Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study are to analyze the drying characteristics of corn, and then determine the thin layer drying models which represents the characteristics of thin layer drying of corn seed. This experiment were conducted using a laboratory scale fluidized bed dryer.  The drying condition was controlled at four-level temperatures of 40 °C, 50 °C, 60 °C and 70 °C and at air velocity of 2.2 m /s. Characteristics of corn drying in this study indicate that only occurs the drying rate decreased which decreased continuously with decreasing moisture content to near equilibrium moisture content (drying after 2 hours). Two thin layer drying models, namely Henderson-Pabis Model and Page Model were fitted to the experimental data. The results show that the Page model is a best fits model which represents the driying characteristics of thin layer drying of corn seed. Keywords : Drying; Corn seed; Thin Layer Drying Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik pengeringan jagung, dan menentukan model pengeringan lapisan tipis yang sesuai dengan karakteristik pengeringan lapisan tipis biji jagung. Penelitian berlangsung dengan mengeringkan biji jagung dalam alat pengering sistem fluidasi untuk empat level suhu pengeringan yang berbeda yaitu 40 °C, 50 °C, 60 °C dan 70 °C pada kecepatan 2,2 m/s. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hanya terjadi laju pengeringan menurun yang diawali dengan pengeringan menurun tajam dan kemudian menurun secara perlahan sampai mendekati kadar air keseimbangan (pengeringan setelah 2 jam).  Pola ini semakin terlihat jelas pada suhu pengeringan di atas 50 °C. Dua model pengeringan lapisan tipis yaitu Model Henderson-Pabis dan Model Page diuji dengan mengkorelasikan model yang sesuai dengan data hasil ekperimen.  Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa Model Page merupakan model yang paling sesuai dengan karakteristik pengeringan lapisan tipis biji jagung. Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study is to analyze the occurrence of shrinkage during thin layer drying of Temu Putih (Curcuma zedoaria (Berg) Roscoe) and its effects to the drying characteristics. The experiments were conducted using a laboratory scale dryer with data acquisition and equipped with machine vision system.The drying conditions was controlled at temperatures (T) of 50°C, 60°C, 70°C,relative humidity (RH) 20%,30%, 40%, 50% and air velocity 0.78 m/s – 1.95 m/s with a specific combinations. The results show that the temu putih’s slices were shrinking as the moisture content was decreasing with almost linier correlation.The drying data was used to determine the drying constants using three models, namely Henderson andPabis, Lewis, and Page model. The effects of the shrinkage to the drying characteristics is discussed in term of the relation between surface area ratio (AR) to moisture ratio (MR). Abstract

Energy ratio analysis of various methods and technology of biodiesel production is needed to get an idea of the effectiveness of the method or technology used. This study aims to analyze the energy ratio in the biodiesel production process with a continuous static mixing reactor. RE2 values for biodiesel production using a continuous static mixing reactor with catalysts 0.3% (w/w) and 0.5% (w/w), respectively are 0.94 and 1.03. The addition of the number of modules to achieve the conversion rate required in accordance with SNI-7182 (2018) can increase the energy ratio to 1.10 in the use of catalysts 0.3% (w/w), and 1.09 with the use of a 0.5% catalyst (w/w). The energy ratio value with the addition of the module is about 10% higher than the ratio value for the bacth method using a 1% catalyst and the SMV method without catalyst.
