Abstract

During crude oil and natural gas extraction from a reservoir, a large amount of water is also produced. The water fraction contains oil, grease, organic and inorganic constituents, called produced water (PW). Over the years, efficient treatment of PW has been concerned. PW has been treated with various technologies, namely floatation, filtration, coagulation/flocculation, or biological processes. Those technologies were assembled to achieve discharge standards while minimizing the cost. Exploration of membrane-based technologies for the treatment of PW has recently been reported, including the emerging forward osmosis (FO) process. This paper reviews the research progress on the FO process for PW treatment. A brief introduction to the traditional treatment technologies is first provided. Next, the basics of the FO process and research progress on the application of FO on PW treatment are discussed. Finally, techniques for fouling control in FO are reviewed, namely osmotic backwashing, ultrasound, chemical cleaning, and air sparging.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to map (1) the research of metacognition in science learning; (2) learning interventions used and metacognition’s key components that learned, integrated, and investigated; and (3) future research recommendations of metacognition research in science learning. We analyzed 438 scientific documents published in journals and books indexed in the Scopus database using VOSviewer software to visualize research trends and main keywords investigated of metacognition in science learning. The research findings show that research in the field of metacognition in science learning through the metacognition as attribution that integrated into learning interventions and as a learning outcome has increased in the last two decades. Scientific concepts understanding, critical thinking skills, motivation, and attention are the main goals in metacognition research. Inquiry-based learning, such as problem-based learning, is the most frequently used intervention to teach students metacognition. The research gaps found are (1) the cognitive regulations are the most investigated aspect, while cognitive aspects such as declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and conditional knowledge have not been widely investigated in science learning; (2) metacognition research on college students has a high frequency compared to school students; and (3) the integration of metacognition in online learning is still less investigated, this is indicated by the recommendations of several research results that encourage the integration of self-regulated learning into online learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the development of research in the field of teaching science engineering using VOSviewer. This research was conducted by creating a journal database from the Publish or Perish application and managed with the VOSviewer application to classify and visualize the database using the keyword of “Teaching Science Engineering” in the last 10 years (form 2012-2021). A total of 998 articles related to teaching science engineering were analysed and mapped. Based on the mapping results, three terms were obtained, namely “Mathematics” which was associated with 51 links and 335 link strengths; “Engineering Education” associated with 49 links and 146 link strengths; and “Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM)” associated with 48 links and 270 link strengths, respectively. In addition, an analysis of the findings showed that teaching science engineering research in 2012-2016 experienced fluctuating developments. Meanwhile, from 2017 to 2021, teaching science engineering research continues to experience a significant decline. The significant decline in 2019-2021 occurred due to pandemic conditions that impacted the teaching of science engineering related to direct practice in the field. Therefore, it is hoped that the study can help and become a reference for researchers in conducting and determining the research themes to be taken.

Abstract

Scheduling can be seen in many areas such as chemical processing, logistic, supply chain, and class. In this study, two different cases of scheduling problems are addressed which are batch reactor process scheduling and University Class Scheduling (UCS) problems. The aim for the batch reactor process scheduling is to minimize the total discrepancies between the size of the assigned reactors and their corresponding assigned capacities or reactor sizes. The approach taken into consideration includes some constraints such as desired products, the production capacities, and the reactor capacities. Meanwhile, for the UCS problem, the concern is on the number of needed courses assign to certain classrooms while at the same time noting the constraints such as the size of the classroom and the number students. The UCS problem also seeks to optimize the distribution of courses remarkably to classrooms refers to the ratio of classroom capacity to course enrolment. These issues will be resolved using Integer Linear Programming (ILP) in the form of Excel-based software. The ILP model tool for both scheduling problems, therefore, is developed and resolved using the Excel solver utilizing Visual Basic Applications (VBA) and Macro.

Abstract

This study presents the results of a bibliometric scientific literacy analysis on science education subjects. The main objectives of this study are (1) to analyze trends in scientific publications on scientific literacy in science education subjects; (2) identification of networks between authors, institutions, and countries; and (3) to understand the structure and focus of research and teaching themes of scientific literacy on science education subject. This research uses 451 published documents from 2018-2022 from the SCOPUS database. VosViewer software is used to analyze and visualize research data. The results of the research show (1) scientific publications on the topic of scientific literacy in science education subject have increased significantly in the last five years; (2) research results on this topic are published in reputable scientific journals (ranked Q1 and Q2); (3) United States is the country with the highest number of documents, citations, and institutions; and (4) there are six groups of keywords used, namely scientific literacy, science education, nature of science, students, education, and teacher education. This study recommends that research at the primary and secondary education levels by taking into account aspects of SL traits can be carried out in future research.
