Abstract

Wildlife Sanctuary of Danau Pulau Besar Danau Bawah is surrounded by a forestconservation area of industrial timber estates and villages inhabited by indigenous peopleswhere their lives are very dependent on the forest. The consequence of these conditions is thatforest degradation is quite serious as the encroachment of trees and forest conversionpractices to agriculture and plantations. This study aims to gain estimation on forestencroachment and total loss of trees resulting in a decline in floristic diversity in this region.Data collection on forest encroachment map using satellite imagery analysis was done byusing Supervised Classification technique. The area assessed is conservation forest areaswhich has been encroached upon or degraded areas. Vegetation data were collected by usingthe plot method that illustrates the potential, type, density values, dominance of vegetationand its importance value index. The results of extensive analysis of vegetation encroachmentillustrated the potential value of forest degradation rate. Conservation forests area wasdegraded up to± 2339.73 ha or 8.29% of the total area, while the estimated loss due to theencroachment of trees during the period 1998 to 2012 reached 550,819.24 m3 or equal to39,344.23 m3 trees per year, or 3278.69 m3 per month and 109.29 m3 per day.

Abstract

Pests that are often a household problem in several cities in Indonesia are mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches, flies. Causes of settlement pests are dirty environments, food scraps, rubbish, and waterlogged gutters / ditches. The presence of pests in the house causes occupants to control pesticides. Pesticides are used primarily to control mosquitoes, ants, flies, cockroaches, mice and termites. This research is a descriptive research that aims to explain, detail and make a description of a phenomenon or object under study. The target population in this study is households residing in Pekanbaru City, namely in the Districts of Tenayan Raya, Sail and Pekanbaru City with three clean, medium and dirty categories. Determination of the sample is done purposively with multistage sampling technique. The sample was determined purposively with multistage sampling technique and the total sample was 101 households. The data obtained were nominal, ordinal and ratio, analyzed the relationship between these data using chi-square. The results showed that the physical environmental factors of housing settlements that affect the presence of residential pests are dirty environments caused by garbage and dirty drainage / ditches. Meanwhile, biotic environmental factors in residential housing that affect the presence of pests are plants grown in residential areas in the form of ornamental plants and unkempt shade plants. The dirty condition of the residential environment is due to the lack of environmental cleaning activities and the not yet routine transportation of waste from residential homes to landfills. In addition, there is less care for ornamental plants and shade in the yard, such as pruning.

Abstract

Information on meiofauna community structure in Indonesian mangrove areas is stilllimited compared to its vast areas. This study aimed to assess the community structureand abundance of meiofauna on four stations in mangrove areas, located in Teluk UmaVillage, Karimun Regency. Samples were collected from four stations. Station 1, 2,and 3 are dominated by mangrove vegetation Rhizophora sp., Avicennia sp., Bruguierasp., consecutively while station 4 is located in an area without mangrove vegetation(Coral Sand). Meiofauna abundance was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher'stest. The result indicated that meiofauna which were found at the study site consisted of12 taxa namely, Nematodes, Copepods, Polychaeta, Turbellarian, Cumacea,Oligochaeta, Holothuroidea, Syncarida, Isopoda, Ostracoda, Cnidaria, and Tardigrada. The average abundance of meiofauna was 3.22 ind/10 cm 2 . It was also found thatNematodes was the most abundance taxa followed by Copepoda and Polychaeta at allstations. One-way ANOVA results revealed that the abundance of meiofauna in eachstation was significantly different (F=3.52 P<0.05).

Abstract

Freshwater crab is widely distributed in river, lake, swamp, canal, and pond. Riau Province has many freshwater crabs, however biological information of these organisms are poorly known. This study aimed to understand the freshwater crab types from the Kampar Utara District, Riau Province. Samples from 14 sampling sites, in the Sawah, Sendayan and Sungai Jalau village had been collected from March to April 2013 using bamboo traps and scoop net. There were 178 crabs captured and all of them belonged to a single genus, Parathelpusa. Numbers of crab were obtained from the shallow riverines with numerous aquatic vegetation and no crab caught in the rivers. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the habitat of Parathelpusa in Riau is shallow riverine with dense aquatic vegetation.

Abstract

Batang Lubuh river has significant value to communities living close to the river. Generally, the people take some advantages from the river, such as for household activities (bath, washing and dumping the waste) and fishery. In addition, the river shed is such a beneficial for agriculture and mining. The use of macrozoobenthos as an indicator to identify the change of water quality was reported by some authors, but the information from Riau Province is scarce. The purpose or this research is to know the community structure or Macrozoobenthos at Batang Lubuh river, sub – district Rambah, Rokan Hulu Regency. Sampling was conducted using Eckman Grab 20 cm x 11 cm at 5 station along Batang Lubuh river of sub district Rambah, Rokan Hulu Regency. During this research we found two species of macrozoobenthos, Brotia costula family Thiaridae and Pila scutata family Ampullaridae. The abundance of macrozobenthos in study area was 408 ind/m2. Besides, we also found that Brotia costula as the dominant species. Regression analysis revealed that the correlation between physical and chemical factors such as temperature, brightness, depth, flow velocity, COD and phosphate on macrozoobentos was negative. In addition, DO and nitrate have a positive correlation to macrozoobenthos, while pH and turbidity have no correlation to macrozoobenthos.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the diversityand abundance of macrozoobenthos in the water creeks of Batang Lubuh, Rambah District. The samples of macrozoobenthos had been taken from 5 stations using Eckman grab. Based on theresults, macrozoobenthos which were consisted of 9 species belongs to three classes ie. Gastropoda, Oligochaeta, andInsecta. The average abundance of macrozoobenthos ranged from 45 to1273 Ind/m2. Composition of macrozoobenthos was dominated by Gastropods (75,36%). The hishest abudance was obtained at station I (1408 ind/m2) and the lowest abudance was obtained at station II (45 ind/m2). The highest diversity Index (H’) of macrozoobenthos was found at Station I (1,971) and the lowest was found at Station II (0), mean while the highest dominance Index of macrozoobenthos was found at Station II (1) and the lowest was found at Station I (0.288). The analysis of water physical and chemical indicated thatthe correlation between diversity of macrozoobenthos and turbidity and also orthoposfat was negative, while the other parameters were positive.

Abstract

Monopterus albus, Zuiew 1793 (Synbranchidae) or swamp eel is rich in proteinand commonly used in Riau’s culinary. It is easily found in muddy areas, ricepaddy fields and in the organic material polluted area where this fish is able totolerate to the polluted environment. Fish living in the organic polluted area mayface the risk of parasite infection, including the zoonotic parasite that may infecthuman being. To understand the parasite present in swamp eel, a study had beenconducted. The study area of this research was a domestic polluted swamp area inthe Sawah Village (Kampar Regency Riau). Thirty eels from this area were usedfor parasite identification study. Results showed that among the samples, 14 fisheswere infected by nematode parasite Gnathostoma spp. This parasites were presentin the gonad, liver, body wall and peritoneum. The parasites were found in 5developmental stages namely egg, 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th larvae.
