Abstract

Water quality monitoring is one of important activity, especially in coastal water, which susceptive with pollution. Water area of Serangan Island is a tidal flat area, influenced by fresh water and sea water inputs. The existence activities, such as cage aquaculture and tourism, and input from river, are threatened to decrease the water quality in north of Serangan water. This research was conducted to the condition of water quality based on water quality standard for aquatic organisms and its spatial distribution. The parameters measured were temperature, salinity, pH, DO, turbidity, and BOD5, in 8 sample points. Some parameters measured directly on water surface (temperature, salinity, pH and DO) and the others were analyzed in laboratory (turbidity, and BOD5). BOD5 was analyzed by standard method of Delzer & McKenzie. Based on research, the result of temperature values ranged from 28,9°C-30,5°C; salinity 29,6 ppt-32,7 ppt; pH 7,7-7,9; DO 3 mg/L-4,4 mg/L; turbidity 1,9 ntu-7,6 ntu; and BOD5 2,8 mg/L-5,4 mg/L. The water quality in Serangan had a different spatial distribution in each parameters. Overall, based on research result, the water quality condition in the body water of Serangan island was good and suitable to support aquatic organisms living.

Abstract

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is generally used for determining water pollution levels in bodies of water. Estuary is a semi-enclosed body of water that can be polluted via land areas or rivers. This study was conducted to determine the spatial distribution of water pollution levels in the Suwung Estuary in Bali based on BOD5 analyses conducted in January and February 2016. Samples were taken in 20 points (19 points in the Suwung Estuary and 1 outside the Suwung Estuary as control). BOD5 samples were then analysed in the laboratory. Our BOD5 analyses used the amperometric method based on the National Field Manual for the Collection of Data Water-Quality, Chapter A7. BOD5 samples were taken at all tide cycles, during low to high tide and high to low tide. BOD5 values ranged from 0.84 mg/L–9.47 mg/L during lowto high tide and 0.96 mg/L–8.75 mg/L during high to low tide. Results of the BOD5 analyses showed slight contamination in the Suwung Estuary during both tidal conditions. The BOD5 values’ spatial distribution showed higher values around cage aquacultures, rivers, the Suwung Landfill, and around the Benoa Harbour.

Abstract

Abstract

As global plastic production continuously increases, plastic waste is no doubt becoming an emerging threat to aquatic ecosystems. This condition has directly linked to the abundance of microplastics in the aquatic system, especially in the semi-enclosed system of estuary. This study aims to investigate the microplastics abundance and characteristics in sedentary filter feeder of Mytilus spp. inhabited urban estuaries of southwest Western Australia. Microplastics were detected in 69% of total individual sampled. The mean of microplastics was 1.31±1.26 items per invidual and 0.27±0.45 Items per mussels wet weight (gww). The most common microplastics types from all samples was films (51%), then followed by fibers (43%). Our results highlight that microplastics contamination is widespread across the Western Australia estuaries and has contaminated the sedentary organisms lived in the estuary, including Mytilus spp. This study was a pilot study and is considered to be the first study in Western Australia among similar studies on microplastics in mussels. A further study in developing standard methods and expanding the study area and sample size is important to be conducted. This will give more confirmation on using mussels (Mytilus spp.) for global microplastics biomonitoring. Keywords: Microplastics; Mussel; Mytilus spp.; Urban Estuary; Southwest Western Australia
