Abstract

Abstract: English as a kind of language is a tool for people to communicate. At the same time, language is an important and prominent part of culture. This paper emphasizes the importance cultural awareness in preserving the local culture for English Language Teaching (English Language Teaching). By using 4F approach (Folk Dance, Festival, Fair and Food), the students can get cultural understanding in promoting the local culture itself. Through this approach, it also shapes the students’ character that involves internal changes in terms of attitudes and values. Increasing cultural awareness means to see aspects of cultural differences. Through this approach also develops the students’ motivation to promote their local culture. Keywords: local culture,4F approach, cultural awareness

Abstract

The aimed of this research was to find out whether the use of Annotating Text Strategy could help teacher or not in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching report text. There were 58 students of eleventh grade SMA Nurul Iman Palembang in academic year 2016/2017. They were divided to be two groups, experimental (29 students) and control group (29 students). In this study, the writers used Non-equivalent group design. We taught the experimental group students to read a report text by using Annotating Text Strategy. Meanwhile, we taught the control group students to read a report text by using lecturing method. The data from two groups were collected from the results of pre-test and post-test scores which were analyzed to get mean score differences. The writers find out that mean score of the experimental group improved significantly from 54,48 pre-test to be 74,14 in post-test. Based on the independent sample t-test analysis, it was found that the significant level was 0,04 < 0,05. It meant that there was any significant difference in reading comprehension between students who were taught by using Annotating Text Strategy and those who were not.Keywords: reading comprehension, report text and annotating text strategy.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the fundamental components learned in language learning. The teachers should prepare good English materials to support the students’ learning activities during vocabulary instruction. Kahoot Online application and Google Form can be used as learning alternative to facilite the process of vocabulary instruction. This study was intended to find out (1) the students’ vocabulary achievement after being treated with Kahoot Online and Google and (2) the significant difference in implementing Kahoot Online Application and Google Form toward students’ vocabulary comprehension enhancement. The researcher used quasi-experimental method to conduct the research. The population of this study were all elementary students of SD Manggala in academic year 2020/2021. All fourth grade students had been involved in this study as the sample. The sample of this study used purposive sampling. The independent sample t-test results showed that the value significance (2-tailed) 0.096 was higher than the value significance 0.05. While, the value of t-obtained (1.319) was lower than t-table (1.6909) with degree of freedom was 34. In other words, there was no any significant difference on vocabulary comprehension between the third grade students of SD Manggala who were taught by using Kahoot Online Application strategy and Google Form (Vocabulary Quiz). Keywords: Kahoot Online Application, Google Form, Vocabulary Comprehension

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability. This study was conducted using correlation research design. The population of this study investigated the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang with the total number were 482 students. In selecting the sample of this study, cluster random sampling technique was implemented. There were 147 students participated as the sample. The writer collected data by using two instruments from reading and writing test. The result of this study showed that the level of students’ comprehension reading was in the average category. The analysis result showed the mean score of reading comprehension was 61.80. The level of students’ writing ability was in the average category. The analysis result showed the mean score of students’ writing ability was 6.2713. In analyzing the data of the correlation analysis it was found that there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability. The results of this study showed that the correlation coefficient level between reading comprehension and writing ability was 0.323 with the significance value 0.000 that lower alpha value 0.05. Thus, reading comprehension gave positive contribution to students’ ability in writing.Keywords: reading comprehension, writing ability, and correlation

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant difference on reading comprehension of analytical exposition between the eleventh grade students’ of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang who were taught by using Peer Assisted Learning strategy (PALS) and those who were not and to find out whether or not it was effective to use Peer Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) to improve reading comprehension of analytical exposition to the eleventh grade students’ at SMA Negeri 11 Palembang. This study used quasi experimental method to conduct the research. There were 78 students was taken as sample. Each class consisted 39 students from both XI IPS 3 as experimental group and XI IPS 4 as a control group. In collecting the data, the test was used in reading comprehension as a pretest and posttest. To verify the hypothesis, the result of independent sample t-test found that t-obtained (11.077) was higher than t-table (1.9917) with degree of freedom (df=76), and the significance 2-tailed was 0.000. The result of the data showed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was any significant difference on reading comprehension between the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang who were taught by using Peer Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) and those who were not and also it was effective to use Peer Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) to improve reading comprehension of analytical exposition to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang.Keywords: Reading comprehension, Analytical exposition, Peer Assisted Learning Strategy.

Abstract

Fix-Up strategy is an effective strategy to develop the students’ creativity in thinking and expand their knowledge because they are connecting what is stated in the text and what have been ever experienced that could help increasing their reading comprehension. The aimsof this study were to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement through fix-up strategy and to find out whether or not there was a significant difference instudents’ reading comprehension achievement between students who were taught by using Fix-Upstrategy and those who were not. The population was the eighth-graders of SMP Binatama with total number 127.Toselectthe sample of this study, purposive sampling technique was implemented.There were 64 students as sample. The data were obtained from students’reading comprehension test in recount text. In analyzing the data,paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used. The result of paired sample t-test showed that t-obtained(16.435)was higher than t-table (0.296) and the results of independent sample-test showed that t-obtained (6.697) was higher than t-table (0.296). It can be concluded that there was a significant improvement of reading comprehension through Fix-Upstrategy and there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using Fix-Upstrategy and those who were not.Keywords:promoting, fix-up strategy, reading comprehension
