Abstract

This paper aims to examine how the secular media in Surakarta represent Islam in the case of Charlie Hebdo. Therefore, this study used discourse analysis of Theo van Leeuwen focusing on how the subject or actor of the show in the media. This study concluded that the media represent Islam not only with “Western ideology” through idioms such as radical Islamist militants and terrorists, but also with "Islamic ideology". It is done through the construction of Islam as a religion of moderation and delegitimize Charlie Hebdo as magazine satyr abusing freedom. Various strategies are used ranging from strategy passivation to interdetermination. In this case, there are two poles of attraction in both media, namely the Western and Islamic ideology. If both media are quoting from Western sources, the Western ideology dominates the media narrative. Conversely, when both media used Islamic sources, the influence of Islamic ideology dominates the narrative of both media.

Abstract

This paper discusses about the research that had examined the female librarian stereotype in Indonesian films, particularly release during the 2000s. Using the paradigm of cultural and media studies, this research examined six Indonesian films portraying female librarian. The units of analysis in this study are those film scenes that were either set in a library or that portrayed female librarians. The method used to analyze the data source is the Critical Discourse Analysis. The results of this study showed that the female librarians were stereotyped in Indonesian films, such as age, dress and hair style. Librarians were depicted as an old woman with the old-fashioned dress and outdated hairstyle. The film’s portrayal of the female librarians were representative of the stereotype in general, i.e. passive, stuffy, and orderly. But on the other hand they were depicted as a friendly, smart, helpful person, and sometimes breaking the rules. Library profession was portrayed traditionally as “library-keeper”, not as someone who plays a role in information and knowledge dissemination.

Abstract

Since the end of 1990s, Indonesian media have been suddenly becoming feminists. It could be seen from the proliferation of images of what so-called “female individualism”. In this sense, women are depicted as being independent, success, beautiful and empowered. These images are followed by the rise of images of less superordinate and less powerful men than as previously required by patriarchal order. Subject-object relationship in terms of gender becomes fluid and interchangeable, as if the problem of inequality is already fixed and resolved. Such media images of postfeminism and postmasculinism are, in fact, disembedded and disconnected from the real problems of gender prevailed in the society. Those images tend to celebrate feminist success, but at the same time devaluing and negating feminist political activism. In this regard, integrating feminist perspectives into academic media studies in Indonesia becomes one of pivotal steps to challenge disarticulartion of feminism done via and by the media.

Abstract

Abstract: Gender issue in pesantren (or Islamic Boarding School) is a part of larger gender problem in Indonesia, either in education and in religion. The main indicator of this problem is vivid gap between males and females. This issue is actually not a new thing for there are a bunch of Indonesian novels serve it. Those novels touching pesantren in the theme usually put the women as a powerless, subordinated, inferior, marginalized person. However, the novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban(PBS) tries to empower women. In the novel, the woman is portrayed as brilliant, brave, and also critical toward the pesantren hegemony such as: the power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding on classical books (kitab kuning), social relation between men and women in pesantren ciircumstances, and many more. Abstract

The news report of Tempo.co about both Ahmad Fathanah and Ratu Atut Chosiyah corruption cases took the discourse of mother and women as the main idea. Mother and women were involved in both cases that tend to be reported exaggeratedly with a huge sensation by using connotation dictions. Media disclosed not only their scandal in corruption but also personal and private life. The motherhood feature of those women become the underlined a major issue in the news. This research focused on three concerns: the discourse formation of (re)motherhood in the news report of both corruption cases, the subject position of mother and women in the news, and the reason why the discourse of mother and women become the main topic in the news report. Critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills was used for showing how media has constructed subject-object and reader positioning on the news. The result showed that the discourse of motherhood was not only reproduced by the nation, but also by the news in online media (Tempo.co). Media has ideological instruments (i.e. wording, grammar, and reader position) to narrate, to evaluate, and more important to define the role of mother and women to fix with the conventional socio-cultural values. They have represented mother and women as independent and modern subject and at the same time, they also circumscribed the definition to make sure that they remain in the ideal type: as the guardian of the family, the companion of the husband, and the guide of the children. To cite this article (7th APA style): Dedees, A. Abstract

This research aimed to identify how the current development in technology and mass media is affecting the form and the way people fulfill intimacy in Indonesia by using Anthony Giddens' concept of intimacy transformation. In his book The Transformation of Intimacy Sexuality, Love, and Eroticism in Modern Societies (1992), Giddens stated that there are changes in intimacy relations in society from time to time which are influenced by the pace of modernity. This research showed that there are influences from mass media and technology in changing concept of intimacy and how to fulfill it in society, where previously only recognizing the concept of matchmaking and marriage as way to fulfill it, are now beginning to shift in other ways, such as the use of matchmaking columns in mass media, online dating applications, to the internet and games. However, patriarchal culture is something that still limits change with all existing stereotypes and rules, especially for women. This reflected in the negative stigma of their active role and the potential for sexual harassment in cyberspace when fulfilling intimacy. Abstract

This article examines a flourishing Islamic youth movement in Indonesia, #IndonesiaTanpaPacaran or Indonesia without Dating. This movement calls for hijrah (literally means an action of moving to another place) from Western dating habits to ta'aruf or an Islamic practice of getting married without dating among the Muslim millennial. This article aims to explain the emergence of this movement. Drawing approach from social movement theory, the writer argues that this movement is culturally embedded since piety, religious commodification and political resistance against existing political nuance are overshadowed the emergence of this anti-dating movement. It is found out that this movement is an offshoot of banned Islamic organization Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) that continuously struggles to revive the past transnational rule of khalifah (caliphate) in Indonesia. Consequently, the concept of hijrah in social media campaign does not only to promote Islamic lifestyle like ta'aruf but also to promote caliphate as an alternative to secular democracy. This study is presented given the fact that the research on Islamic youth movement in social media is still lack of attention, despite the so-called hijrah movement is legion and may strategically important to make social change through the use of social media.

Abstract

AbstractPopular media such as animation or anime offer a contested arena. This study analyzes the anime titled Kimi no Na Wa (2016) as an arena by looking at certain scenes. The aim is to see how gender subjectivity and sexual differences are formed in this anime. Using the film feminist psychoanalysis method from Laura Mulvey and Kaja Silverman, this study concludes that the narrative structure in this anime is still influenced by male bias. This has an effect on how the formation of gender subjectivity which makes women as the to be looked at while men as the bearer of the looking. In addition, gender-biased cameras have the potential to create the same gaze from the audience (especially male heterosexual) towards female characters. When Taki transgresses into Mitsuha's body, she performs a fetish form to satisfy her desires for a woman's body. But on the contrary, when Mitsuha was in Taki's body, there was hardly a scene that directly shows the fetish form that women do to a man's body. This is possible because women's bodies can be discussed sexually, but their thoughts are forbidden to have sexual thoughts. In contrast, a man's body is rarely talked about sexually but he has the freedom to think sexually. In the end, the narrative structure of this anime seems to reproduce the patriarchal system of Japanese society in the formation of gender subjectivity throughout the story.
