Abstract

Abstract

This paper examines religious practices of Ammatoans professed to be “Islamic” by practitioners, but ethnocentrically understood as “animistic” in Tylorian sense by scholars. Scholars have argued that Ammatoans’ practices are incompatible with Islam. Islam and animism are mutually exclusive. This paper, in contrast, argues that Islam and animism are all encompassing. To build the argument, this paper firstly elaborates scholars’ revisited theory of animism that argues for the (indigenous) notion of personhood as not limited only to human beings, but extended to non-human beings: land, forest, trees, animals and so forth. Secondly, this paper reviews the Quranic verses that explicate the personhood of non-human beings, and finally Ammatoans’ practices –visits to forest, refusal of electricity installation and others– as ethically responsible and mutually beneficial acts that ensure the well-beings of both human and non-human beings (interpersonal relations). These presentations show how Ammatoans exemplify being Muslim in animistic ways.[Artikel ini membahas praktik keagamaan masyarakat Ammatoa, yang menurut pelakunya disebut “Islamic”, tetapi menurut ahli etnografi sering disebut animistik, karena tidak sesuai dengan ajaran Islam.

Abstract

This study tries to describe responses of the pesantren community on the deradicalization program carried out by the Indonesian government in the Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java along with various factors that influence to those responses. Through the qualitative approach, the results of studies show that pesantren have a strategic role in supporting the success of deradicalization program. Pesantren, which have been united with the community, are trusted and believed by the community as an institution capable of making changes to the outlook as well as the religious model of the community. However, the involvement of pesantren needs to pay attention based on the cultural factors that exist in the pesantren environment. This cultural frame will then be able to support the appropriate deradicalization communication patterns, and the right acceptance of the government in running the deradicalization program.

Abstract

Proof is a key indicator for a student in developing mathematical maturity. However, in the process of learning proof, students have the difficulty of being able to explain the proof that has been compiled using good arguments. So we need a strategy that can put students in the process of clarifying proof better. One strategy that can explore student thought processes in explaining geometric proof is self-explanation strategy. This research aimed to analyze the ability to understand the geometric proof of prospective teacher students by implementing a self-explanation strategy in basic geometry classes. This study used a quasi-experimental research type of nonequivalent control group design. The participants of this research were 75 students of mathematics education study programs at one private university in Semarang. This research used four instrument tests of geometric proof. Before being used for research, the instruments were tested for validity and reliability using product-moment and Cronbach's alpha. Data analysis in this study used a two-way ANOVA test. The results showed that: the increased ability to understand the geometric proof of students who used self-explanation strategy was better than those who obtained direct learning; there was a significant difference between the increase of students’ mathematical proof ability in a group of students with a high and moderate level of initial mathematical ability; the initial ability (high, medium, low) of mathematics did not directly influence the learning process to improve the ability to understand the geometric proof. Hence, it can be concluded that the self-explanation strategy is effective to be used to improve the understanding of the geometric proof.

Abstract

Research on semantic extension is concerned with words that develop a new, separate, but related meaning from their core sense. By using corpus data, this paper seeks to identify the extended meaning of Japanese color words on a phrasal level and reveal the cognitive processes behind their extended meaning. The corpus data show that metonymy is one of the most common routes for conveying the extended meaning of Japanese color words. This paper, therefore, proposes a model of semantic extension of such color words based on metonymy.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper carries out an in-depth review of the implementation of state defense policies in Situbondo so far which is still not optimal. To conduct in-depth research in this paper the researcher uses qualitative research with a porposive approach in order to obtain valid, in-depth and proportional information. The results of the study concluded that: First, the implementation of state defense policy in Situbondo Regency is still not optimal in achieving its stated goals, because there is a paradox in its implementation. This paradox arises because in the implementation of state defense policies top down and ignores local potential, such as the role of charismatic kiai - social capital - which has a strong influence in the Situbondo community so far, so that it has a direct impact on the creation of regional stability, as one of the objectives of national defense. Secondly, because there is a paradox in the implementation of the country's defense policy, it eventually gave birth to an anomaly in the National Defense Program because the Ministry of Defense on one hand wanted the birth of as many national defense cadres, in order to maintain the country's existence from various threats. But on the other hand, in its implementation the Ministry of Defense is exclusive by ignoring the role of the kiai as a very important social capital in the area in encouraging the optimization of the State Defender Program in Situbondo.

Abstract

The theoretical research of Japanese linguistics is diverse. However, applying such research theory to Japanese language education does not necessarily help learners’ understanding. The purpose of this research is to concretely present the problems that arise from the gap between theory and practice in Japanese language research and Japanese language education. In this study, we examine the effect of the theoretical explanation of the Japanese adnominal clause on the learners’ understanding. We selected 10 second-year university Japanese learners as research subjects. They were selected because second-year learners already learn the adnominal clause. The adnominal clause was chosen because it has a considerably simple construction to check whether the learners can comprehend the meaning from those simple constructions. Since the theoretical explanation of linguistics is difficult for learners to understand, we gave a lesson using the learners’ awareness of language called “metalanguage awareness.” By using metalanguage awareness, learners are guided to understand the meaning through the comprehension of its grammatical construction using linguistic terms both in Japanese and their native language, which is Indonesian. As a result, it was found that even though adnominal clause construction is simple, the understanding of the meaning is not that simple. The understanding of adnominal clauses depends on the understanding of more basic learning items of “particles” and “clauses”, which learners still can’t grasp. We conclude that introducing such dependency in focus on form teaching method has the advantage for the teacher to check the degree of learners’ understanding. In this study, the adnominal clause can be used to check whether learners have fully understood the concept and usage of “particles” and “clauses” in Japanese. Since both concepts are very basic, it is important to take a step back and re-explain both concepts and usage so learners can use them correctly in the future.
