Abstract

The implementation of genre-based approach in EFL teaching has been increasingly attracting many EFL teachers’ attention. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of Genre-Based Approach in teaching and learning process of reading skill at SMPN 1 Purbolinggo. This study was descriptive qualitative. Thetechniques of collecting the data were observation, interviews and documentation. The data was analyzed by referring to theory of the stages of genre-based approach developed by Feez and Joyce., (1998). The total of the sample of this study was 33 students in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Purbolinggo. The findings showed that the English teacher still had some weakness in implementing genre-based approach. Moreover, the students still had many difficulties in generic structure and social function of the text. Keywords: EFL learners, Ganre Based Approach, Reading skill.

Abstract

The aim of this study was improve the students’ English speaking skill through action learning strategy at 9 of SMP Islam Assya’roniyyah. The method used Classroom Action Research (CAR) that developed by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (2013). It consists of four steps namely, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Improvement the problem in this research was brought by the series of cycle. The procedures of research were performs by administrating two cycles. Each cycle contain four steps which are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The collecting data used test, observation, and interview. Analyzing data used the mean each post-test in cycle. The result showed that the students’ speaking skill improved. It can be noticed that there was an improvement in every cycle from the students’ behavior and achievement. Action learning strategies facilitate the students to speak in way, they reduce students’ anxiety so they can speak freely without being afraid to make a mistake, they increase the students’ motivation in learning speaking, and the most important the students do not think that English is a difficult subject. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of Ganre-Based Approach in teaching and learning process of speaking skill at SMPN 1 Gamping Yogyakarta. This study was descriptive qualitative. The techniques of collecting the data were observation, interviews and documentation. The data was analyzed by referring to theory of the stages of genre-based approach developed by Hammond et al., (1992). The total of the sample of this study was 28 students in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Gamping Yogyakarta. The findings showed that the English teacher still had some weakness in implementing genre-based approach. Moreover, the students still had many difficulties in generic structure and social function of the text.

Abstract

The method of this research was qualitative descriptive methodology. This research was conducted in the eighth grade students of SMP TQ Ibaadurrohman Way Jepara. The subjects of this research would be observed by research was teacher and students. The researcher observed eight class with one English teacher who teaching in the eighth grade. There were two classes namely VIII-A and VIII-B with consisted of 20, 20 students each class. The researcher took all students from each class as the subject of this research so that the total of all the students taken by the researcher was 40 students. In post-test of cycle 2, the results of the research from qualitative data. It showed the students get higher score of pronunciation test after using this technique. There are 35 students were categorized successful and passed. It means that the students’ reading comprehension was improved.
