Abstract

This article discusses two different types of contemporary writings both“scholarly feminists” and “internet commentators” on women in Islam;particularly issues related to gender equality such as women’s rights, statusand creation. By comparing two different groups of writers, the objective of thispaper is to discover whether there are significant differences between them onissues of women in Islam, which shed light on modern Islamic thinking. From abrief investigation of several books as representatives of scholarly feminists, andseveral websites, which publish many articles on women in Islam, asrepresentatives of Internet commentators, it is clear that both groups seem tohave similar attitude on the topic. They tried to clarify a common misperceptionof women in Islam which is commonly portrayed to be “a second class”. Moreover,it is clear that the message of ‘Internet commentators’ seem to be moreeffective and more likely to prevail.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the views of democracy and the implementation of democratic rules in real politics by the Islamic political party that has a democracy platform in Indonesia, Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS). I examine PKS views on the relationship between Islam and democracy and its manner of recruiting members and leaders to show that this Islamic political party is not a threat to democracy at all. PKS believes that democracy goes to the roots of Islam and the Indonesian context in which they exist; and that it is a good political tool for an Islamic party like PKS to achieve its political goals. Taking the process of recruitment of members and leaders of PKS as examples, the paper also shows that the commitment of PKS to strengthening democracy in Indonesia could be seen in their process of recruiting leaders. PKS has practiced democratic rules in their internal party activities, particularly in the way they used to recruit their members who would be nominated as parliamentary members and how they choose their own leaders. However, it is necessary to note that in terms of member recruitment and expanding the cadres of the party, the PKS seems to have a special strategy; that is, encouraging their cadres to have big families.[Artikel mengulas pandangan Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) mengenai demokrasi dan implementasi nilai-nilai demokrasi dalam kehidupan politik.

Abstract

This paper discusses the views of Partai Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) on democracy and its implementation in real politics in Malaysian context. I analyze PAS views on the relationship between Islam and democracy, their style in recruiting members and leaders of the party to demonstrate that this Islamic political party follows democratic rules. PAS believes that democracy and Islamic values are compatible and it is a good political tool for an Islamic party like PAS to reach its political goals.  By examining the process of recruitment of members and leaders of PAS as the cases, the paper shows that commitment of PAS in toning up democracy in Malaysia could be viewed in their style of recruiting their leaders. The PAS has exercised democratic rules in their internal party activities, particularly in the way they recruit their members and how they chose their leaders.

Abstract

The conflict does not automatically lead to disintegration. Sociologist like Georg Simmel and Lewis Coser reinforce this assumption. Conflict can also function to strengthen social groups and restore social integration. Conflict and integration (harmony) like two sides of a coin, different but still one. This paper supports the assumption above. After the conflict between the community and Ahmadiyah’s followers in the three Regencies (Garut, Tasikmalaya and Kuningan), they live in harmony (integration). This fact in line with the argument of Georg Simmel and Lewis Coser. This study showed that the conflicts occurred in three regencies (Garut, Tasikmalaya and Kuningan), did not make the Ahmadiyah adherents disintegrated and crumbled. But on the contrary, Ahmadiyah followers increasingly integrated, solid and live co-exist with the non-Ahmadiyah community and live harmoniously.

Abstract

The article compares the achievement of Partai Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) and Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) in the latest general election held in 2013 in Malaysia and in 2014 in Indonesia. The writer finds that the political performance of PAS and PKS has indicated differently contrast results. While political electability of PAS in the 2013 Malaysia?s general election has disappointed this party, PKS has successfully proved that surveys held by a number of survey institutes?predicting that the party would cease within the 2014 Indonesia?s national election?were totally false. Many political figures of PAS have failed to gain positions in the legislative assembly. Meanwhile, in viewing PKS?s political performance during the 2014 national election, one may assume that this party was luckily survive. This is because, a number of surveys conducted before the election had predicted that PKS could be considered lucky when it was able to gain five percent of vote, as its former president has been suspected of being corrupt for his involvement in cows import. However, the fact shows that PKS has not only magnificently survived but it was even able to gain almost seven percent of voters? vote. Unfortunately, PKS was unsuccessful to achieve its political target to be the biggest three of national vote.

Abstract

This paper discusses the participation of educational institution, Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) in promoting and campaigning moderate and tolerance Islam in Adelaide, Australia. The article also attempts to close reading of the discourse of moderate Islam itself to answer fundamental questions about what moderate Islam is, what CITE attempts to do, can do, and cannot be expected to do. This study is essential to fill the gap in the dearth literature discussing the role of educational institution in campaigning moderate Islam in Australia. This study was based on observation and interviews conducted with main figures of CITE and the staff members or the supporters of the group who actively involved in their activities in Adelaide, Australia. The result of the study shows that as an educational institution, CITE has significant roles in promoting moderate Islam and straightening negative image of Islam in the West.
