Abstract

One of the opportunities to strengthen the resilience of local languages is through local content subjects. The unavailability of reference standards in developing local content curricula in primary schools confuses teachers in projecting the targets to be achieved. The unavailability of the competency standard formulation has caused the field of study of local content to differ from one elementary school to another. Currently, the field of study of local content is taught by teachers who do not have special qualifications. Some teachers are appointed with religious education, sports education, art education. With this background, teachers often do not have references to representative local languages have not mastered the rules of local languages well. Under these conditions, training and mentoring efforts are needed. This service activity is carried out with a strategy starting with need assessment, FGD, curriculum formulation, teacher assistance, and monitoring and evaluation. This service aims to awaken teacher and student awareness about the importance of maintaining local languages and references in learning local content in the form of draft teaching materials.

Abstract

Idiomatic expressions are expressions whose meanings cannot be derived from their literal meaning. Thus, it is viewed as a challenging part for EFL learners in either understanding or practicing them. However, using them in oral spoken adequately signifies that someone is a proficient English user. This research is carried out to depict the learner's application of idiomatic expressions in spoken English. It is performed to address the accompanying examination questions: (1) Do EFL learners of the English Department in IAIN Takengon use idiomatic expressions in speaking? (2) What type of idioms do they produce in speaking? (3) What is the most frequently used idiom type in their speaking?. 20 students' recordings were collected and analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The result shows that the learners use idiomatic expressions. The learners produced only three types of idiomatic expressions, namely phrasal verb idiom, tournures idiom, and irreversible compound idiom. Of all, phrasal verb idiom is the most frequently used. It is suggested that the learners are encouraged to be exposed to English more often to apply more idiomatic expressions in their speaking.

Abstract

The study used three steps from Miles and Huberman's theory to analyze the data, including data reduction, data display, and conclusions. The results showed that the students face five difficulties in learning English amidst the pandemic comprising learning disorders, learning disabilities, learning dysfunctions, underachievers, and slow learners. Among those five, slow learners become the most dominant difficulty, while learning disorder is the least problematic aspect for the students. Several issues that are likely to cause difficulties are a continuous practice of multiple-choice questions without being given a context, avoiding class, lack of interest in learning English, weak ability to learn fast, and reduced learning hours.
