Abstract

The objectives of the study are to assess the students' reading performance and explore their problems in comprehending English texts. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive research design was employed. The participants consisted of 76 English Department students from the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education at Universitas Sulawesi Barat, Majene, Indonesia. Two instruments were used in this study. First, a test was administered to measure students' reading performance. Second, a questionnaire in the form of a Google Form was employed to gather students' self-reported responses regarding their problems and difficulties in reading English texts. The findings revealed that the students' mean score on the reading performance test was 47.24, indicating a relatively low reading performance among the students. Moreover, the questionnaire responses indicated that most students reported encountering problems and difficulties in comprehending English reading texts. Consequently, it can be inferred that students' reading performance is adversely affected by these challenges. Based on the results, this study recommends the integration of learning media, technological tools, and effective reading strategies to address the identified problems and improve students' reading skills. These practical recommendations aim to provide educators and researchers with actionable strategies to improve the reading proficiency of EFL students.

Abstract

The learning process in listening practice is only limited to one type of text. Students have difficulty adapting to various types of audio material. Learning focuses more on speaking and writing skills than listening. As a result, students are less trained in active listening. A deep understanding of these issues helps to develop more effective learning strategies and supports students in overcoming these obstacles. Technological developments in education have influenced students' learning styles. This research aims to describe how students perceive the utilization of technology, specifically podcasts, to enhance their listening skills. The research employed a qualitative research method, specifically a case study, to gather data through questionnaires and interviews. The participants were EFL learners focusing on Listening for Professional Purposes, with 40 students completing the questionnaires and 10 representative students being interviewed. Findings reveal that students had a favorable response to utilizing podcasts as a means of enhancing their listening skills. They appreciated the simplicity, flexibility, engagement, and enjoyment of employing podcasts as media of learning. Findings from this research help lecturer develop curriculum and learning materials that better suit with students’ preferences and needs. Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the important elements that can support the students’ language proficiency. It helps students to follow and enjoy the teaching content delivered by their teachers. The educator of the EFL context, particularly at lower secondary school, attempts to design the teaching material which is oriented to enrich the students’ vocabulary acquisition. The research discovers that various ways can be used to build students’ vocabulary. One of them is literature. Therefore, this research aims to investigate can English literary works be integrated with the teaching strategies to develop the EFL students’ vocabulary. To observe it, the researchers use library research to find and analyze some sources (e.g. articles, proceedings, books) as the collected data, which discuss enriching English vocabulary through literature. The result shows that two things must be considered if teachers would like to incorporate literary works in their content. 1) Types of literary works used by teachers to enhance their learners’ vocabulary, 2) Teacher’s teaching strategy to make the EFL learners memorize the unrecognize words.

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the common errors made by students in their English writing skills. The study employed a descriptive research design, involving 100 EFL university students as participants. The primary data collection method was a writing test, and the collected data were analyzed using error analysis techniques. The findings showed that the most common errors made by the students were related to grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. The most common grammatical errors were associated with subject-verb agreement, verb tense, and articles. In terms of vocabulary errors, the study identified prevalent mistakes such as the incorrect use of word forms, inappropriate collocations, and confusion between homophones. Additionally, the analysis of spelling errors revealed that phonetic spelling mistakes were the most common, followed by misspelling of homophones and confusion of vowels. These findings highlight areas where students commonly struggle with their English writing skills and emphasize the crucial need for targeted instructional strategies to effectively address these challenges and improve students' proficiency in English writing.

Abstract

Semantris Google AI-Based Learning research has examined the students' disinterest and low level of vocabulary acquisition in English subject at MTs DDI Takkalasi. The students cited difficulty in pronunciation and other reasons for their lack of enthusiasm towards English as a difficult subject. This lack of interest and motivation is due to the absence of an interesting and enjoyable learning environment, which hinders students' ability to concentrate on their studies. In addition, the limited application of modern technology in the learning process makes this a problem that must be addressed given the increasingly advanced era. The research employed a quasi-experimental design to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention in improving students' English language proficiency. The study utilized a quantitative approach, conducting pre-test and post-test analyses to measure the impact of the intervention. The pre-test served as a baseline measurement, while the post-test assessed the outcomes after implementing the intervention. The researcher employed a quota sampling technique to select participants. The results of the Semantris Google AI-Based Learning study showed a significant difference in vocabulary improvement between the two groups, as evidenced by the T-count value of 6.858, exceeding the critical T-table value of 2.060. The rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) is supported by the mean N gain value of 0.4249 obtained from the experimental class, which falls within the moderate range according to the N gain table. This finding confirms that the use of Semantris Google AI-Based Learning is very effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of MTs DDI Takkalasi students.
