Abstract

High Yielding Coconut Tall Varieties Specific for Gorontalo The major constraint for coconut development program in Indonesia, including Gorontalo Province is the lower crop productivity i.e merely 1 ton copra/ha/year. Increased coconut production and productivity must be done hand in hand with coconut replanting program. To support the program, the use of high quality planting material is required. There are two options available in this matter. First, by utilizing the available coconut tall high yielding varieties suitable for agroclimate similar to Gorontalo (dry climate). Second, or most preferably, utilizing the high yielding local tall coconut cultivars. Preliminary evaluation by local estate officer indicated that there are some local coconut tall cultivars (ca. 4 cultivars) that had both high yield and oil content. This research was therefore aimed at further assessing these four promising local cultivars. Evaluation was done on those pre-determined populations in two phases, for three years consecutively, from 2006 to 2008. Parameter observed include morphological, yield of copra and its components, physiological and chemical characters as well as field resistance to pest. Results of evaluation, conducted by the ICOPRI and Dishutbun Gorontalo, confirmed that two cultivars, namely, Kelapa Dalam Molowahu (DMU) and kelapa Dalam Kramat (DKT) could be considered as two high yielding cocconut tall cultivars specific for Gorontalo. These two cultivars exhibited high productivity (above 3 ton copra/ha/year) and possess high oil content (above 64%). These cultivars have formally been released as new varieties by Minister of Agriculture in Desember 2009, to be used for high quality planting material for coconut development program in Gorontalo.

Abstract

Variation of Oil and Medium Fatty Acid Chain of Local Coconut from Different ElevationThe research was conducted from March to December 2007 by using nine cultivars of local tall from farmers plantation in North Minahasa, South Minahasa and Bolaang Mongondow regions of North Sulawesi. The sample from each regions was taken out from three different elevation. Each cultivars was selected 15 palms and each palm was taken two mature nuts. VCO processing was done using stage heating and natural fermentation. Fatty acid content was analized at BBIA-Bogor and FTP – UGM laboratories. Beside of that, has been done oil content analyzes of kernel. The result showed that elevation did not influence to oil content and médium chain fatty acid (MCFA). MCFA of VCO from stage heating process almost the same with natural fermentation process.

Abstract

ExplorationofSugar Palm (Arenga pinnata Merr) in Tomohon,North SulawesiIndonesia has high genetic diversity of sugar palm, although until now sugar palm germplasm had been collection it’s about 11 acession’s. If sugar palm acession’s not conserved, it apprehensive sugar palm’s accession which is have promising gen’s will occur genetic’s erosion. The research activity was conducted on January, 2009 at Tomohon North Sulawesi, there were Tara-tara, Pinaras and Woloan Village. The purpose of palm sugar germ plasm exploration is to increase genetic diversity of sugar palm germplasm collection which is use as breeding material in compose superior palm sugar and seeds resources in short term. The result showed that on that three villages has been found three accessions of palm sugar namely Tara-tara sugar palm, Pinaras sugar palm and Woloan sugar palm. The highest production and sugar content of toddy to be found in tall sugar palm at  Tara-tara, is about 25-38 lire/bunch/day. Selection for improvement population of three accessions is needs to carry out on production and sugar content of toddy.

Abstract

Exploration of Sugar Palm (Arenga pinnata Merr) Germplasm in East Kutai, East Kalimantan Province To broaden the genetic base of the plant, in December 2009 a mission to acquire new germplasm of sugar palm was sent to East Kutai District, East Kalimantan Province. The target location was the village of Teluk Pandan, Kandolo sub-District and village of Peridan, Sangkuliran sub-District. Mission successfully identified two types of sugar palm; dwarf type from the Teluk Pandan village, Kandolo sub-District and Tall type from Paridan village, Sangkuliran sub-District. Dwarf type is observed to have high variability in term of stem height, stem length, male inflorescence, length of male peduncle, number of males inflorescence, number of female inflorescence and time period of sap production per bunch. While Tall type has high variability in term of stem height, length of male inflorescence, the number of male inflorescence, female inflorescence, stem length, number of female inflorescence, production of sap, and period of sap producing.

Abstract

Sugarpalm Pollen Viability on Artificial MediaResearch conducted at the Plant Breeding Laboratory of Indonesia Coconut and Other Palmae Research Institute (ICOPRI) Manado, from February until April 2010. The research aims to find ways of processing sugarpalm pollen and testing techniques of pollen viability. The materials used were male flowers of the Tall type of sugarpalm. Pollen viability test carried out using a completely randomized design with 12 treatments of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 hours after sown on growth media, and repeated three times. The results showed that the sugarpalm male flower drying good for the process of pollen is to use an oven or a dehumidifier at a temperature of 35 o C - 37 o C for 30 hours. The yield of sugarpalm pollen produced an average of 1.41%. The results showed that pollen viability of sugarpalm not germinated until 12 hours after sowing, and just started to sprout after 14 hours with the percentage increasing until 24 hours after grown. Sugarpalm highest pollen viability was found on treatment after 24 hours of observation.
