Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Today, the studies on post-colonial urban space in relation with Indonesian modern prose can be said to be minimal. On the other hand, in the history of Indonesian literature, we are endowed with writers like Armijn Pane, Idrus, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Iwan Simatupang, Budi Darma etc., who consistently write prose with the background of the ex-colonial towns. Unfortunately, there is no enough studies of the encounter between those writers with the city as a representation of a post-colonial experience. This paper tried to track the integral relationship between Indonesian modern prose writers to the city by using the spatial space theory in relation to the study of post-colonial literature in Indonesia. This analysis used the spatial theory by Sara Upstone as the approach, especially regarding to space (spatial) city. Keywords: spatial, city, postcolonial.

Abstract

This paper aims to compare two animated series and critically look at the story elements which represent the plurality of the society. Recent studies commonly pointed out that Upin-Ipin (UI) and Adit-Sopo-Jarwo (ASJ) describe the genuine culture of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago, which is multiculturalism. Most scholars see cultural diversity in these animations as a fact. However, the study on reading a plurality of cultures as a value rather than a fact is rarely conducted. This study aims to analyze the works of two countries, Malaysia’s Les’ Copaque and Indonesia’s MD Animation, to demonstrate the inadequate category of cultural diversity as a ‘fact.’ Parekh’s theory of multiculturalism makes way to map and understand the plurality of society the series represent. At the same time, the cultural diversity presented in the series must be understood as a postcolonial pluralism landscape. By understanding the multicultural situation as postcolonial pluralism, this study concluded that first, multiculturalism in UI and ASJ performs cultural traces that derive from the country’s history, including colonialism. Second, multiculturalism in UI and ASJ is thick with ethnoreligious pluralism problem as a form of cultural penetration by European colonial, which is still apparent.

Abstract

Abstract

In the Indonesia-centrism historiography devide et impera is generally understood as the intrigue of the colonizer to dominate the archipelago. Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC)'s cunning tactic is related to the colonialism of abundant natural resources in the archipelago. The historical narrative that emerged was that the VOC was accused of being the ringleader of dividing the nation in order to smooth out the ambitions of monopoly on spices and other commodities. The European Meneer was labeled as an antagonist who maneuvered in order to control the maritime trade network of the archipelago. On the other hand, in historical reconstruction, trade competition between brothers and/or local rulers tends to be ignored. In fact, their conflict (internal Malay) is more entrenched, massive, and latent. This article aims to explore medieval primordial conflicts along the West Coast of Sumatra. As a narrative balance, the novel Nur Sutan Iskandar, which takes the background from 1665-1668, is examined because it offers an alternative discourse about a dramatic chronicle between traders and rulers of Aceh and Minangkabau. In modern Indonesian literature, Hulubalang Raja (1934) is known as a historical literary work. From the perspective of New Historism, the conflict between Raja Adil and Hulubalang Raja is a representation of the Malay people. The colossal conflict between the Malays is understood as the author's literary strategy to trick Balai Pustaka's censorship. In addition, the text of the story can also be interpreted as a message to the readers of the 30s decade who are experiencing contractions to realize the idea of a nation-state which will later be called "Indonesia". Instead of cornering the Kompeni, the main problems of the people of the archipelago at that time were exposed through colossal conflicts between the nation's children. In the romance narrative of the Balai Pustaka tradition, the dominant narrative is the internal conflict of the Malay. Meanwhile, the double storylines of the shortcut novels seem confusing and incoherent. However, the fictional building was related to the repression of the colonial side through Balai Pustaka which aggressively censored, tightened, and banned books that were considered subversive to the power of the Dutch East Indies.

Abstract

Gus Yaqut's statement regarding Surat Edaran Nomor 5 Tahun 2022 tentang Pedoman Penggunaan Pengeras Suara di Masjid dan Musala garnered controversy. The reason is that the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia is considered to be comparing the call to prayer with the barking of dogs. The public reacted: the chairman of GP Ansor was accused of blasphemy against Islam. This study examines the statement of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia using the Piercian semiotic approach. Using Morris's scheme of sign systems, this study examines verbal-linguistic facts that are considered fatal. The research method used is qualitative with a note-taking technique. The results of the data analysis are described descriptively. The research data in the form of syntagms were tested as semiotic facts, both grammatically and pragmatically meaningful. The results showed that from the three categories of Morris semiotics (syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) which were operationalized in the statement of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, there was no fact of blasphemy. The syntactic relation between “adhan” and “dog barking” is a grammatical construction as an analogy which in public rhetoric is used to express “audiotive noise” in society. The analogy is not a comparison (binary) to make an alignment but concretizes a statement so that the message is understood easily by the recipient of the message. The analogy is carried out so that the substance of the Circular Letter of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia is accepted by the public. Meanwhile, the facts that have happened show that the opposite confirms that the language entity in the community is very dynamic, wild, and sometimes acrobatic from the initial goal.

Abstract

Abstract

This research focuses on Instagram uploads from Holywings Indonesia which juxtapose two sacred names (Muhammad and Maria) with bottles of liquor (Gordon's Gin). The promotional upload then went viral until Holywings Indonesia was deemed to have blasphemed religion. This paper places the Holywings Indonesia promotional upload as a material object of semiotic studies. In the researcher's opinion, these uploads represent sign phenomena and tagging systems. Every language expression, image, color, and so on has a basis of meaning implied behind the sign. For research purposes, Saussure's scheme of signs (semiology) is used as a methodological tool in understanding the meaning of signs (markers and signifieds) uploaded by the Holywings Marketing Campaign.
