Abstract

Abstract

This study had three fold objective which were finding the effectiveness of ethanol extract of permot leaf (Passiflora foetida Linn.) towards mortality of Rhpicephalus sanguineus (R. sanguineus) larvae in vitro and also identifying lethal concentration and lethal time. Completely randomized design was used with six treatments and four replications. Five R. sanguineus were used in the treatment for all replication. The observation of mortality was done every ten minutes in five hours. Rhpicephalus sanguineus larvae were dead if there was no movement. The collected data was analyzed using ANOVA factorial and followed by Duncan’s test. The obtained data showed that ethanol extract of permot’s leaf ethanol extract was effective toward mortality of R. sanguineus larvae in vitro. The suspension of 10% extract concentration of permot leaf ethanol extract has a similar effectiveness as Noticks®. Probit analysis stated that LC50 can be reached by using the 4% concentration in two hours and 2.4% concentration in five hours. LC95 can be reached by using the 6.5% concentration in two hours and 3.93% concentration in five hours. The quickest LT50 can be reached in 0.91 hours and LT95 2.37 hours after treatment with 10% concentration.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaf extract on the viability and motility of spermatozoa of rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to heat (40 ºC). A total of 25 rats aged 2.5 months and weighed 200 grams were randomly divided into five groups. Rats in K (–) group were not exposed to heat and without Moringa leaf extract administration. Rats in K (+) group were exposed to heat (40 ºC) for 1 hour daily without Moringa leaf extract administration. Meanwhile, rats in P1, P2, and P3 groups were administrated with Moringa leaf extract 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW/day, then exposed to 40 ºC 1 hour daily for 14 days. The results showed that exposure to 40 °C one hour per day for 14 days in K (+) group caused a decrease (p <0.05) on viability and motility of rat spermatozoa compared to those of the K (–) group. The administration of Moringa leaf extract (P1, P2, and P3 groups) was followed by an increase (p <0.05) in viability and motility of rat spermatozoa compared to the K (+) group. Viability and motility of rat spermatozoa in the P3 group (given Moringa leaf extract 400 mg/kg BW/day and exposed to 40 ºC 1 hour daily for 14 days) were not significantly different (p >0.05) compared to the viability and motility of rat spermatozoa in K (–) group. It could be concluded that administration of Moringa leaf extract 400 mg/kg BW/day can maintain the viability and motility of spermatozoa in white rats exposed to heat.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of kepok banana peel extract (Musa acuminata) given by per oral in decreasing levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in lung of male mice (Mus musculus) which was exposed to cigarette smoke. The 24 experimental male mice were divided into 6 groups. The therapy was given for 14 days, all mice were sacrificed and lung MDA level were examined with thiobarbituricacid (TBA) methods. The result of the data analysis test using one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) showed that there were significant differences between the group of animals that exposed to cigarette smoke ( = 840.50± 186.47 nmol / g) and the group of animals that were given with extract of kepok banana peel 56 mg / kg bw  ( = 6471.25 ± 69.25 nmol/g). Besides that, there was an significant difference between the groups of animals that were exposed cigarette smoke ( = 840.50± 186.47 nmol / g) with the group of animals that were given with vitamin C 260 mg/kg bw ( = 555.25± 61.16 nmol / g). It could be concluded that extract of kepok banana peel and vitamin C could decrease MDA levels in lung of male mice which was exposed cigarette smoke. The increased therapy dose gave affect in lowering levels of malondialdehyde in lung.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the parasite species and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites that infect cats hospitalized at several veterinary clinics in Surabaya using the faecal examination method. The type of this research is an observational with research design used in this study is a cross sectional study. The samples used in this study were 100 cat feces that were hospitalized at several veterinary clinics in Surabaya and each took 25 fecal samples. This sample was examined using native, sedimentation, and floating methods. The results showed 35% of samples were positively infected by gastrointestinal parasites with 28% parasites as single infection and 7% as mixed infection. The gastrointestinal parasites that identified in this study were Toxocara cati, Ancylostoma sp., Cryptosporidium sp., Isospora felis, and Isospora rivolta. The results of statistical analysis with chi square test showed that sex and age were not related to the prevalence of the gastrointestinal parasites in hospitalized cats at several animal clinics in Surabaya.
