Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out 1) the aims of students to learn English; 2) the aspects of English students want to learn, 3) the purpose of learning four English language skills namely reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and 4) the difficulties students face when learning English. This research employs a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. The respondents consist of students taken from six regular classes in an informatics study program. The data are obtained by distributing questionnaires. The result of the research indicates that 1) the main aim of students to learn English is for the needs for finding a job; 2) the students want to learn all aspects of language, especially reading; 3) the students’ main difficulties when learning English are limited vocabulary and insufficient understanding of grammar.

Abstract

Textbooks that are too difficult to read will decrease students’ motivation in learning, while textbooks that are too easy to read will make students less interested in reading them. Therefore, the readability analysis needs to be done so that the textbooks used as learning media are suitable for the students who become the target readers of the books. This study analyzes the texts in Junior High School English textbooks entitled “English in Focus” grades VII, VIII, and IX published by the Center of Book Archieve of the Department of National Education by using cloze procedure. The tests were carried out in SMPN 1 Gunungputri and SMP Sejahtera 2 Cileungsi, involving students in grades VII, VIII, and IX. The texts tested were adapted to their grade levels. The tests were made in the form of 100 words which were then omitted at every 5th word. The readability results of “English in Focus” textbook are that not all texts in the book are suitable for students who use it. If the books are considered as suitable teaching material, these books need some changes because there are 6 texts from the total of 24 texts that are considered too difficult for students.Keywords: textbook assessment, readability, cloze procedure

Abstract

Gamification is the comprehensive use of game features with the aim of improving student’s performance and motivation in learning. The purpose of this present research is to conduct a systematic review of previous relevant research using the Quizizz and Kahoot! in learning English during 2021. The research method employed a Literature Study through a search on the Google Scholar page. Synthesis of literature data was analyzed from various components of students’ needs in learning English using Quizziz and Kahoot! The results point out that the online learning application Quizizz and Kahoot! have various advantages for learning English, among others, increasing the students’ ability and motivation in participating in the process of learning English actively and communicatively.

Abstract

Although Indonesian Government has established a policy on the necessity of integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into school teaching to enhance the quality of education, there is still a concern that ICT utilization is not as mandated by the government. This study investigates the use of ICT in English teaching based on the perceptions of teachers and students in International-Standard School Pilot Project (RSBI). The data collected through questionnaires, observations and interviews in three High Schools and three Vocational Schools with RSBI certification in Padang are from the first semester of 2011/2012. The result shows the application of ICT in teaching English is only to access information and not to communicate. Also, the lack of supporting infrastructure is still the main barrier to the use of ICT in English teaching. Nevertheless, teachers and students agree that ICT is very useful for teaching English. Besides, this study finds the implementation of blended learning in Vocational Schools through an online, government-funded learning program DynEd.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the needs of employee class for learning English to be used as a reference for curriculum development and making syllabus for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This study identified students’ motivations, constraints faced by the students and the needs for learning English based on four basic language skills. This research uses descriptive analysis method with quantitative approach. Data was obtained through distributing questionnaires to 159 respondents from first semester students of the 2018/2019 academic year at one of the private university in the East Jakarta. They are generally aged 21-29 years with the last education of vocational schools and have jobs as private employees. The identification of their language skill shows that generally the respondents have English basic skill. Analysis of questionnaire data states that students' motivation in learning English is to improve academic grades and be able to speak English. While their main constraints are limited vocabulary and not understanding English grammar. The results of needs analysis concluded that students need English to understand texts and instructions along with to obtain information that is useful for their studies.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how students' attitudes in using social media in learning English with blended learning. This research is a survey research with quantitative approach. This research was conducted at a private university in East Jakarta. The research population included 87 Informatics Study Program students, consisting of 71 male and 16 female students. The research instrument was in the form of a questionnaire revealing about students' perceptions towards blended learning and the use of social media in learning English, which consisted of three parts, namely: student data (6 items); English learning model choices (7 items); and students' perceptions about the use of social media, including attitudes and problems encountered in learning English (15 items). The research data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and t-test. The findings showed that the frequency of the use of the internet or electronic media for learning or obtaining information within 1 day affected the attitudes of students in the use of social media in English learning. However, the results of the study also showed there is no significant difference in students' attitudes in using social media in learning English based on their gender.

Abstract

Pandemi covid 19 memaksa pemerintah membuat kebijakan sekolah dan kampus untuk menyelenggarakan pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis persepsi mahasiswa tentang efektivitas komunikasi pengajaran jarak jauh darurat di masa pandemi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Data penelitian ini adalah persepsi mahasiswa terhadap efektivitas komunikasi pengajaran jarak jauh darurat yang tercermin dalam angket kuesioner yang mereka isi. Untuk mendapatkan data penelitian, kuesioner disebar kepada 100 mahasiswa DKV Unindra yang dipilih secara acak. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan mayoritas mahasiswa tidak puas dengan pengajaran jarak jauh darurat yaitu 13% menjawab sangat tidak puas dan 43% menjawab tidak puas. Dari sisi efektivitas komunikasi, mahasiswa tidak setuju pengajaran jarak jauh darurat berdampak postitif terhadap komunikasi antara dosen dan mahasiswa dengan presentase 50% menjawab tidak setuju dan 4% sangat tidak setuju. Dalam hal partisipasi, mahasiswa setuju bahwa pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat mendorong mereka untuk lebih terlibat dalam kelas dengan presentase 6% sangat setuju dan 64% setuju. Dalam hal penguasaan keahlian berbahasa mahasiswa, mahasiswa setuju pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat membuat pelajaran membaca (reading) Bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menarik yaitu dengan presentase sangat setuju 3% dan setuju 52%.  Begitu juga untuk menyimak (listening), mayoritas responden setuju bahwa pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat membuat pelajaran menyimak (listening) Bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menarik dengan presentase sangat setuju 5%, setuju 49%. Untuk keterampilan berbicara (speaking), kebanyakan mahasiswa tidak setuju terhadap pernyataan bahwa pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka dengan presentase tidak setuju 54%, dan sangat tidak setuju 5%. Selain itu mereka juga tidak setuju bahwa pembelajaran jarak jauh darurat membuat pelajaran menulis (writing) menjadi lebih menarik dengan presentase tidak setuju 43%, dan sangat tidak setuju 4%. Untuk hal kepercayaan diri, mahasiswa setuju pengajaran jarak jauh darurat membuat mereka lebih percaya diri dalam komunikasi di kelas, dengan presentase sangat setuju 10%, dan setuju 47%.

Abstract

Pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris telah berubah dari metode konvensional di mana siswa dapat berada dalam kondisi pembelajaran tatap muka dengan guru dan teman-temannya, kini menjadi modern dengan bantuan teknologi yang melibatkan berbagai platform seperti Quizizz yang dapat di akses secara gratis dan mudah digunakan. Media Quizizz sudah sering digunakan pengajar dalam proses pembelajaran maupun penilaian secara daring.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui pandangan mahasiswa Teknik Informatika terhadap penggunaan Quizizz sebagai media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Desain penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menjabarkan data yang diperoleh, metode pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioneryan memanfaatkan google form. Selain itu, dilakukan wawancara kepada beberapa responden mahasiswa untuk mendapatkan analisis data yang lebih komprehensif untuk memperkuat hasil kesimpulan kuesioner. Secara keseluruhan, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Quizizz diterima secara positif di kalangan mahasiswa karena efektivitas, kelayakan, dan kemudahan penggunaan, serta dapat meningkatkan motivasi mereka. Maka, penggunaan Quizizz dapat menjadi salah satu media pembelajaran dan penilaian pembelajaran bahasa inggris pada tingkat universitas

Abstract

This study aims to determine the teacher's perception of using the Wordwall.net application as a medium for learning English vocabulary. This research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The research data was the teacher's perception of using the Wordwall.net application as a medium for learning English vocabulary. The data source is teachers at SDN Makassar 06, East Jakarta. Data was collected using a questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire were then tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted. This study found positive perceptions from teachers towards the use of the Wordwall.net application as a medium for learning English vocabulary. This study concludes that teachers are satisfied with learning media Wordwall.net to use in teaching English vocabulary
