Abstract

It has been widely agreed that conjunction constitutes one important aspect in building cohesion. Despite the fact, the use of conjunction in both EFL and ESL students’ writings is deemed problematic. Some problems found by quantitative researchers cover misuse, overuse and underuse. Some others revealed by qualitative researchers involve misuses but with specific aspects like meaning and register. The types of errors mentioned were also found in Indonesian context. This study aims at investigating qualitatively the conjunction errors committed by Indonesian EFL university students in their written compositions. This study revealed that distraction, wrong relation and semantic incompletion are respectively the most frequently committed errors. Further research examining the major problems constituting the main cause of the error occurrences need to be conducted.

Abstract

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the way an EFL student reflects on her identity and study abroad experience through a series of pantuns, a four-lined rhyming Indonesian poem. This study conducts a poetic identity analysis on ten English pantuns written by a Ukrainian student who studied English education in Indonesia. The poems were analyzed in terms of their context, content, and stylistic choices. The study unveils that through the ten pantuns, the participant voiced the sociocultural and racial issues she faced as an international student in a non-English speaking country, contemplating her membership in local and global communities, expressing the sense of camaraderie she felt with Indonesian EFL learners and with multicultural community, and constructing new identity in the third space. Further, she recounted her pantun writing experience as challenging due to the genre’s economic word count and rhyming scheme, but satisfying because writing pantun brings her closer to a form of Indonesian literature, and its culture by extension. In pantun’s prefatory section, the participant set the tone of the poem and drew metaphors of her personal and emotional insight, whereas in the following content section, she wrote rhyming lines while expressing said insights. Thus, this study illustrates how writing pantun helps a language learner exercise her linguistic and literary awareness while also enable her to explore her memories, emotion and perception. Pedagogical implication is also presented in this study.

Abstract

Although post-editing of machine translation (PEMT) has been much discussed and spoken among students in higher education institutions, little empirical evidence has been reported regarding the students’ real practices in their academic life. To fill this practical gap, this article explores the students’ experiences in dealing with PEMT in a Theoretical Foundation of Translating and Interpreting (TFTI) course. This exploration elaborates practical insights into how the students initially started practicing translation through PEMT in their actual day-to-day practices. Fifty-eight English students studying in an undergraduate program in a prominent public university in Indonesia voluntarily participated in this qualitative case study. Data were collected from students’ focused-group discussion (FGD), survey questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and students’ documents and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings showed that post-editing process provides the students with experiences in building their text knowledge to enable them to have high awareness and sensitivity to the academic texts. In addition, in PEMT practices, the students’ experiences were explored through the implementation of translation methods and techniques expected to build their awareness in PEMT with regard to language structure and language function. These experiences have given some empirical inputs for the lecturers to design relevant tasks and apply various translating practices for students’ more meaningful learning.

Abstract

This study investigates how cooperative learning facilitates students in learning critical thinking in reading and to find out the benefits and challenges during the implementation of cooperative learning in one vocational school in Cimahi. A case study is utilized by using instruments of classroom observations, questionnaires, semi structured interview and students’ written tests. The findings show that the implementation of cooperative learning facilitates students develop their critical thinking and enhance critical thinking dispositions in reading. Three features which contribute to the development of students’ critical thinking in reading are: the encouragement of student-student interaction; the provision of group purposes; and the provision of stimulus to the students’ development of thought and ideas. The aforementioned features promote benefits which involved higher motivation and involvement, increased opportunity for language use, and developed interpersonal relationship. Nevertheless, these benefits are constrained by the availability of time, students’ English proficiency, and students’ contribution to the groupwork. It is recommended that further researchers conduct the similar study in a longer period to make sure that the key elements of cooperative learning are well-structured.Keywords: cooperative learning, critical thinking

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the target needs (i.e. necessities, lacks and wants) of the students to inform academic writing courses materials. A case study design was employed as this design to provide in-depth data information. To collect the data, questionnaire and interviews were used. Twenty-three undergraduate students of English department at a private university in Mataram West Nusa Tenggara who take academic writing course in the 2019-2020 academic year participated in the study. The result of the study showed that the students need to learn the types of writing texts, vocabulary and construct sentences into paragraph, have good skills in writing different genres since they are lack of grammar knowledge and vocabularies, and improvement on the aspect of teaching writing. This finding may promise implications for updating the current curriculum and materials as practiced for tertiary level English department students in an attempt to keep up with the latest changes in the methodologies of English language teaching. This study recommends that lecturers and universities should conduct a need analysis regularly and updated the curriculum with such insightful needs.

Abstract

This article presents the outcome of a case study research which is particularly aimed at investigating dimensions of learner autonomy in EFL teaching-learning particularly in an English education program and situations under which learners learn autonomously. To collect the data, a questionnaire adapted from Murase (2009) was distributed to fourty first-year undergraduate students of a university in Bandung and interview was addressed to nine undergraduate learners. The findings showed that all dimensions of learner autonomy are found and each dimension is reflected in various degrees. The degree of technical and political dimensions of learner autonomy is in respect not as satisfactory as expected. However, the degree of learner autonomy in the psychological and socio-cultural dimension is high enough. There are four major aspects related to situations under which learners learn autonomously, including the subject matter, the lecturer, the time, and the challenging task. It is recommended for further research to investigate learner autonomy in a more specific context of class, for example learner autonomy in a speaking class, in order to get more in-depth data.

Abstract

Mixed-ability Class (MAC) is often unavoidable in the practice of education. MAC usually consists of many students with very different characteristics, in terms of their ages, proficiency, motivations, educational backgrounds, learning styles, etc. Despite the abundant research about teachers’ strategies in teaching English in homogenous classes, research of teachers’ strategies in teaching MAC is relatively unexplored. This study investigated the teaching strategies used by 10 (ten) English teachers in Cimahi as the respondents. Questionnaire was used as the instrument. Using descriptive analysis, the result showed that most lecturers perceive that teaching English in MAC gives advantages as well as disadvantages. Most of them admit that MAC provides greater opportunity for teaching innovation and creativity so they can develop themselves professionally. They are challenged to adopt many problem solving approaches to the difficulties they face in the classroom. However, many of them still have problems in managing the class such as: controlling students’ discipline, maintaining students’ interests, conducting effective learning, error correction and selecting classroom materials. The implementation of teacher training program, classroom action research and students’ placement test are recommended to avoid very diverse MAC. Keywords: Mixed Ability Classes, English Foreign Language, Teacher Strategies

Abstract

This study aims to examine the journey to maturity of the main character, Landon Carter, in A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, by analyzing the literary elements that construct it. Employing a textual analysis method, this study is framed within Allport’s (1961) theory of maturity, and to discuss the analysis, Bean and Moni’s (2003) theory of young adult literature is also employed. The findings show that Landon’s journey to maturity is depicted mostly through the use of one literary element, namely characterization peculiar to Reams’ (2015). Based on Allport’s (1961) general criteria of maturity, throughout the story, Landon shows six types of maturity: (1) extension of the sense of self, (2) warm relatedness of self to others, (3) emotional security, (4) realistic perception of skills, (5) self-insight, and (6) unifying philosophy of life, and three types of immaturity: (1) an ego-centric sense of self, (2) emotional insecurity, and (3) lack of self-insight. Based on the analysis, several moral values can be obtained by young adult readers with different perspectives from reading Landon’s journey to maturity, such as the importance of being mature and the struggles of attaining maturity.
