Abstract

Introduction: Genital hygiene is an important part of women’s health and is essential for protecting reproductive health. Women adopt many genital hygiene behaviors, which will have direct and indirect effects on genitals and possible sexually transmitted infections. This systematic literature review aimed to know the types of genital hygiene behaviors practiced by women and assess the relationship between genital hygiene behavior and genital infection. Methods: A systematic search of the electronic databases, PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, JSTOR, and SAGE, for literature published between January 2001 and 2021. The keywords used were “genital hygiene behavior” AND “genital infections” AND “women OR female.” The inclusion criteria focused on genital hygiene behavior and the incidence of genital infection. The included full papers with observational research methods followed the PRISMA guidelines. After reading the full content of the included studies, key themes and concepts were extracted and synthesized. Results: In total 383 articles were screened. Five articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The analysis revealed four categories related to genital hygiene behavior among women: underwear hygiene, bathing habits, menstrual hygiene, and coital hygiene. Genital infections included bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. The review showed that incorrect and inadequate genital hygiene behavior increases the risk of vaginal infection. Conclusion: A higher incidence of genital infections occurred in women with improper genital hygiene practices. It is necessary for health professionals to educate women about good genital hygiene practices in order to reduce the rate of genital infections.

Abstract

Background: Sexual and reproductive health issues are increasingly of concern world wide among other circumstances related to genital hygiene. Poor genital hygiene will increase the risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Health Belief Model (HBM) is a set of self-perceptions that determines the health behavior of an individual. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the application of the health belief model with genital hygiene practice of housewives in Cangkringan. Method: This study employed mixed-methods with sequential explanatories strategy and cross sectional design. A total of 101 housewives, including 2 housewives, 2 husbands, officers of clinics that serve STIs screening and 1 non-governmental organization were recruited using quota sampling. Data were collected with a questionnaire, interviews and were analyzed using linear regression. Triangulation was conducted to achieve validity and reliability. Results: Genital hygiene had a positive relationship with the perception of vulnerability (b:0.97; 95% CI: 0.87 to 1.06; p < 0.01), self-efficacy (b: 0.02; CI 95%: 0.00 to 0.05; p 0.05), and cues to genital hygiene action (b:0,16; 95% CI: 0.08 up to 0.23; p < 0.01). There was a negative relationship between genital hygiene with the perception of hygiene barriers (b:-0.13; 95% CI:-0.18 to 0.09-; p < 0.01). The linear regression model showed that independent variables altogether contribute to 84.5% of genital hygiene. Housewives stated that genital hygiene was important, but maintained inappropriate practices, such as frequently use of femininity cleanser, wearing tight underwears, and using pentyliner. Conclusion: There are four components of Health Belief Model associated with genital hygiene. Keywords: Health belief model, genital hygiene

Abstract

People with mental disorders experience an increase every year so that it  becomes a global issue that requires attention in handling. The problem that often occurs in  people with mental disorders is experiencing relapses. Patient recurrence can occur due to lack  of family support, especially caregivers in providing care to sufferers. This study aimed to  examine the association between emotional expression and self-efficacy with recurrence of  mental disorders in Pagu Public Health Center, Kediri Regency, East Java.  This was an analytic observational study with a crosssectional design. A  sample of 38 families who had family members with mental disorders was selected for this study  by multistage random sampling. The dependent variable was mental disorders recurrence. The  independent variables were emotional expression and self-efficacy. The data were collected by  questionnaire and analyzed by logistic regression. The recurrence of mental disorders increased with high emotional expression (OR=  12.25; CI 95%= 1.65 to 90.96; p= 0.14) and poor self efficacy (OR= 7.42; CI 95%= 5.08 to  51.06; p=0.042).  The recurrence of mental disorders increases with high emotional expression and  poor self efficacy, it is hoped that health workers can provide psychoeducation so that the caregiver can provide care to family members with mental disorders.
