Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the effect of bokashi livestock on the growth and yield of tomatoes. The experiment was conducted in Bandar Lampung from October 2009 until February 2010. The experimental design was randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The treatments were: control; inorganic fertilizers at a recommended rate of (kg ha-1) 135 N, 75 P2O5, and 110 K2O (RR); chicken manure bokashi + RR; chicken manure bokashi + 50% RR; cow manure bokashi + RR; cow manure bokashi + 50% RR; sheep manure bokashi + RR; sheep manure bokashi + 50% RR; horse manure bokashi + RR; horse manure bokashi + 50% RR. Each bokashi treatment was applied at the rate of 20 ton ha-1. The result of experiment showed that chicken manure bokashi was the best among bokashi livestock. The application of 50% RR combined with chicken, cow, sheep or horse manure bokashi gave a higher yield than treatment with inorganic fertilizer at recommended rates. These results demostrated that the application of bokashi livestock could potentially reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers while maintaining higher yield. Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate the application of plant compost on the growth and yield of tomatoes. The experiment was conducted in Bandar Lampung from October 2009 until February 2010. The experimental design was completely randomized block design with 3 replications. The treatments were: control; recommended inorganic fertilizers 135 kg N ha-1, 75 kg P2O5 ha-1, and 110 kg K2O ha-1; white leadtree (Leucaena glauca) compost + recommended inorganic fertilizer; legume compost + 50% recommended inorganic fertilizer; teak (Tectona grandis) compost + recommended inorganic fertilizer; teak compost + 50% recommended inorganic fertilizer; paddy straw (Oryza sativa) compost + recommended inorganic fertilizer; paddy straw compost + 50% recommended inorganic fertilizer; rattlepod (Crotalaria anagyroides) compost + recommended inorganic fertilizer; rattlepod compost + 50% recommended inorganic fertilizer. Our results showed that rattlepod and paddy straw composts gave similar results in tomato growth and yield, and they were better than other plant composts tested. The application of 50% inorganic fertilizers combined with plant compost had the higher yield as compared to recommended inorganic fertilizer treatment. This implied that the use of plant compost could reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers while maintaining higher yield than using inorganic fertilizers only. The soil chemical properties was improved after application of plant compost. Keywords: inorganic fertilizer, plant compost, tomatoes

Abstract

A study was carried out to determine the effect of 1-MCP applied to intact tomatoes differing in maturity stage onquality of stored tomato slices. 1-MCP (1 μL L-1, 20 °C, 12 h) was applied directly to intact tomatoes from ‘turning’, ‘pink’,and ‘light-red’ stages of maturity. After slicing, slices were stored for up to 10 days at 5 ºC. 1-MCP maintained slice qualityduring storage following treatment of intact ‘turning’ and ‘pink’ maturity fruit as indicated by higher titratable acidity, higherascorbic acid concentration, and lower lycopene content.1-MCP treatment did not signifi cantly affect soluble solids andelectrolyte leakage. Slices from ‘light-red’ maturity stage fruit did not respond to 1-MCP. The results show that applicationof 1-MCP to intact tomatoes was effective in maintaining tomato slice quality if 1-MCP is applied to fruit at early (‘turning’and ‘pink’) stages of maturity. Keywords: 1-methylcyclopropene, soluble solids, acidity, ascorbic acid, lycopene, electrolyte leakage

Abstract

Processes such as  slicing tomato fruits disrupt the plant tissue so the products become more perishable compared with the intact fruit. Ethylene production is stimulated during the slicing of fresh cut tomato slices.  Experiments were conducted to investigate if ethylene absorbent and exogenous ethylene influences the quality of tomato slices cv. ‘Revolution’ during storage at 5°C.  In the experiment of ethylene absorbent, experiment was laid out in a completely randomised design.  The treatments were plus 10 g and minus ethylene absorbent (KMnO4; PurafilÒ; 5°C for 12 d).  In the experiment of ethylene concentrations, experiment was laid out in a completely randomised design.  The treatments were exogenous ethylene concentrations of 0 (control), 0.1, 1 or 10 mL L–1 respectively (5°C for 6 h).  In both experiments, the treatments were replicated 5 fold.  Results showed that ethylene absorbent resulted in reduced ethylene accumulation, and CO2 accumulation in enclosed containers, and firmer slices.  Ethylene applied 2 days after slicing stimulated the rate of ethylene production, CO2 production, and produced softer slices during storage. Changes in soluble solids concentration and titratable acidity development were independent of ethylene effects.  These experiments showed that ethylene produced by slicing or introduced exogenously had an undesirable effect of accelerating softening of tomato slices.

Abstract

Maintenance of quality traits is important during storage of fresh-cut produce.  Changes  in firmness, in tomato for instance, are ethylene-mediated.  The objective of this study was to determine the suitability of the ethylene antagonist 1-MCP in maintaining the quality of tomato slices.  Fruits of tomato cv. ‘Revolution’ were harvested at the ‘pink’ stage of maturity, treated with 1 mL.L-1 1-MCP for 12 hours at 20 ºC, and sliced.  Slices were stored as vertical stacks in closed plastic containers at 5 °C for up to 10 days.  Exposure of intact tomatoes to 1-MCP reduced ethylene production and respiration rate in slices, and produced firmer slices than when intact tomatoes were treated without 1-MCP.    When intact tomatoes, at the ‘pink’ maturity stage were treated with several concentrations at 1-MCP (0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 mL.L-1) at 20 °C for 12 h, 1-MCP reduced both ethylene production and the respiration rate, delayed softening of the pericarp and inhibited loss in acidity when compared with slices from fruit not treated with 1-MCP.   The most effective concentration of 1-MCP for inhibiting the ethylene-induced softening of tomato slices was 1 mL.L-1.
