Abstract

Under the auspices of the Centre for Curriculum Decelopment, a three-cycle action research study was carried out in three primary schools in Yogyakarta with the aim of developing a model of teaching English to primary school students. The model consists of five parts: Opening, Content Focus, Language Focus, Communication Focus, and Closing. The model, requiring that learning tasks involve active participation of students, both physically and mentally, supported by the use of media suitable for young learners, was developmentally fully implemented. The results showed that efforts were mostly made to establish teacher-student rapport in the first cycle, in which success in classroom management was gradually reached. This led to the easier second cycle, which was characterized by increasing teacher talk (classroom English), the use of interesting media, and more active students participation in the tasks involving various games which successfully elicited students English. All of this was solidified in the third cycle. The conclusion is that with the three aspects being focused successively, teacher-student good rapport being established, various media being used, and competing and cooperative tasks being assigned in balance, joyful and effective learning is likely to occur.

Abstract

Then paper proposes the discussion of the signifcant role of language in developing students and the national development. Language and its role in educating people of a nation are often forgotten because they are often taken for granted. We often undermine the contribution of the language that is used to educate our nation. The language that we use to express important ideas, to deliver moral teachings valued highly by the nation, to shape the young generation’s character obviously brings with it things that the type of the language has. Language in use may not ideologically neutral. The discussion is also about the fact that language is used for learning, that is as a tool for understanding. Language is also a tool for interacting with others from which people learn. Another notion proposed is that language is the main tool in instruction especially in the classroom. In the teaching of language, the target language is used as much is possible in the course of the teaching. All parties involved in the education of the nation understand the position of the languages used in the teaching of the young generation including the foreign languages needed to develop the nation.

Abstract

Primary English provision in Indonesia has started in 1994 in which English has the position as the local content subject in the elementary schools. English has then been part of the Indonesian elementary schoolchildren’s daily routines in many different ways. In the major cities, which are geographically then educationally more privileged,  the children might enjoy their English lessons because they have the qualified teachers who know English and how to teach it to young learners, they have appropriate and interesting materials as well as  appropriate techniques  to learn by. The case is quite different for the children of the less privileged areas where access to qualified teachers, appropriate materials and fun learning is almost impossible. These children have to be content with teachers with no English or child teaching background who are hired because only them who are available. The paper  describes the struggle of  the English Education department of the Yogyakarta State University  in the development of the EFC courses  in order to contribute to the provision of  English to elementary schools in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

After the implementation of the 2013 national curriculum which excludes English from the primary school, many primary schools in Indonesia keep offering English to the students despite the uncertainty of the status of English for the primary school. However, the state of the practice of English currently in primary schools is barely unknown. This study is an attempt to portray the teachers that strive to teach English in the primary schools in one of the regencies that are still implementing English education. This survey study involved 44 randomly selected Primary English teachers (PETs) in the regency. The research instrument was a set of online (google format) and offline questionnaires. Results show that the majority of the teachers have English teaching qualification, however only very few ever attended pre-service or in-service training for teachers of young learners. The teachers also deal with employment uncertainty as primary English has no formal legal government policy. The findings bring about the issue of gaps and opportunities for professional developments of PETs and inequality in professional supports for PETs. Keywords: English for young learners (EYL), primary English, primary English teacher (PET) PROFIL GURU BAHASA INGGRIS SEKOLAH DASAR DI INDONESIA AbstrakSetelah penerapan Kurikulum 2013 yang tidak mengikutsertakan bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran pilihan muatan lokal (mulok) dalam kurikulum Sekolah Dasar (SD), banyak SD di Indonesia yang tetap menyelenggarakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam suasana ketidakpastian.
