Abstract

Culture is the complex whole that man has acquired as a member of society. The culture shows the result of the behavior and habits of the societies of its place. Khaled Hosseini through his novel tries to extend his thought based on his view over the sociological problem which exists in Afghanistan. This investigation aims to explain the author's world view which focuses on a novel entitled A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. The setting of the novel is in Afghanistan from the 1960s until the early 2000s. Through this novel, Khaled Hosseini describes the Sociological issues which happen in Afghanistan at that time. In analyzing the data, the author uses a descriptive qualitative method and focused on Lucien Goldmann's theory of genetic structuralism. The result of this research shows that there are some problems within Afghan society such as (1) the education system, (2) marriage, and (3) domestic violence.

Abstract

The paper focuses on discussing the kinds of mistakes made by students in their writings. The writings of the same students have previously been analyzed from which earlier form of mistakes were found. After they have studied for semesters, how are their grammatical ability now? This was the question underlying this research. The data were collected and analyzed from qualitative perspective of research. The findings show that the students still make mistakes. However, the kinds of mistakes found were mostly new and are in different level of complexity.

Abstract

This article will explore about west and east cultures in the sixteenth century and some issues which occurred when both cultures encounters. The issue that appears when both cultures encounter is that of culture shock. The purpose of this research is to disclose how culture shock happens when both culture, west and east meet. In this research, the writers use concept of culture as the foundation of the research. Further, the analysis is done by implementing Oberg’s culture shock theory. To arrange this research, the writers apply library study and descriptive-qualitative method. The data that collected by the writers are in the form of narration and quotation. The source of the data coming from a novel entitled The Tournament by Mathew Reilly. The result of the analysis shows that there are two types of culture that are found inside the novel, visible and invisible cultures. Visible culture consists of cultural artifacts that can be noticed easily. Meanwhile the invisible part of culture is a culture that cannot be noticed easily but it does exist and holds important role in human life. Further, the phenomenon of culture shock proven by the character of Elizabeth who experience all stages of culture shock which are Honeymoon stage (Excitement), Crisis stage (Depression), Development stage (Learning process) and Adjustment stage (Accepting).

Abstract

Penerapan teknologi yang tinggi, pertumbuhan peran informasi dan pengetahuan dalam pembangunan sosial dan ekonomi negara menghasilkan kebutuhan professional yang terampil. Potensi seseorang dapat meningkat jika didukung dengan keterampilan tambahan. Keterampilan menciptakan kondisi yang menguntungkan untuk pengembangan aktivitas dan bakat untuk mewujudkan Pendidikan yang terjangkau dan layak. SMA Al-Huda yang berlokasi di Kecamatan Jatiagung, Kabupaten Lampung Selatan menjadi sasaran mitra PKM karena sekolah ini menyediakan berbagai fasilitas penunjang Pendidikan bagi siswanya, serta memiliki guru-guru yang kompeten di bidangnya. Kegiatan belajar mengajar juga ditunjang oleh ekstrakurikuler, organisasi siswa, komunitas belajar, tim olahraga, dan perpustakaan sehingga siswa dapat belajar dengan maksimal. Dengan sumber daya yang baik ini, sangat disayangkan jika tidak ditunjang dengan pengetahuan yang mungkin belum maksimal ditunjang di sekolah. Oleh karena itu, Tim Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia menjadikan sekolah ini sebagai salah satu mitra Sekolah Binaan dengan memberikan materi mengenai literasi keuangan.Kata kunci: Keterampilan, SMA Al-Huda, Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas kegiatan pengabdian yang dilakukan sebagai bentuk kepedulian Fakultas Sastra dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia khususnya Program Studi Sastra Inggris terhadap penerapan ilmu yang dimiliki untuk bisa berdampak kepada masyarakat. Dalam penerapannya, bukan hanya para dosen yang melaksanakan pengabdian ini. Para mahasiswa dari mata kuliah Interactional Conversation juga adalah ujung tombak dari program pengajaran yang dilaksanakan. Para dosen bertugas untuk berhubungan dengan mitra, mengawasi mahasiswa dalam mempersiapkan materi dan melaksanakan pengajaran, serta memberikan arahan tentang hal-hal yang perlu diperhatikan. Kegiatan ini dinamai Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris We Care We Share. Sebagaimana tersirat dari namanya, diharapkan agar melalui kegiatan ini mahasiswa semakin peduli dengan masyarakat sekitar dan mewujukan rasa kepedulian tersebut dengan cara berbagi ilmu yang mereka miliki.

Abstract

 Skills create favorable conditions for the development of activities and talents to achieve affordable and decent education. One of the additional skills that can be developed is the ability to speak English. Besides being an additional skill, English is also part of the education curriculum of high school students. This community service provides basic English training for students especially for Al-Huda High School students to improve their skill in English. We developed students’ skills by teaching steps to learn English in four ways: vocabulary, tenses/grammar, fluenting, and naturalizing. Mastering vocabulary is the main thing to learn English. Students are very enthusiastic in participating in this basic English training. This training really helps students to understand the basics of English, which is packaged in an attractive form, so students are very easy to understand. In addition, in this training students are not only invited to understand in theory, but also in practice such as singing songs in English.Keywords: Skills, English, Education, Community Service.
