Abstract

The purpose of the research is to know the effect of teaching method, student’s schema through reading comprehension on facing of Asean Economic Community. To collect the data, the writer persuade two techniques on teaching English, they are conventional and contextual technique. The method used in this research is quantitative research by using a survey method and correlation technique. The method and the technique have intention to know the correlation among dependent variable (Y), it is Reading comprehension while teaching method (A), and Student’s Schema (B) as the two of independent variables. The characteristics of the descriptive method are to give the existence of the data, straight to the problems and the recent variables aren’t manipulated by the writer. Furthermore, the writer got the data by giving short and simple of reading comprehension exercise to the participants. The writer got some findings about the effect of teaching method and student’s schema through reading comprehension. Based on the teaching method by using SQ3R found that Fh = 18.683 that is higher than Ft = 3,15 and the student’s schema is Fh = 38.163, that is also higher than Ft = 3,15. So, the result of reading comprehension score through contextual method (SQ3RR) and student’s schema have high significant score than conventional method. Finally, we may say that there is the different effect between contextual method and conventional method. Keywords: Teaching technique, SQ3R, Student’s schema, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) Pemahaman masyarakat tentang pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang di Kecamatan Pameungpeuk, Garut Selatan; (2) Mendeskripsikan nilai religius, kemanusiaan, dan pendidikan yang terkandung dalam pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang; (3) Mengetahui pola pewarisan pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan tipe deskriptif yang bertujuan memahami berbagai masalah dan fenomena sosial setempat dari sudut pandang para partisipan. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Pemahaman masyarakat Pameungpeuk, Garut Selatan tentang pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang sangatlah beragam. Menurut penuturnya bahwa pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang telah ada sejak jaman pemberontakan DI/TII di Jawa Barat yang hanya diajarkan pada lingkup orang tertentu saja sesuai pilihan sang guru besar. Syarat-syarat masuknya dapat dikatakan unik dan berbeda dengan syarat masuk pada bela diri lainnya. Pada saat ditampilkan, pencak silat ini menggunakan alat musik sebagai pengiringnya. Gerakan-gerakan silat dalam pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang sangat sederhana dalam artian memiliki ciri dan bentuk yang khusus. Pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang memiliki ciri khas dalam berpakaian yaitu menggunakan warna yang serba hitam dari ikat kepala hingga sepatu hitam; (2) dan Pola pewarisan pencak silat buhun Singa Dorang bersumber dari satu guru besar saja lalu diturunkan atau diwariskan kepada orang-orang yang ingin menekuni ilmu silat dan dianggap mampu menjadi muridnya. Abstract

This paper focuses on an exploration of Wattpad platforms and English prose course as blended learning models in undergraduate students. In the era of industrial revolution 4.0, the use of blended learning models is an alternative solution to the challenges of the times in integrating technological progress with learning. This study used descriptive qualitative research method to examine the concept of blending of wattpad platforms and English prose course. This research finding showed that wattpad platforms as a digital media resources contain intellectual property in the form of prose literary works with various genres. It is very interesting to be used as English teaching material. Wattpad offers easy access to English prose material so that it is more flexible to maximize the time and place of the English learning process. English prose that contains language content such as vocabulary, phrases, sentences, and dialogues which become the media of the writer to express his ideas to his readers. The use of wattpad platforms media helps students as literary readers in transferring the contents of literary works to their readers to obtain a more meaningful learning process because it is rich in moral and social values. In addition, wattpad platforms offer opportunities to respond and appreciate literary work through the reader response features provided by wattpad. Through blended learning design, English learning process can be done either face-to-face or online between lecturers and students to provide maximum learning outcomes. In the end, the learning design of the blending wattpad platforms with the English prose course is expected to be implemented as an alternative in learning English processes for advanced learners.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out the students’ morphological errors in synopsis writing. It aimed to know what the difficulty is faced by the students in their synopsis writing. The methodology of study is a qualitative that focused to analyze the students’ synopsis writing errors. The research finding is found that several students have synopsis writing errors in some aspects refer to omission, misordering, misinformation, and addition.

Abstract

This study aims to know the students’ ability in using a metaphor for their English poems writing. Through the poem, the poet uses the metaphor to sharpen the ideas as the media to express the feeling, thought and life experience. In this case, love poems were written by the fifth-semester students using metaphor. This study uses a qualitative method to gain a description of the metaphor analysis in students’ English love poems. In research findings, the writer found that the students use several kinds of metaphor in semantic perspective and the mystical love metaphor represented in their poems.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate in detail the implementation of theme based instruction model  in teaching extensive reading. This study is classroom action research conducted at the fourth semester students’ English Educational Sciences, Educational Sciences Faculty, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta with participant number are 40 students. Data obtained from the result of the test in each cycle. The findings showed that the learning process using theme based instruction model  in teaching extensive reading makes the students more participative and active in their classroom reading learning process, it is showed by their high participation  during the teaching is increased. Another finding revealed that there is significant influence toward the students’ extensive reading learning process from preliminary to cycle II stage in the research process. The average score of students at the preliminary stage is only 68 then it increased to 72 in the first cycle and increased significantly in cycle II with the amount of 83. It can be concluded that classroom action research is done by using of theme based instruction model in teaching extensive reading in the fourthsemester students of English Educational Sciences significantly helps the students in increasing about 21% improvement from pre-cycle to cycle II in their Extensive Reading course. This study recommends the continuation of using various teaching models for university students to improve their English language skills, especially English reading skill.

Abstract

The study aims to know how social community on gay’s life through the novel of Simon vs the Homo sapiens agenda written by Becky Albertalli. The title of this research is “ The Analysis of Main Character on Confessions of A Shopaholic Novel through Freudian Theory written by Sophie Kinsella”. Confessions of A Shopaholic novel is tells about a women named Rebecca Bloomwood who has bad behavior that are shopping addiction to fulfill her desire but she gets anxiety because of her debts and it disturbs her psychological. This research will focuses on Rebecca’s anxiety.The data are taken from the novel in the form of dialog and monolog. The writer using psychoanalysis theory from Sigmund Freud that related with anxiety theory. Sigmund Freud theory has 3 kinds of anxiety, there are realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. This theory is used to analyze the cause and effect of Rebecca Bloomwood’s anxiety.Last, the writer found the proved from Rebecca experiences three kinds of anxiety. First is neurotic anxiety caused by her mom character and it might be related to Rebecca childhood, Rebecca can’t to be honest to her mom about the cost of her skirt or clothes, she always tells if they are cheap because she knows her mom will shocked and angry if she now the truth, that can related if Rebecca can’t fulfill her desire when she was child because of her mom character. Second is realistic anxiety caused by her bad habit in shopping, that makes Rebecca has a lot of debts and that makes she becomes panic everytime met her debt collector. And the last moral anxiety caused by she felt guilty of her shopping behavior. And she becomes a liar to defense herself

Abstract

This research is an analysis of a poem written by Willliam Wordswort. The writer analyses the Wordswort's poem titled I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud (Daffodils) to reveal the denotation and connoation as the symbolic meaning. To analyze it the writer uses qualitative-descriptive method to reveal the data. The writer also uses Roland Barthes theory to analyze the symbolic meaning on Wordsworth's poem. Reasearch finding on this analysis is tha the poem of Daffodils mostly uses the naturalistic symbol so that the writer concludes that the poem has full of message of the beauty and powerful of the universe. Wordswort wants us to know his feeling through all these naturalistic symbols.

Abstract

The research aimed to analyze about the characterization of the main character and to reveal the Self Esteem of the main character on “Fireproof” directed by Alex Kendrick and Steven Kendrick in 2008. In this research, the writer uses hazo and Claudio Naranjo’s (1950) concept, which divided characterization into nine parts. To support the research, the writer use Abraham Maslow theory about Self Esteem Characterization. In the theory, explain about how people face life with more confidence, kindness, optimism, and aspects that lead on setting and achieving one’s objectives. The writer use qualitative method approach in which taking the quotes as the evidence to support analyzing the research. After doing the research, the writer discovered that Caleb as the main character has various Characterization. He also has a strong esteem to fix his household problem and maintain his marriage.

Abstract

Salah satu budaya Indonesia yang sangat populer pada kajian tradisi adalah Mantra. Secara umum Mantra dapat diartikan sebagai budaya lisan turun temurun yang dipercaya memiliki kekuatan gaib atau supranatural. Pemilik Mantra tidak hanya bersifat individu saja akan tetapi bisa juga dimiliki oleh sebuah komunitas budaya. Salah satu komunitas budaya yang menjadi objek penelitian ini adalah  perguruan pencak silat buhun yang ada di Jawa Barat. Korpus penelitian ini adalah Mantra pada sebuah  komunitas budaya yaitu Perguruan pencak silat Buhun Ameng Sepor Para Wali yang ada di Kecamatan Cibalong, Garut Selatan, Jawa Barat. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif menggunakan analisis Semiologi Roland Barthes. Selain melakukan tinjauan pustaka data yang digunakan adalah hasil dari penelitian lapangan sebelumnya dengan menggunakan teknik observasi dan wawancara langsung di lapangan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis makna denotasi, konotasi, dan  mitos  pada  Mantra  yang dimiliki oleh perguruan tersebut.  Adapun  hasil  penelitian yang perlu diketahui dalam penelitian ini adalah tinjauan semiologi  yang dinyatakan oleh Roland Barthes terhadap Mantra empat kalimah sada yang dimiliki perguruan  silat buhun Ameng Sepor Para Wali, yaitu; 1) Kalimah Pileuleusan, 2) Kalimah Bungkem, 3) Kalimah Pukulan, dan 4) Kalimah Pengobatan.
