Abstract

Reader’s comment columns on online political news pages are locations where political discussions between citizens can emerge and develop. The reader comment column is a standard feature of almost all media sites because of its ability to initiate discussion and promote a particular article or issues within the news site. Unfortunately, in its development, the online comment column’s discussion process is often filled by incivility and disrespectful expressions, such as sentences containing insults, condemnation, or expressions full of anger. Such sentences have the potential to undermine the discussion process and encourage pointless arguments, especially in articles that discuss political polarity. This study aims to determine the extent to which incivility and disrespectful expressions appear in readers’ comments columns of online news sites, especially on polarized political issues. This study uses content analysis techniques on 403 comments in political news on Detik.com, one of Indonesia’s main news portals. The results show that although the incivility expression shows a small number, the form of disrespectful shows a high number in the readers’ comments. The highest form of the expression of disrespectful is the expression tat contains name-calling (23%), followed by hyperbole (15.6%) and the use of sarcasm (6.2%). The high number of disrespectful expressions seems to be related to the comment column service feature that allows users to use anonymous identities.

Abstract

This paper provides an analysis of different form of orientalism found in the third title of the popular Far Cry game series.  The open world system offered by Far Cry 3 brings a new nuance in the discourse of orientalism in video games, especially within the context of military shooter game. It provides both opportunities and challenges for developers to build ‘world’ as real as possible for players to explore. This construction process often reflects the orientalism practices shown by game developers in describing Eastern society and culture. Through a variety of activities such as hunting, exploring, sailing, and killing enemy forces, the player acts as a 'western mediator' who intepret the simulated Eastern world as a strange and mysterious territory.

Abstract

Background: The presence of the Internet has introduced a more complex way within the process of disseminating various images and information about celebrities, including private celebrity information such as scandals, conflicts, and various aspects of personal life that previously could only be enjoyed in classic infotainment formats in the mass media. Purpose: This study analyzes the motives of the audience’s consumption process for the content produced by various celebrity gossip accounts in Indonesian cyberspace. This research aims to dig deeper into the audience’s motives when consuming this particular information about celebrities. Methods: This research was conducted using in-depth interviews with ten sources who regularly consume the content of online celebrity gossip accounts on social media. Results: The results show that three motives encourage audiences to consume celebrity gossip online: informational motives, entertainment motives, and social motives. The information motive refers to the interviewee’s perception that online celebrity gossip accounts provide a more detailed and exclusive source of information. The entertainment motive refers to the enjoyment of the audience when they are involved in ‘imaginary drama’ and heated debate between audiences in the comment section. Social motive refers to the value of celebrity gossip as a valuable resource to start conversations and maintain group cohesion among close friends. Conclusions: The public’s interest in consuming celebrity information, whether for informational, entertainment, or social reasons, indicates an unrelenting demand for information about celebrities which in turn encourages the proliferation of gossip-providing accounts on social media. Implications: This study itself serves as an initial stepping stone to open a more serious study on celebrity culture in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper is written based on a qualitative approach, to explore the ability to use communication technology by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMES) within the culinary field to support their ability to innovate in developing countries such as Indonesia. A total of 30 small and micro enterprises from the two biggest cities in East Java province participated in this empirical study. The data collection system is carried out using a semistructured interview that looks at the ability of business users to understand the internet as a media through four digital literacy elements, namely the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create messages. Based on the results of comparative analysis, it was found that the majority of MSMES owners have just reached the access phase, which is the initial phase where users are connected to the internet and utilize the most basic features of application services. MSMES owners only use internet technology for informal communication purposes and access to entertainment. One of the most important points from the results of the interview is the existence of religious issues which hamper the willingness of some MSMES owners to embrace the internet by creating reluctance and suspicion against the internet. One of them is the usury discourse that appears on non-cash payment technology and food purchasing services by online transportation.
