Abstract

Abstract Palembang is famous for not only songket clothes but also specific food such as pempek and mie celor (stemmed noodles). Many Small Micro Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) need coaching in order to succeed in their busines. They do not have sufficient financing sources and strategies to grow and face fierce business competition. One of necessary assistances is helping them improve their packaging and develop persuasive advertisements through social media promotion. The two SMMEs, Pempek Cek Eha and Mie Celor Ujuk Imam 26, are located in Kecamatan Ilir Barat I Palembang. This community service activity was carried out to help fostered the SMMEs to survive in their current situation through product packaging and online advertisement development. Good product packaging can be used for online advertising activities, which are expected to increase sales during the pandemic. Their previous packaging seemed to be careless and unattractive. Their promotions and sales were managed conventionally through direct face to face and limited online transactions, as well as from personal information, so that the orders had not been maximized. The educative program was conducted through counselling and couching the SMMEs. Data from pretest and posttest showed positive effects of the program. Keywords: promotion, advertisement, persuasive, packaging, culinary.

Abstract

Summary writing is widely used as both a means for assessing student learning as well as a way to use other sources in academic writing. As writing teachers we know that our students have difficulty with summarizing information in an organized and accurate way. In their summaries our students focused on trivial information, or simply copied entire sentences from the source text and gave their own opinions and experiences in their summaries. Unskilled readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing paragraphs; other readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing larger chunks of information. They need an approach to sort information, and they need to see how skilled readers with sufficient background knowledge identify important information and summarize. The difficulty of the materials must be graded so that the students’ strategies and skills can be developed progressively Learning should start from single paragraph level summarizing and work up to section summarization and summarization of entire chapters. Finally, they can summarize from multiple sources. The teacher’s instructional materials and models of how to use an appropriate summarization strategy of various text lengths, content area and complexity will improve the ability of students to summarize. The students’ background knowledge is also important in making judgments about the important information in summarizing.

Abstract

This study suggests that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources is key to deep learning and useful to language learning strategies. The participants of this study were 68 students from three classes studying in upper intermediate reading course at English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in Palembang. The t test indicated that the students who received strategic summarizing intervention in this study received significantly higher marks after eight reading and summarizing measures using computer based concept map. Collected data from questionnaire and focus group discussion showed that during summarizing from multiple sources using computer-based concept map the students employed prereading, conceptual reading and summarizing strategies. We could note the student activities which stressed the various aspects of conceptual learning. It is suggested that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources using computer-based concept map is used in English reading because it allows students to process information from sources, without which they are not able to organize main ideas into a coherent summary. It also facilitates students to become familiar with the textual structure of English academic summary writing.

Abstract

To meet the demand of current industries, the ability to write in English is highly essential in Indonesian vocational higher education. In today’s business world, students of business departments require a set of advance skills in writing business documents such as business letters and product descriptions. This research investigated the types of English sentence structures and errors in the descriptive paragraphs written by business management students of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya. The method used was quantitative case study research. A total of 44 descriptive paragraphs were analyzed by using syntactical structure analysis and surface taxonomy-based errors. It revealed that all types of sentence structures were used in the descriptive paragraphs. There were 34.77% simple sentence structures, 22.96% compound sentence structures, 26.36% complex sentence structures, and 15.91% compound-complex sentence structures. Thus, the most widely used was simple sentence structures. Regarding the errors, it was found that only a few errors were made by them; omission (3 errors), addition (7 errors), misformation (19 errors), and misordering (1 error). Hence, misformation was the dominant error. In summary, the students wrote their descriptive paragraphs in simple sentences mostly and made errors in misformation the most.
