Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of STAD strategy on the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was XI MIPA 1 students which consisted of 35 students. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using tests on analytical exposition text. The test of this research was multiple choice test consisted of five options (A/B/C/D/E). The result of the study was found that the mean score of pre-test was 46.14 while the post-test was 61.03. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a signifant effect of STAD strategy on the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai. In other words, teaching reading comprehension through STAD strategy is an effective way to solved the students’ problem on the reading comprehension.Keywords: Effect, STAD strategy, reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed at finding out the reading ability of the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The population of this research was the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru. The number of sample was 34 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice test items with 30 questions. Each text consists of 6 questions which cover the components of reading and the components of descriptive namely finding main ideas, finding factual information, finding meaning of vocabulary words, finding references, finding inferences and finding social functions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. Based on the findings of this research, it was found that the students’ reading ability of the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts was in good level with the mean score was 61. The implication of this research is that the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru have a good ability in reading descriptive texts.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research analyses the teachers’ perception on the implementation of bilingual program of SMP and SMA Dharma Yudha Pekanbaru. The data was collected by giving a survey adapted on the Gonzales’s theory (2013) about level of satisfaction of teacher teaching in English. This research design is descriptive involving 31 bilingual teachers. All the teachers participated as respondents for this research. The conclusion of the study reveals that the bilingual teachers’ satisfaction category was high (2.77) from likert scale used (1-4).Key words: bilingualism, perception, implementation, satisfaction

Abstract

Abstract : This research was aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Kerinci Kanan in comprehending recount texts. The population of this study was the second year students in academic year 2018/2019. The sample size was 30 students out of the population chosen by using cluster random sampling. The data were collected by administering a reading test of recount texts. The collected datawere analyzed and calculated by using Microsoft Excel. The findings of the research showed that the mean score of the test was 57.2 (mediocre level). Meanwhile, the mean score in terms of finding factual information is 65.3 (good level). The mean score in terms of finding main idea, meaning of difficult word, reference and restatement is 58,57.3, 56.6 and 48.6 (mediocre level). Therefore,it could be concluded that the ability ofstudents in comprehending recount texts was categorized into mediocre level.Key Words: Ability, Reading Comprehension, Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to discover the effect of Two Stay-Two Stray (TSTS) Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was X TKJ-2 students which consisted of 34 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. This research was pre-experimental and the data were collected by means of pre-test and post-test design in the form of speaking test which focused on describing objects. The data were analyzed using five components of speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results showed that the score of the pretest was 60.47, the post-test was 72.98 while the improvement from both scores was 12.51. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of TSTS Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru. In other words, the teaching of speaking by through Two Stay-Two Stray Method, as one of the alternative speaking activities, has an effect on the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Two Stay-Two Stray Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses the phenomenon of code switching in a novel titled NY Over Heels written by Dy Lunaly (2003). The researcher used a study document as the way to collect the data and The research design of this research was a library study with qualitative research. A Study document is getting the data about a case or variable from note, book, magazine, novel, etc (Arikunto, 1990). The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. Based on the research that had been done, the research comes to some conclusions. Firstly, As the result, there are 87 data that have been found by the researcher. The data showed that Emblematic or tag switching is about 8.04% from 87 data. Intra-sentential is about 37.93% from 87 data. Inter-sentential is about 54.02% from 87 data. The dominant type of code switching found in the novel is inter-sentential from 28 chapters. Secondly, Besides the type of code switching, it was found that the reasons why the characters in the novel use code switching. From seven reasons that Hoffman (1991) states, there are six reasons have been found from the 87 data code switching from the novel that researcher classify. The data showed that expressing group identity is 28 times or 32.18%. Talking about particular topic is 19 times or 21.83%. Emphatic is 12 times or 13.79%. The repetition used for clarification is 5 times or 5.74%. Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor is 1 time or 1.14%. And the last Interjection is 22 times or 25.28%. In this section of the reason of code-switching is the highest calculation has found is expressing group identity is 28 times from 28 chapters.Key Word: Code-Switching, The Novel Dy Lunaly.

Abstract

Abstrack: This study seeks to explore the form of code mixing and lexical categories which are often exploited in the entertainment corners of local newspapers in Pekanbaru. It was conducted from January 2018 to July 2018. Qualitative reasearch and descriptive analysis method were applied in this study. The finding discovers that the forms of code mixing which had been observed in the entertainment corner are the insertion of words and hybrid. It also finds out that mostly 54.84% of English lexical categories have been code mixed into the entertainment corner of local newspapers in Pekanbaru were nouns. Therefore, the researcher confirms that there are some code mixing used by journalist into the entertainment corner of local newspaper in Pekanbaru.Keywords: Analysis, Code-Mixing, Entertainment Corner, Local Newspaper

Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses student’s errors in using punctuation when writing narrative text and analyzes what possible causes of errors in writing punctuation in narrative text which made by the tenth year students of SMAN 2 Tapung. In this study, 30 students employed were taken as the sample of this research. These 30 students consits of 3 classes, there for classes X1, X2, and X3, each class is taken 10 students. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The descriptive qualitative data were collected from the tests by filling the correct punctuation marks in the narrative text that has been provided. The findings of this study indicate that students still do not understand the use of punctuation in writing narrative text. The punctuation marks used in this study are comma, period, capital letter, exclamation marks and question marks. There are many errors in the use of capital letter. However, in the use of question marks, students’ abilities can be categorized as good. This phenomena happened because the students are lack of knowledge about punctuation, and the students still confused to apply the type of punctuation. Key Words: Errors, Punctuation, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of Reciprocal Teaching Method on reading hortatory exposition text of the second year students of SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was XI MIPA 1. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using test on hortatory exposition text. The test this research was multiple choice test consisted of five option (a/b/c/d/e) The result of the study was found that the mean score of the pre-test was 74.75 while the post-test was 83.87 Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Reciprocal Teaching Method on reading comprehension of the second year student of SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Pekanbaru. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in students’ achievement before and after being thought by Reciprocal Teaching Method. It can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Reciprocal Teaching Method gives positive and enjoyable learning environments in the classroom. It also enhanced the students’ participation and interaction during the learning process. Students comprehended the story completely by the prediction that helped students to develop their reading and concentrating ability through Reciprocal Teaching Method.Key Words: Effect, Reciprocal Teaching Method, Reading Comprehension.
