Abstract

Sit Subtype refers to a stance of resting, some verbs specification of Locus is obligator and other it is optional. The aims of this research were (1) To identify Rest verbs in English and Buginese based on the Sit subtypes divided by Dixon. (2) To investigate the differences and similarities in terms of semantical and grammatical construction of Sit subtypes of Rest verbs in English and Buginese. English data were collected from Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), while data of Buginese were obtained from field research through process of observation and in depth interview. Both of the data were analyzed with description and qualitative analysis. The result of this research shows that (1) There are nine rest verbs of Sit subtype in English, they are sit (down), stand (up), lie (down), kneel, crouch, squat, lean, hang (down), and float, while in Buginese, there nineteen of Sit subtype: ttudang, ccado’, sEppo’, massampiang, massulekka, makkaddao uttu, mattulak sadang, mappasilojo’, mappalempu, tettong, llEu, maggalelu, mattojang, makkaluttu, ccuku’, rroko’, maccekkeng, ssanrE’, maggattung, and mmawang. (2) The main differences of rest verbs in English and Buginese based on Sit subtype can be seen from two aspects, clause structure and a stance of resting. From clause structure, In English a NP is followed by VP, while in Buginese is permissible that VP is followed by NP that marked by suffix –I in VP. From a stance of resting aspect, cultural background plays important role determining the variants of the rest verb.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the use of modality in news text. This research expected to improve public media literacy in identifying hoax news through modality analysis. This research presented qualitative descriptive data with systemic functional linguistic approach. This study focused on type, value, and modality orientation. The research data resource was Hoax Report of Legislative and President Election Internet Content Control Sub-directorate for the period of August 2018 by Ministry of Communication and Information of Republic Indonesia. The research result showed that modality type possibility modalization intermediate degree and modulity type obligation modulation intermediate degree to dominate other types of modality.  There were also types of modality that were not found in hoax-text news. They were modality type of usuality modalization of medium degree and modality type of inclination modulation of low degree.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyse transitivity system of sexual-related language in Eka Kurniawan’s Cantik itu Luka and its English version. This study employs qualitative method. There are 430 data of sexual related-language in Eka Kurniawans’ Cantik itu Luka and its English version. Each of version is 215. Data were collected by reading Indonesian and English version, identifying the related terms, analysing and comparing the sample, and drawing the conclusion. The collected data were analysed by using transitivity analysis proposed by Halliday. From 215 data of each version, the writer only analysed 213 clauses for each since there were two clauses were incomplete and untranslated so they could not be taken as sample of data. From transitivity analysis, it was found that the dominant process was material process both in Indonesian and English version. Kata Kunci : transitivity, sexual-related language, Cantik itu Luka, Beauty is A Wound.

Abstract

Intelligence is one of psychological factors which affect the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 40 students were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at the first-year students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and intelligence test based on the Barret assessment which were distributed to the students. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that the higher intelligence belongs to students the better ability they speak.

Abstract

The research explores the euphemism in English and Buginese. The difference of one language with other languages can be seen from the aspect of using a euphemism. Likewise, what happens to the differences and similarities of the two languages.This research attempts to describe the form and function of euphemism in English and Buginese Descriptive qualitative method is used to reveal the form and function of euphemism by comparative study to find out the similarities and differences of euphemism in English and Buginese. There are 16 forms of euphemism in English based on Allan and Burridge’s theory. While in Buginese there are 18 form of euphemism, According to this theory, there are 3 main points of the function of euphemism in English while the function of euphemism in Buginese consists of 6 main points. This research shown that euphemism form and function of euphemism in Buginese more complex than euphemism form and fuction in English.

Abstract

Millennial learners were born and raised in the digital era, with a variety of technology complete and sophisticated, such as: computer, laptop/notebook/netbook, smart Phone, iPads, PDA, MP3 player,  internet, and various other electronic devices. From childhood, they were familiar or introduced with the sophisticated gadgets that directly or indirectly influence their behavioral development and personality. Millennial generation has characteristics of behavior and personality that is different from previous generation. The attributes of millennial learners who grown up with technology may influence the current teaching strategy. In supporting the urgency of exploring the millennial learners’ attributes and needs in educational environment, the authors conduct a survey at Education Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare (UM Parepare), especially the learners who are majoring in English Education.The survey confirmed that those learners were exposed to various types of IT application. Some indications can be extracted from this study. Firstly, the learners were reasonably comfortable in utilizing various types of IT tools and expected the application to be embedded in the current application of learning. Secondly, the learners preferred to try to web in obtaining information, so the use of internet to access learning materials are highly needed. Last but not least, learners were mostly rated to adopt most ICT tools and devices.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the use of Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning to enrich the Adult EFL learners' schema in developing their speaking ability. This research also aimed at scrutinizing how the finding of Digital Learning Learning (DLL) challenges the theory of schema for adult EFL learners and exploring the learner's attitude. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The samples of this research were the third-semester students of Universitas Sulawesi Barat which belonged to two groups; the experimental group and the control group. The research data were collected using two kinds of instruments; the speaking test and the questionnaire given to both groups. The research results indicated that: (1) the Digital Language Learning can significantly improve the learners' schema in developing the speaking ability than Traditional Language Learning. (2) This research disclosed some Digital Language Learning features namely knowledge sharing, active and collaborative learning, learner-centered, activity, and networking. Those features are the digital language learning better than Traditional Language Learning to enrich adult EFL learners in developing their speaking ability. (3)  Most of them agreed that the Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning enriches the learners' schema in developing speaking ability. Of most significant importance, this research's novelty contributes to the schema theory that digital language learning better than traditional language learning, particularly interactivity and networking.

Abstract

The study is to reveal the significant different between the learning in Vocational School and in general Senior High School. The appropriate teaching-learning processes are based on their needs. The data in this study were qualitative descriptive data obtained through interviews and questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to the students and alumni of computer and network engineering program students. The data analyzed qualitatively. The aim of this study was to identify some factual information about the needs of vocational students in learning English, especially in the English-language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and some of language components in English (Grammar & Vocabulary), and to analyze the conformity between the content of English textbooks with the vocational students’ needs. The subjects in this study were the vocational students and English textbooks, both SBC and Curriculum 2013 edition, of 4 (four) SMK which organized the TKJ department in Mataram. The results showed that the needs of students towards learning English is to meet the academic professions and the future needs of the students, which involved the skills of the language and some of the language components. Whereas in the case of conformity between the content of the English textbooks and the vocational students’ needs, it was found that the English textbooks was more focused on describing the English language competences generally and not directed to the Department of TKJ itself.

Abstract

The research aims to elaborate the apology strategies employed by Buginese speaker and explore the structure of apology based on social relation between interlocutors. The result reveals that Buginese speaker use various strategy of apology in apologizing but the most dominant apology strategy do Buginese speakers employ in apologizing is acknowledgment responsibility with four substrategies expressing lack of intent, expressing self deficiency, accepting blame, expressing of embarrassment. Moreover, the complaint, showing the effort, showing desire, and brushing off the incident as unimportant is exist in the data as modification of apology strategy from six scholars and others prior researcher. Therefore, it can conclude that Buginese people employ indirect apology such as acknowledgment of responsibility, explanation, an offer of repair, interjection, address term in their apology eventhough it combines with direct apology whether in the beginning, middle or in the end of utterances or response to show her/his polite behavior to others.
