Abstract

Two important concepts in economics represent the main ideas that this paper is concerned with, namely the concept of self-interest and mas lah ah. These two concepts will be analyzed in the light of what is commonly known as the economic rationality. The rational dimension of economy is about the individual act in consumption and production. An act in consumption and production—like in any other acts—is called rational as long as it is line with one’s logic. When an act is done not in a proper concordance with logic, then the act is not rational. Pure Capitalism in which one would justify his/her acts of oppressing others economi cally for example, cannot be called rational because it is not logical and is not in a proper consonance with the ethical values. We argue therefore that the rational dimension coupled with its ethical apparatus must represent the heart of all economic activities if a healthy economic foundation is to be established. Here we contend that self-interest—as opposed to maslahah—hasno place whatsoever in the whole schemata of rational economy. On the contrary, mas lahah is an alternative for the already hegemonic system of global economy in which self-interest is its core. Maslahah ah is to do with society-interest and not self-interest. At the end, this paper is a critique against the global capitalistic economy that has failed to establish justice and equality for all.

Abstract

This paper aims to build the concept of business risk in an Islamic perspective by making the mudarabah financing product as a starting point for the development of the theory. This research includes library research. The method of collecting data is documentation, collecting relevant library sources both in print and electronic form. The library sources were analyzed through Content Analysis with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and taking conclusions or verification. The results of the research indicate that the concept of risk that has been understood and practiced in Islamic business and financial institutions is oriented only to the materialism value. It is not in accordance with the spirit of Islamic economics. Islam views risk not only on the aspect of material gain and loss, but more importantly, Islam prioritizes the value of maslahah. Therefore, mudarabah which is considered a product that contains a high risk, for the Islamic economy, the risk inherent in mudarabah is an opportunity to achieve the ideal goal, namely the creation of benefit in the form of increasing the welfare of the poor, in accordance with the noble values contained in the mudarabah itself. The results provide an initial framework for the development of Islamic risk management discipline.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the interpretation of the Muslim housing community about the meaning of blessings in their lives and relate it to their consumption behavior, especially in determining the criteria for sellers that contain blessings. This study used a qualitative approach and data mining was carried out using interview, observation and FGD techniques. This study found that their interpretation of blessings was divided into three, namely; blessing as a transcendent value, blessing as a condition, and blessing as a means. In the context of consumption activities, their understanding of the seller's criteria states that the seller's blessing lies with three criteria, namely; sellers who are elderly and serve honestly and friendly, sellers who have the status of students, have the title hajj/hajah, and sellers are male. This finding is expected to provide consideration for the importance of the blessing factor in the formulation of the theory of consumption behavior in Islam.
