Abstract

This research paper (article) aims to reveal the correlation between religion and culture of “Keureumbok village” community based on the theory proposed by Geertz. The researcher investigated the paradigm displayed through an interpretive anthropological context to pinpoint religion as a system consisting of various symbols that have meaning. According to Geertz, religion is labeled as a system of symbols that exists and constructs cultural patterns, which in turn can form a model. In other words, religion is a model for reality (truth), which can only be perfectly and precisely acquired through interpretations. An interpretative method is a way that socially presents and scrutinizes empirical data about the real truth (reality), or social fact. The more sources can be collected, the higher the trust will be earned. In the case of religion and culture in the lay community of “Keureumbok village” in Aceh, the researcher viewed that the link was more closely related.  It is found that “Keureumbok” people rely more on religious symbols, which are the manifestations of cultural elements. People, who previously value religion, instead decide to blend in religious life to avoid being shunned from the community to such an extent that religion and culture are interconnected in Aceh. Surprisingly, cultures dominantly play a role in society than in religious values. AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan melihat kaitan agama dan budaya pada masyarakat Gampong Keureumbok berdasarkan teori yang diungkapkan oleh Geertz. Peneliti mengkaji kerangka pemikiran yang ditampilkan melalui konteks antropologis interpretatif. Untuk memahami agama sebagai suatu sistem yang terdiri atas berbagai simbol yang mempunyai makna. Menurut Geertz agama dideskripsikan sebagai suatu sistem simbol-simbol yang ada dan membuat pola-pola budaya, yang pada gilirannya dapat membentuk model. Dengan kata lain, agama adalah model untuk realitas hanya dapat diperoleh dengan baik dan tepat melalui cara-cara interpretasi. Metode interpretatif adalah sesuatu cara yang menyajikan dan menjelaskan data empiris secara sosial mengenai kenyataan yang  sesungguhnya (realitas), social fact (fakta sosial). Semakin banyak sumber laporan maka akan muncul kepercayaan yang tinggi terhadap laporan tersebut. Refleksi penulis dalam kasus agama dan budaya pada masyarakat awam di Keureumbok Aceh, lebih erat kaitannya. Penulis menemukan bahwa masyarakat Keureumbok lebih percaya pada symbol agama yang merupakan manifestasi dari unsur budaya. Masyarakat yang sudah memahami agama justru memilih melebur dalam kehidupan keagamaan, agar tidak dikucilkan dari kelompok masyarakat, sehingga di Aceh agama dan budaya saling terkait dan bahkan lebih dominan budaya yang berperan dalam masyarakat dari pada nilai-nilai agama.

Abstract

The interfaith dialogue movement in the top-down current as described above, namely the movement originating from the state, was welcomed by various communities in Indonesia as a bottom-up current, namely the interfaith dialogue movement originating from the people. At least in this bottom-up flow, there are two communities, namely dialogue developed in academic institutions, and dialogue conducted or facilitated by civil society institutions, such as NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), both focusing on dialogue and raising issues. -Other issues related to dialogue. In this research, the researcher focuses only on two groups, namely the state (top-down current) and academic institutions (bottom-up current) trying to examine religious movements in the realm of inter-religious dialogue using social movement theory. There are three key concepts in social movement theory which usually play a very important role in determining the success of collective action. The three concepts include (1) political opportunity structure, (2) mobilizing structures, and (3) framing of action.

Abstract

Participation of the Muslim community in the celebration of the Panghuni Uthiram Ritual (case study in Banda Aceh). In 2014, to be precise on Sunday, April 20 2014, the Hindus of Banda Aceh celebrated a religious ritual called Maha Puja Panghuni Uthiram Triruvila at the Palani Andawer Temple, Gampong Keudah, Kuta Raja District, Banda Aceh City. The religious procession received widespread attention from the majority Muslim Banda Acehnese, so they came in droves to witness the ritual up close. The formulation of the problem is to find out how the form and level of participation of the Muslim community in Banda Aceh City in the celebration of the Panghuni Uthiram Ritual and what are the factors that encourage and prevent the Muslim community in Banda Aceh from participating in the celebration of the Panghuni Uthiram Ritual. To answer the problems that arise and the achievement of objectives, this research is a field study (Field Research), the method used in the preparation of this thesis uses qualitative and descriptive methods and for data collection is done by interviewing several respondents who are in accordance with the discussion, observation, and documentation. . Judging by the current phenomenon, both Muslim and non-Muslim communities in Gampong Keudah have been able to form a good participation in the celebration of the Panghuni Uthiram Ritual in Hinduism. The form of participation that occurs in Gampong Keudah is in the form of personnel participation. This happens because energy is considered the easiest and most effective form of participation. The participation of energy also prevents the Muslim community from directly interacting with the Panghuni Uthiram ritual celebration activities.

Abstract

This article descriptively aims to explain the function of Teumangkai in the Krueng Lebar community of South Aceh. Teumangkai is a traditional healing process that uses herbs and prayers/mantras from Quran and hadith readings. In the process it is done in two ways, firstly ngon geusampoh (sweep it on the sick person who is outside the sick area), secondly geupajoh or geujeb, (eat and drink). There are also those who use objects or amulets. This study is in the form of qualitative research by obtaining data through observation, interviews and documentation. This research shows that: First, there are still a large proportion of people who really believe in traditional medicine using Teumangkai. Second, the community's strong belief in treatment using Teumangkai is caused by low knowledge and education and the effect on real healing for patients from various diseases. Third, there is experience passed down from generation to generation in this traditional medicine. Besides that, the lack of medical personnel or hospitals is also a factor for the people of Krueng Lebar to choose this traditional medicine. Artikel ini bertujuan menjelaskan fungsi Teumangkai dalam masyarakat Krueng Luas Aceh Selatan. Teumangkai merupakan sebuah proses pengobatan tradisional yang menggunakan ramu-ramuan serta doa/mantra dari bacaan Quran dan hadis. Dalam prosesnya dilakukan dengan dua cara, pertama ngon geusampoh (menyapunya pada si sakit yang berada di area luar tempat sakit), kedua geupajoh atau geujeb, (dimakan dan diminum). Ada juga yang menggunakan benda-benda atau azimat. Studi ini dalam bentuk penelitian kualitatif dengan memperoleh data melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Penelitian menunjukan bahwa pertama, masih ada sebagian besar masyarakat yang sangat mempercayai pengobatan secara tradisional dengan menggunakan Teumangkai. Kedua, keyakinan masyarakat yang kuat terhadap pengobatan menggunakan Teumangkai tersebut disebabkan oleh pengetahuan dan pendidikan yang rendah serta efek terhadap kesembuhan yang nyata bagi pasien dari berbagai macam penyakit. Ketiga, adanya pengalaman yang turun-temurun dalam pengobatan tradisional. Selain itu minimnya tenaga medis atau rumah sakit juga menjadi faktor masyarakat Krueng Luas lebih memilih pengobatan tradisional.

Abstract

Issues surrounding curriculum integration have been discussed worldwide. Some argue that curriculum integration contributes meaningfully to empowering students’ multi knowledge and skills, while others claim that curriculum integration has detrimental effects on teachers and students’ study load. This qualitative study investigates the English teachers’ and Islamic boarding school principals’ perceptions of integrating English subject materials of Curriculum 2013 into the Islamic boarding school curriculum context. Eleven participants (two Islamic boarding school principals and nine English teachers teaching at two Junior Islamic boarding schools in Banda Aceh) were selected purposively. The findings indicate that integrating English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum positively contributes to developing students’ general and Islamic-related knowledge. The results also suggest that the integration of English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum can be performed by switching the listed materials in the syllabus of Curriculum 2013 with the Islamic-related materials. The study unveils that among these curricula integration challenges are the inadequacy of Islamic-related knowledge that the teachers master and the subject overload. These two main issues are the main challenges to integrating the English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum.
