’s already millions of Blu-ray reader device in the hand of consument, something that Toshiba could not generate. In the end, the victory of Blu-ray format is accelerate by the switching side of Warner Brothers studio to the Blu-ray follow by the others big studios.Conclusively, the success of a new technology, especially the media industry, is sometimes not depends on the quality of the technology itself. Often, the success is determined by the availability of the industries that support the technology. The war of format between HD DVD and Blu-ray definitely show the determination of media industry in the development of new technology.

Abstract

This study aims to know how symbolic interaction process happens to the deaf students who study in SD Maranatha 01 public school. Communication built by the deaf students to the teachers and other students who have good hearing will influence the changing of meaning and behavior. That's why the author is interested to analyze the symbolic interaction of the deaf students in public school, how the role of the teachers and other students in dealing with the deaf students to take their action and to adapt themselves in public school. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative conducted using observation, and interview techniques. The foundation used in this study is the theory of Symbolic Interactionism of George Herbert Mead. The conclusion of this research is; the behavior and symbolic formation happening to the deaf students of SD Maranatha 01 are influenced by the social process.

Abstract

Presidential Election in 2009 has gives us some negative phenomenon. The Hijab Campaign, Boediono Wife’s Religion, and other religio-politics issues were annoyingly interpolating the better campaigns. In one hand this is a bad phenomenon, but on the other hand this phenomenon also gives us some interesting questions about political tolerance in Indonesia. Mass media as the fourth estate surely can’t get away from their responsibility. Uniquely many of big mass media in Indonesia have affiliations with certain religions. The example is Republika with their Muslim affiliations. This phenomenon become interesting to study, moreover Indonesia is one of the biggest democratic countries in the world that surely need political tolerance to strengthen their democratic system. It’s become interesting to inquire the editorial policy in Republika in their news on religio-politic in presidential campaign. It’s also become interesting to understand the Islamic model that Republika adopted that maybe affected their editorial policy. Last, it’s become interesting to find out Republika’s political tolerance, especially in the presidential campaign. All of this inquiry could be found using the gatekeeping analysis from Pamela Shoemaker that map out factors that could affect media content from five levels. Those levels are individual, organizational, communication routine, extra-media, and social system.This research is use post-positivistic paradigm. The theories used here is gatekeeping from Pamela Shoemaker, political tolerance, and moderate Islamic concepts. After analyze using the gatekeeping Analysis, this research found that Republika’s policy for the religio-politics issues have vision of moderat Islamic model that generally careful but will be serious and sensasional if when dealing with syariah policy issues. Last, Republika have a limited political tolerance policy that have tendency to be exclusive and difficult to accommodate the aspiration of non-Muslim peoples.  The final conclusion for this research is that Republika have an editorial policy that creates public space for Indonesian Muslim that has vision of Islamic moderate and limited political tolerance.

Abstract

Early childhood education starts to growth in Indonesia since the beginning of year 2000. This system growth and change is not only due to the change of parents lifestyle in the contemporary age that asks both husband and wife to works, it’s also develop because of the change in values that people have to educate their children. Indonesian people in the contemporary age eventually view the new system permissively and rationalize it as inevitable consequences of modern world. The system is also growth so rational that finally all traditional system in the formal, theoretical, practical, and substantial aspect was left to be change by the new system. This article is trying to comprehend how this hyperrationalization in early childhood education develop in Indonesia.

Abstract

Video Game, especially in Indonesia, has been long seeing as kid toy with minimum or no psychological impact to the player. This view is a serious mistake since video game able to transmit violence message to political message into their audience or player. Political message especially is very omnipresent in such game as Red Alert, Generals and others FPS or RTS games. The message on these games is higly political and contains political views the developer has. This writing tries to read the political messages on games like Red Alert and Counter Strike to find myth the developer create or believe and search out why these myths is present. Barthes analysis on semiotics were used to read not only the denotative meaning of the message, but also find the connotative message and finaly find the myths wrapped around the games.

Abstract

Yellow press or yellow journalism is types of journalism that have little concern to accuracy and impartiality. This kind of journalism usually used in many metropolitan newspaper that heavily sensationalized crime, sex, and metaphysical news. This kind of newspaper allegedly also found in some Islamic magazine with its own characteristic, in this case Sabili Magazine. These magazines have some unique journalism characteristic that could be compared to yellow journalism. This is including sensationalist, bombastic, and partisan. This writing tries to show how Sabili magazine used types of journalism that have similarities with yellow journalism.

Abstract

Dunia kepenyiaran telah berkembang pesat seiring dengan tingkat peradaban manusia dan kemajuan teknologi komunikasi. Radio sebagai salah satu media penyalur informasi dan pembentuk pendapat umum memiliki peran yang sangat strategis. Di era global, terlebih sejak Indonesia memasuki era reformasi dengan kebebasan mengakses dan memperoleh informasi yang semakin terbuka, dunia penyiaran mempunyai potensi besar untuk mempengaruhi masyarakat luas dan menjadi medium informasi tercepat, interaktif dan relatif murah. Dalam perkembangannya, radio menjadi sangat akrab dengan masyarakat karena media radio dapat menjadi media yang komunikatif, edukatif dan menghibur, yang hanya membutuhkan indera pendengaran sehingga dapat didengarkan dimana saja. Perkembangan radio tidak lepas dari kompetensi penyiaran yang salah satunya dilakukan Siswa SMK N 1 Semarang (Jurusan Produksi dan Siaran Program Radio). Tujuan dilakukannya pengabdian yakni untuk meningkatkan kompetensi kepenyiaran bagi siswa SMK N 1 Semarang. diawali dengan penyampaian materi pelatihan kepenyiaran yang diikuti dengan diskusi selanjutnya diikuti dengan praktik langsung di SMK N 1 Semarang. Untuk mengukur tingkat pemahaman peserta, pengelola melakukan post-test dan pre-test di awal dan akhir kegiatan ceramah, yang diikuti pengamatan pada saat praktik siaran radio. Setelah kegiatan pengabdian ini, peserta pelatihan, dalam hal ini siswa siswi SMK Negeri 1 Semarang, memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang kompetitif dalam dunia kepenyiaran.
