Abstract

This research aims to identify the meta-discourse feature mostly used and the difference between interactive and interactional categorize among Local, National and International Journals. This research was a corpora analysis employed journal articles as the object of the research. Data were collected purposive random sampling with a total of sampling were 30 articles taken three journals. The data is a cropped introduction section to be made a Microsoft file and processed by using the AntConce Application. Data were analyzed using a qualitative method by focusing on the use of the meta-discourse feature and different interactive and interactional categorized by Hyland’s (2005). The results show that: 1) The meta-discourse feature that is mostly used in each journal is interactive. The interactive has the same tendency used among Local, National and International journals. 2) The transition categorizes the most frequent in the Local, National and International Journal. 3) The meta-discourse feature that is least used was found in the Asian EFL Journal, the frame markers that are least used were found in Joall journals, and the endophoric that is the least used was found in Joall journals. 4) There are significant differences in the use of interactive and interactional in each journal. So it can be concluded that each writer has known and used meta-discourse in writing articles, the use of meta-discourse is not influenced by the level of journals, both Local, National and International Journal, but is influenced by the writer competence in expressing his thoughts, and the culture of the author's environment. Besides, the articles published in each journal are influenced by the editor of the journal itself.

Abstract

Menulis artikel dan memublikasikannya di jurnal nasional atau jurnal internasional merupakan salah satu prasyarat yang harus dilakukan oleh guru untuk mengajukan kenaikan pangkat ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Dalam hal ini, guru Bahasa Inggris, khususnya yang ada di Kota Bengkulu mengalami kesulitan dalam menulis artikel jurnal ilmiah. Mereka kesulitan untuk mengembangkan ide dalam menulis artikel jurnal ilmiah. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk melatih para guru bahasa Inggris dalam menulis artikel jurnal ilmiah untuk dipublikasikan di jurnal nasional. Pelatihan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan para guru bahasa Inggris dalam menulis artikel jurnal Nasional. Kegiatan ini menggunakan konsep workshop dengan beberapa kegiatan proses seperti presentasi materi, penulisan artikel, dan bimbingan teknis. Berdasarkan hasil pelatihan terbukti bahwa pengetahuan dan kemampuan para guru bahasa Inggris semakin baik setelah mengikuti pelatihan ini. Hasil angket menunjukkan> 80% peserta pelatihan memberikan respon yang positif. Selain itu, analisis data hasil uji regresi juga menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara pelatihan menulis artikel jurnal terhadap kemampuan guru bahasa Inggris di Kota Bengkulu. Nilai Sig = 0,002 <0,025 artinya hipotesis nol ditolak. Dengan demikian, pelatihan menulis artikel jurnal nasional berdampak pada perubahan guru bahasa Inggris di Kota Bengkulu.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate the English teacher's challenges in teaching speaking through the online platform when the preparing lesson plan, while the teaching performing, and when the evaluating. This research employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory strategy to reveal the data-oriented to the aforementioned focuses. Fifty-two English teachers engaged as the correspondent of the questionnaire while thirteen English teachers were selected as the participant in the interview. They were selected based on the purposive sampling technique and taken from Senior High Schools in Indragiri Hulu Regency. To gather the data, the questionnaire and interview were deployed and were further analyzed by using the interactive model data analysis. The findings demonstrate that the majority of English teachers had a negative category in teaching speaking through online platforms with an average of total score 122. The challenges when preparing the lesson plan covered four aspects: prepare teaching materials, activity, media, and prepare evaluation materials. Subsequently, the challenges when preparing the lesson plan are the teachers should have not prepared online-based learning media, searched for online speaking topics, and searched for additional teaching materials. Moreover, the lack of internet quota and connection made the students got difficulty joining classes online. In turn, while the teaching performance is teachers difficulty in coping with students' behavior, difficulty in motivating students, and giving example topics on speaking online. Furthermore, in evaluating the teacher's challenges difficulty in assessing student assignments because at the time of online learning students there were only a few students who responded to the teacher. Further studies are expected to seek possible solutions regarding the challenges faced by the teachers in teaching speaking online.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the correlation of students’ listening self-efficacy and their listening comprehension.. The population of this research was the Eighth Semester English Education Study Program Students of Universitas Bengkulu in the 2018/2019. The sample was taken by using total sampling of the students who has TOEFL score below 450.  There were 40 students as the sample from two classes. There were two research instruments used in this research, listening test and self-efficacy questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the r-obtained was 0.20. It means that there is a correlation between the students’ self-efficacy and their listening comprehension.  As a consequence, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Since the r- obtained (0.20) was lower than the r-table(0.3125), the correlation was not really significant.

Abstract

Abstract This Study was a mix method research which used the combination of both qualitative and quantitative data. This study was aimed to find out the types and the dominant communication strategies used by the fourth semester students of English Study Program in University of Bengkulu. The instruments used in this research were observation checklist adapted from Dornyei (1995) and video recorder to collect data. The data were analyzed by Dornyei’s Theory of Communication Strategies. The population of this study was fourth semester students of class A of English Study Program. The samples of this study were selected with purposive sampling technique. The findings of this research were: (1) the students used all types of communication strategies, namely: a) message replacement, b) topic avoidance, c) message abandonment, d) circumlocution, e) approximation, f) word coinage, g) non-verbal signal, h) literal translation, i) foreignizing, j) code switching, k) time gaining strategy, and l) appeal for help, and 2) the dominant type of communication strategies used by the students is time gaining strategy with 47.87%. The students mostly used time gaining strategy because they already have good proficiency but they still needed times or delays to produce the utterances.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension. The research applied correlational study which used quantitative design. The sample was 273 of twelfth grade students of science class at SMAN 5 Bengkulu. The data were collected by using two instruments: (1) the reading self-efficacy questionnaire which was used to measure the students’ reading self-efficacy and (2) reading comprehension test which was used to know the students’ reading comprehension. The correlation between the two variables was calculated by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS 15. The result shows that there is a significant correlation between reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension. The score of significance level is < 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) which means that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. So, it can be inferred that the higher the reading self-efficacy, the higher the reading comprehension. Keywords: Reading Comprehension; Self-Efficacy

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate teacher’s questions based on the levels and functions of questions in English classrooms at Senior High Schools. The study was a descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were six EnglishSenior High School teachers In Rejang Lebong Regency. For collecting the datatape recording, observation checklist and interview were employed. Result related toresearch questions showed that the teacher’s questions were categorized remembering, comprehending and applying and analyzing level. None of the teachers used questions in, evaluating and creating level of the Bloom’s Taxonomy.In the research only five function of questions were found namely: practicing skills,checking prior knowledge, recapping, and checking understanding. From thefinding it can be concluded that The questions asked by the teachers in classroomsare in lower order cognitive level and not all function of questions (from elevenfunction of questions) were applied by the teachers.

Abstract

Reading as a fundamental language skill become an essential skill in academic and social life. Especially at school, the teachers need to enrich the strategy in teaching and learning process. The objectives of this study were to find out 1) the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of the ninth grade (IXC) of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu, 2) some factors influence the change of students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade (IX C) of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) involved 25 students of the ninth grade of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu. Quantitative and qualitative data were employed to investigate the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension and the factors influence the changes of students’ reading comprehension. Reading comprehension test, observation checklists and field notes, and interview were the instruments of this research.  Based on the test results, the percentage of students who had achieved the success criteria increased from 8% at the baseline to 80% at the end of the study. It can be concluded that applying Thieves strategy improved students’ reading comprehension and it was influenced by the student’s factors (attention, interest and participation) and the teacher’s factors (enriching the material and classroom management).

Abstract

This study aimed to find the effect of “schema development technique” on students’ reading ability at senior high school students. It is also aimed to find whether schema development technique could improve students’ reading ability on the aspect of literal comprehension, inference and vocabulary building. The population was the tenth graders of SMA Negeri Rejang Lebong, from which two classes were selected as the research sample. The instrument was a reading test. The instrument draft had been tried out. The try out was done to find the validity and item characteristics of the original draft. From 90 try out item questions, 42 of them were found to be valid and 48 were invalid. The reliabilty index was 0,898 (high). The findings of the research revealed that schema development technique was effective for improving students overall comprehension. It was also effective for improving two aspects (literal aspect and vocabulary building). However, it was not effective for improving students’ reading ability on inference aspect. It’s caused by the nature of inference which requires for background knowledge towards the reading text.

Abstract

This study aimed to ascertain proportion of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based on the revised edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the language skills and language knowledge of tasks in the textbook of “Bahasa Inggris of class ten employed in senior, vocational and Islamic senior high schools published by the Ministry of Education of the republic of Indonesia and its relevancy to the 2013 curriculum. By employing a content analysis research design, this study employed content cards as the instrument for analysing the textbook, in which two techniques were used to administer the data, namely content analysis and documentation. The data were analysed qualitatively using Brookhart including compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting and concluding. Results turned out that the proportion of HOTS in language skills is integrated well. In addition, the content of higher-order thinking skills in tasks of the compulsory English textbook of “Bahasa Inggris of class ten employed in senior, vocational and Islamic senior high schools” is relevant to the 2013 curriculum. It has fulfilled the standard suggested by the Decrees of the Ministry of Education. It is recommended that the teachers need to train students extensively on the implementation of the HOTS to achieve the goals targeted in the 2013 curriculum well.
