Abstract

Many researches view the internet as a  virtual public sphere or forum potential that provides a space for minority groups to voice their opinions.  This article identifies the role of social media in creating political public sphere for voters with disabilities in Indonesia during Presidential Election in 2019. By applying the normative values provided by Public Sphere Theory and Sphere Public Subaltern Theory, this article determines various potentials as well as stumbling blocks of the internet as a virtual public sphere for internet users.  Virtual ethnography method is used to determine the identity of virtual communities of disabled people on three most active social media platforms in Indonesia, namely Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Virtual Ethnography enables researchers to conduct an online observation on virtual communities three months prior to  the 2019 Presidential Election. The data findings help the researchers draw conclusion  that social media has technically advocated the endeavor of the disabled people’s political rights equality, proven by the existence of disabled people’s virtual communities and the narratives of struggle for their political rights equality. However, the data has shown an inadequacy of disabled people’s virtual community to create dynamic inter-activities between its members  as this community has not been able to reflect a public sphere that is able to build public opinion  which  effectively influences public policy.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the communication strategy carried out by ethnic Papuans to be able to interact with the host culture in Semarang. The method used in this research is a qualitative type with a phenomenology approach. This research is supported by co-cultural theory and minority group theory. The informants in this study consisted of five ethnic Papuan individuals who were conducting studies in the city of Semarang. The adaptation process that occurs between ethnic Papuan individuals and the host culture shows that there are conflicts in the form of differences in cultural values, prejudices, and superior vs. inferior positions among them. In this research, we can found several strategies used by each individual to be able to communicate with host culture, as a way for them to adapt in a new cultural environment. These informants applied several strategies such as opening themselves up, and socializing well. In addition, they also have learned the local language, changed their intonation, speaking style, and paid attention to non-verbal communication to be able to interact with the host culture. Communication that runs in depth and sustainably is also achieved by searching for host culture favorite topics, as well as mixing regional languages into the conversation. Differences in understanding culture also make ethnic Papuan individuals clarify, share stories and experiences about life in Papua, and ask for help from third party. These strategies are carried out by informants who aim to achieve accommodation, namely trying to get the host culture to accept their existence in the new environment. As a conclusion, it can be concluded that the application of a good strategy will create good communication, and can create a successful intercultural adaptation process.

Abstract

The stereotype that has been attached to Papuan students has become a problem for them to show their identity. Negative stigma also appears to the Papuan ethnic group and the impact on Javanese society that still has anxiety to interact with Papuans. Discrimination and racism eventually evolved due to the physical differences that ethnic Papuans and Javanese ethnicity possess. This study aims to describe the experience of identity negotiation by Papuan students with host culture in the city of Semarang. The research method uses qualitative type with phenomenology approach. This research also supported by Cultural Identity Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory of Stella Ting-Toomey. Informants in this study consisted of five Papuan students who had been more than one year studying in Semarang and five host cultures who had been social interaction with Papuan students. The result of the process identity negotiation conducted by Papuan students with host culture in Semarang City showed Papuan students with their curly-hair and black-skinned appearance becoming the first identity recognized by the host culture. Furthermore, the process of identity negotiation is intertwined through interaction with the overt and mingle with the host culture. Questions from host culture is also an opportunity for Papuan students to explain about Papua and their own personal background. Language differences become one of the obstacles experienced by Papuan students to revealed their cultural identity. In addition, the sense of shame possessed by Papuan students is also become a obstacles in the disclosure of identity. As the stereotype develops in society about Papuan students, it is not the main cause that affects the interaction process with host culture. The stereotype only applies to the initial assessment when first meet, as the initial information and this does not apply to the next assessment. Therefore, the process of negotiating the identity of Papuan students with a host culture have a challenge not to the stereotype that develops but in the self-disclosure of Papuan students to revealed their cultural identity.
