Abstract

Lewak topo ceremony is a traditional ritual of Lamaholot an ethnic group in Adonara Island, East Florest regency. This ritual is performed in sacred ambience, either in its speech or supporting objects. This ritual is headed by molan 'traditional shaman' that is believed have pure personality. Ritual lewak topo consists of some steps. Each of them is espoused by ritual speech which contains symbolyc meaning. Symbolic meaning means the world view of Lamaholot people. Behind the meaning, it implies cultural values taken to be a way of behaving that is oriented in making harmonious relation in social and religious dimension.

Abstract

This study examines the social and religious meanings of Ongko Koe folksong in Manggarai speech community. The data for the research were obtained from observation, interview, recording, note-taking, and documentation. The results show that from a social point of view, Ongko Koe folksong deals with the perception of Manggarai speech community of the importance of the maintenance of unity, especially in term of wa'u as patrilinear-genealogic clan. From a religious point of view, it deals with the perception of Maggarai speech community of the existence of the Supreme God and ancestors as moral sources determining the sustainability of human life in this world. The study suggests that Ongko Koe folksong should be maintained in order to retain its social and religious meaning for Manggarai speech community.

Abstract

Research on language shift related to social factor is included in sociolinguistic research. This study is to examine the phenomenon of Helong language (HL) shift in the District of West Kupang, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. HL shift is a product of language contact and language competition which is characterized by the use of HL by its speakers that is getting lower and switch to another more prestigious one. Therefore, the phenomenon of HL shift was analyzed based on the choice of HL language use in a domain that implies HL maintenance by its speakers among generations. In order to get the expected data, this study involved 100 respondents consisting groups of 40 parents, 29 adults, and 31 children. The data obtained through data collection techniques were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative methods. It was conducted based on the attitude of language in the dimensions of language loyalty, language pride, and awareness of language norms in the domains of family, education, customs, neighborhood, government, and religion referring to the level of HL maintenance. The results showed that the phenomenon of HL shift in the District of West Kupang, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province reflected reducing number of intergenerational Helong native speakers in using their own language. The presence of Indonesian language (IL) intervening the use of language in the domains of education, government, and religion influencing the use of languages in the domains of family and neighborhood. Thus, HL is shifting towards death in the next generations.

Abstract

Marriage system in the indigenous trust describes the relationship of supernatural effect on family kinship in the community. Such the relevance is the primary identifier and the identity of the diversity of the Indonesian nation. It is inevitable that a cultureas a pillar of diversity is a buffer for entering the era of multicultural and globalization. Values of Humanist ??is the power of social relation among individuals in the community groups. This paper describes the characteristic of marriage in society of Boti in East Nusa Tenggara who hold the original trust Halaika.The results shows behaviors that indicate homage to supernatural of Uis Pah (Ruler of the Earth), Uis Oe (Ruler of Water) and Uis Neno (Ruler of Heaven) in a series of marriages that is rich of value and meaning.

Abstract

Abstract Cultural perceptions and values act as a guide to the behavior of a community. This is explained in this article in which the spotlight is focused on a description of the duel ritual among the Lamaholot people. Based on the concept that culture and language are linked, this article contains an explanation of the perceptions of the Lamaholot people towards the duel and the cultural values which are implied in the story of the ritual. The Lamaholot people view the duel as a mechanism for proving one real self. This is closely connected to the cultural value which is contained in the story of the duel ritual. The cultural values that are implied are: self-awareness, justness as a foundation for humanity, and a belief in the role of the ancestors.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Cultural linguistics is interdisipliner scientific field as interaction between linguistica and culturology. Both linguistics and cultural studies have distinctive characters, in both philosophy substance and its methodology. This article contains methodolical characteristic description, particularly in concerning with the approach applied in cultural linguistics research. The approaches mentioned consist of structural, semiotic, hermeneutic and phenomenologies, ethic and emic, and ethnographic and discourse approaches. The available approaches are relevant with cultural linguistic concept as analysis of co-variative between language structures and users of cultural structure.

Abstract

The legal register of Bahasa Indonesia has some characteristics indicating its register nature. The characteristics of the register are : (1) normative, and also manipulative, (2) logics, (3) argumentative, and (4) specific typical diction, or word choice. The normative implies to rule the society to do something and not to do something else. This gives a space to “manipulate” the language to deviate the interpretation. The characteristics of logics and argumentative is the major point of legal register, either in the formulation of a law, or in its implementation. The legal register in Bahasa Indonesia also has typical vocabulary, for example: banding, kasasi, memori banding, pleidoi, novum, and etc.

Abstract

This paper discusses about character building, knowing of language and multicultural education. The characters are not able to be developed through slogans, rhetoric, and lectures, but through natural activities which naturally reveal the attitudes, values and characters. One of the activities referred to is the use of kind of languages in society. The discourse about society cannot be separated from multiculturalism. Related with the rights and the existence of native speakers of each language, it is necessary to address the perspectives of multiculturalism differences in social and cultural interaction. Interaction process is allowing the formation of norms and values that lead to the bulding of character. Based on the scrutiny of the language varieties with different characteristics, can be identified a number of characters that can be grown and developed from the varieties of language. The character is identified through language diversity, the diversity of the repertoire, the mother language awareness, dynamism of diglossia, the characteristic choice of language, the role of Indonesian in the perspective of multiculturalism. The characters include democratic, respectful, caring social, religious, national spirit and patriotism. Thus, the varieties of languages can be a medium of education and building character within multiculturalism framework. Keywords: multilingualism, character, multiculturalism

Abstract

This article discusses the development of character, awareness of diversity and multicultural education. Characters cannot be developed through slogans, rhetoric, or lectures, through various activities that are natural in nature which indicate various attitudes, values ​​and characters. One activity that requires the use of language in a variety of grammar communities.Talks about people with various languages ​​cannot be returned from the question of diversity (multiculturalism). Regarding the rights of each language and taking its speakers, a multicultural perspective is needed to address differences in social interactions and cultural interactions. The agreed interaction process allows the formation of norms and values ​​that lead to the formation of character.Based on observing the situation of diversity with various characteristics, it can characterize that can be developed and developed from the situation of diversity. These characters were identified through various language typologies, various repertoires, awareness about motherhood, dynamic diglossia, characteristics of language choice, the role of Indonesian in multiculturalism perspective. Approved characters, among others: agreed, mutually agreed, social care, religious, national spirit and love of the motherland. Thus, diversity can be a medium of education and character development in the development of multiculturalism.

Abstract

This paper discusses about several cultural aspects of culture that can be used as a foundation for regional development. The facts show that cultural based development is not yet holistic. There are many cultural values ​​that are neglected in regional development. At least four aspects of development that can take advantage of local-traditional culture, namely: matters of livelihood, matters of government, politics, and matters of religion and belief in God Almighty. The presentation of facts regarding the four things mentioned above is a reflection of the revival of values. This reflection would spur all government policy to take advantage of aspects of local culture as a material consideration in designing and implementing development in the region.
