Abstract

Tomato is a horticultural crop that is widely cultivated in Indonesia because of its multipurpose uses. The prospect of marketing tomatoes is quite promising for local, national and export markets. The demand of tomato consumption has been increasing, but has not been supported by the availability of quality and quantity production. The area for tomato production has even been decreasing, especially in West Java, Indonesia. One of the causes of the low tomato production in Indonesia is due to the unavailability of superior varieties at the farm level, and very limited information on suitable farming technology. In addition, farmers have difficulty meeting supermarket and export standards because of the mismatch of the quality required by the market and the quality of the products. Efforts that can be made to improve the quality of tomato fruits includes the use superior varieties, and to apply better management of crop production. This study aims to determine the tomato variety which is suitable and high yielding to grow in Tamansari sub-district, Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia, and to understand the effects of thinning fruit on tomato production. The study was carried out from August to November 2018 in Taman Sari, Tasikmalaya City, in a completely randomized design with tomato variety and fruit thinning as the treatments. The study used three tomato cultivars, “Betavila”, “Tymoti”, “Martha”. The levels of fruit thinning tested were 15%, 25%, and without fruit thinning as control. The results demonstrated that the choice of tomato variety and fruit thinning had very significant effects on the yield component of tomato. “Marta” is one of the suitable varieties suggested to be cultivated in the area in Tasikmalaya, and fruit thinning at 25% gave the highest fruit yield.

Abstract

One of the main products of sunflower is the seed which is a producer of vegetable oil that is needed in the pharmaceutical industry and the health sector. The price of sunflower seed oil is currently very high for the market but sunflower production in Indonesia is quite low. This potential can be used as the basis for the development of sunflower cultivation in Indonesia. One of the efforts to increase the content of sunflower seed oil is to improve proper cultivation techniques and modifications in cultivation techniques. One of the cultural techniques in increasing production is to get the right dose of nitrogen (N) fertilization. The addition of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) is expected to increase the absorption of N nutrients in the soil, thereby increasing the growth and yield of sunflowers. This study aimed 1) effectivity of AMF and nitrogen fertilizer application with various doses on growth and yield of sunflower, 2) to obtain the right dose of N fertilizer on growth and yield of sunflower The study used a Split-plot Design with 3 replications. The first factor as the main plot is AMF i.e. F0 = without AMF, F1 = with AMF 5 g hole-1. The second factor as a sub-plot is the dose of urea fertilizer with 4 levels i.e. N1 = 50 kg N Ha-1, N2 = 100 kg N Ha-1, N3 = 150 kg N Ha-1, N4 = 200 kg N Ha-1. Observations data were evaluated by analysis of variance if the obtained F count was greater than F table 5% followed by a further test of DNMRT at the 5% significant level. Result showed 1) the effectivity of AMF and nitrogen fertilization on sunflowers was able to increase the number of leaves, accelerate the initiation of flowering, increase the diameter of sunflowers, total seeds per plant, the weight of 100 seeds, and seed production per plant, 2) Economically, the application of nitrogen fertilizer with a dose of 150 kg N Ha-1 is more appropriate in increasing the growth and production of sunflowers

Abstract

Reforestation is an effort to restore, maintain and improve the condition of the land so that it can be used optimally according to its original function. Several steps to realize the reforestation of the residential environment in a narrow area include utilizing the existing land, choosing suitable plants, and providing utmost care. This activity aimed to increase public understanding and knowledge regarding narrow land for reforestation in urban areas. The method used was a direct approach, namely, conducting interviews with the community and holding outreach and direct demonstrations in the field. The result of this empowerment activity was that the communities, especially the residents of Palimo Indah, are very enthusiastic about participating in the greening of the environment. The selected plants consider their multifunctionality for the environment's good, such as the absorption of air pollution and family medicinal plants. The three tree seedlings are useful for reforestation and have economic value, namely the Sungkai plant, Petai tree, and Agarwood sap-producing plant. Planting has been carried out at several location points by collaboration as a form of community empowerment, namely on the park's outskirts and on the riverbanks in the Palimo Indah, Pauh District, Padang.

Abstract

Land conditions in Sungkai, Padang City, have slopes and high rainfall. The causes low water absorption capacity. For this reason, it is necessary to plant plants that can help increase water absorption, one of which is bamboo plants. This activity was carried out on November 6, 2021, to empower the community of farmer groups in the Andalas University campus with a focus group discussion on agricultural issues and planting bamboo trees. The activity consists of four stages: preparation, counselling/socialization, focus group discussion, and field practice. There are five main problems to solve. The issues found are 1) how to handle flooding in the river; 2) how to control plant-disturbing organisms without using chemicals; 3) new land clearing methods so as not to damage the environment; 4) how to obtain and treat good seeds and seedlings before planting, and 5) farmer group dynamics and their resolution. Planting bamboo is one of the steps to deal with the problem of flooding. Bamboo has a very tight, broad, and strong root system to strengthen the soil structure and withstand water runoff. Bamboo plants can also become new hosts of pests that damage cultivated plants. The service team synergizes with extension workers to understand bamboo, which can be an alternative in sustainably conserving soil and water.

Abstract

The main feed for ruminants is forage, and its supply fluctuates greatly depending on the season. During the rainy season, the forage will thrive and be abundant, but the opposite condition, i.e. dry season, where farmers will have difficulty getting fresh forage. Meanwhile, animal feed must be continuously available. The solution is to use agricultural waste as an animal feed with limiting factors, namely high lignin content, low digestibility, low protein content, and anti-nutrients. Therefore, a feed processing technology known as Ammoniation is needed. Ammoniation is a chemical treatment of agricultural and plantation waste feed ingredients by adding chemicals like NaOH, KOH, or Urea. Ammoniation can reduce lignin and silica and increase protein content. Socializing ammoniation technology in the Ambacang Permai livestock farmer group, Lima Puluh Kota District, was necessary. The method included lectures, demonstrations of making rice straw ammoniation, discussions, and consultations on animal feed. This activity was expected to help group members to overcome the problem of providing ruminants' feed from crop residues and plantation waste, so it was expected to reduce feed costs and increase group business.
