Abstract

Abstract The lack of english mastery by Spa Therapists at Kuta become one of the problems in giving maximal service for tourist. This study aims to (1) identify the communication problems faced by Spa therapists in Kuta, (2) analyze the training and learning models of English language based on the needs of Spa therapists in Kuta, and (3) develop ICT-based English learning models for Spa therapist in Kuta. Ten experienced Spa therapists were involved as the resource persons in this study. Other data sources in this study were documents in form of English books for Spa therapists. The data that has been collected was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that (1) Spa therapists encountered some obstacles in communicating with tourists due to lack of mastery of English, (2) Spa therapists needed ICT-based English teaching materials to facilitate them in accessing materials, and (3) the teaching materials which developed 12 topics related to communication between Spa therapists and tourists can be accessed through https://-edu.com/spa/. Teaching materials that have been developed in this study can be used as teaching materials independently by Spa therapists and training instructors as teaching materials. Abstract

Most of the six species of sea turtles in Indonesian waters have seen a decline, mainly due to human exploitation. One of the efforts to prevent the extinction of this pre-historic reptiles is the establishment of conservation centers. In Bali, one of the conservation centers actively involved in the efforts to conserve turtles is the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC). As more foreign tourists who are aware of turtle conservation come to this place, guides at TCEC are expected to able to provide sufficient explanation about turtles and their environment in English. They should provide a thorough insight of the turtle's anatomy, behavior, and reproductive cycle. This study aimed at developing English module for turtle conservation guides at TCEC. In developing the module, a framework of material development model was adopted. The framework consists of some stages namely, needs analysis, formulation of goals and objectives, development of English learning materials, and evaluation. The results of this study provide some implication and contributions for English language teaching.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the English speaking skill of servers at Lakeview Restaurant-Kintamani, Bali in serving food and beverage orders, and focused on serving “A’la carte menu” orders. The problems of speaking in English often faced by servers are less confident talking to guests when handling them during breakfast, lunch or dinner. This case may be resulted by thinking of the grammatical correctness and the social functions of the sentence that we say should be done spontaneously.The results of this study would give the contribution to servers in order to improve the English speaking skills in serving food and beverage orders. Secondly, for the restaurant management in considering the policy of self-development of the servers to improve English speaking ability so that can consider the promotion policy for the servers who have speaking English skill well, and the last, the English lecturers at tourism colleges in developing approaches, methods and techniques of teaching English for communication and English for Specific Purpose (ESP).This study used a qualitative descriptive method to describe English speaking skill of 20 servers by evaluating language aspects in speaking such as the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in serving food and beverage orders of “A’la carte menu”.             Evidently, all the respondents do not have poor of English speaking skills.75% respondents has good category, 35% respondents has excellent category, and 10% has average category of English speaking skills. Based on the research, it was known that the characteristics of the sample can be fulfilled as required in the methodology of this study.
