Abstract

This research discusses the types of code-mixing based on the characteristics of insertion. Mixing of the language is the insertion of a word or phrase of one language to other language where one language as a base or matrix language. A person who has mixed is if he or she uses a word or phrase from another language. Otherwise, the phenomenon of mixing occurs, if a person uses one clause which has the grammatical structure of one language and after that, it is constructed based on the grammar of another. The phenomena of code-mixing can also occur in English students’ communication. Therefore, this research aims to find out what are the characteristics of code-mixing insertion found in the utterances of English Department students in Putera Batam University. Data were collected by using a non-participant observation, recording techniques and transcription. Analysis of the data refers to the Musyken’s code-mixing typology toward the utterances between Indonesian and English.  After analyzing the data, there are two insertional code mixing found, single constituent and morphological integration. Single constituent occurs dominantly because the habit of the student in replacing some of words in English into Bahasa Indonesia. Morphological integration happens when the students tend to add affixation into some words in English thus the possibility of insertion created frequently. Key words: Code mixing, single constituent, morphological integration.

Abstract

Menghadapi Era Globalisasi yang sarat dengan kompetisi, masyarakat dituntut untuk memiliki bekal sumber daya manusia yang handal. Bersamaan dengan itu, berbagai ragam latar belakang dan keterampilan setiap individu bebas untuk bermain dalam dunia persaingan dan tidak menutup kemungkinan orang-orang luar negeri ikut serta di dalamnya. Jelas ini menjadi perhatian serius yang harus dibenahi mengingat tidak sedikit dari sumber daya manusia di negeri ini yang bisa dikatakan kalah dari negara-negara lain. Salah satu isu yang menjadi pembahasan banyak kalangan adalah bahasa. Bahasa merupakan modal utama untuk dapat berkomunikasi. Ironisnya, permasalahan yang terjadi di masyarakat yaitu penggunaan bahasa dengan tingkat kesantunan yang baik dapat dikatakan masih jauh dari baik. Khususnya kesantunan berbahasa dalam bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, dalam upaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas berbahasa yang baik, maka akan sangat penting bagi masyarakat untuk memahami bentuk-bentuk kesantunan dalam berbahasa khususnya bagi anak-anak remaja yang membutuhkan pembinanan pada lembaga pembinaan khusus anak (LPKA). Dengan kemampuan berbahasa yang baik, khususnya kemampuan dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris, hal ini dapat membantu meningkatkan kualitas komunikasi para remaja binaan yang dapat bermanfaat bagi mereka dikemudian hari. Abstract

Abstrak Penulisan karya tulis ilmiah jenis penelitian tindakan kelas telah menjadi sebuah kebutuhan dasar bagi para guru sekolah sebagai salah satu syarat dalam pengurusan kenaikkan pangkat dan golongan untuk setiap guru. Guru dituntut untuk mampu meneliti di dalam kelasnya dan memecahkan permasalahan yang terjadi di dalam kelasnya sendiri dengan menggunakan berbagai media dan sarana yang kreatif. Maka dari itu, pemerintah menetapkan kenaikan pangkat dan golongan tenaga pendidik wajib dengan melakukan penelitian. Berdasarkan pengamatan tim Pengabdi pengabdian terhadap para guru Sekolah Menengah Pertama di kota Batam, fenomena penelitian tindakan kelas bagi para guru untuk kenaikan pangkat mereka menarik minat tim Pengabdi pengabdian untuk mengadakan kegiatan pengabdian yang bersifat pembinaan pada guru-guru komunitas MGMP mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia di kecamatan Sekupang, kota Batam. Tentunya hal ini sejalan dengan tujuan para guru yaitu sebagai ajang pembelajaran untuk menghasilkan karya tulis ilmiah yang berguna dalam Pengabdian kenaikan pangkat dan golongan mereka,kegiatan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat menambah pemahaman dan pengetahuan para guru terhadap karya tulis ilmiah dan mengasah kemampuan dan skill penulisan karya tulis ilmiah jenis penelitian tindakan kelas. Dari kegiatan pembinaan ini juga diharapkan agar para guru mampu terhindar dari plagiarisme dimana banyak ditemukan kasus plagiarisme pada karya tulis ilmiah usulan kenaikan pangkat guru. Out put dari kegiatan ini adalah proposal penelitian tindakan kelas yang dibuat oleh guru-guru komunitas MGMP mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia sebagai peserta pembinaan.

Abstract

This research primarily aimed to analyse the types of the illocutionary act proposed by Searle (1979),  secondly to find the dominant type produced by both sides, between barista and customers’ utterances at Starbucks coffeeshop Changi Airport. This research applied observational method and non-participatory technique as the way collecting the data. The design of this research were qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is applied to analyse the data in the form text. In contrast, quantitative research used to count the number of utterances, to conclude which types of illocutionary acts find dominantly during the conversation. It was found that directive, representative, and expressive types were in the utterances. Meanwhile, commissive and declaration type did not find in the utterances. The result from this study showed that directives illocutionary act as the most frequently found in utterances, because the communication which takes place in coffeeshop between the baristas and customers usually only needed to ordering and just give information (informing).

Abstract

Writing is the most difficult and complicated language skill which is learnt by almost the students in every level of education. Moreover, writing English is an inseparable part of students throughout their academic life. They commit different kinds of errors and mistakes in learning English as a foreign language which are due to poor knowledge with grammar, thus itoften appears to be a difficult task for them to write. These problems are very obvious in writing composition or any other essay. Some mistakes are normally made by students when they do not understand well about the English grammar. Commonly, many of the students make grammar mistakes in their English language learning especially in productive skill such as writing. Problems in foreign language learning especially in English areunavoidable. They are difficult enough to be avoided. Therefore, this research analyzed students’ problems in grammar that could be seen from their writing to see the correlation of grammar toward writing ability. It was important to do because the analysis could give some advantages for both students and lecturers as language teaching achievement. As the result, most of EFL University students had problem in grammar. They made error inusing kind of tenses. The problem could be seen from their writing which used wrong verb in the sentences. And, it made their writing incorrect. Moreover, it proved that there was a significance correlation between problem faced in grammar and writing ability of EFL university students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the grammatical errors found in Sri Mulyani's speech as Indonesia's Minister at the Singapore Summit (2018). The data was taken from the interview on the YouTube channel Singapore Summit, a video that was 37 minutes long. The limitations of this problem were the grammar errors and types of tenses. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection method used was observation. Data was collected by watching and hearing, and then the transcript was written. Data analyzed with grammatically incorrect words or sentences is then collected and classified based on the type of error. After all the data has been classified, the results of the study were displayed descriptively. The result found 35 data related to grammatical errors. There were three types of errors found in the use of the verb be; adding a suffix of s/es; and the past form of the verb. In the whole data source, in the use of the verb be, it was found to have 10 data. Then, it was found 20 data of adding a suffix of s/es, and an error in using tense consisted of 5 data.

Abstract

Deixis is part of pragmatics that people make in communication. In this research, the researchers analyzed deixis in utterances and the movie “Bird Box” is data source. The movie is 2018 horror movie that has deixis in the movie. The researchers analyze all utterances in the movie. This descriptive qualitative research found out types deixis in utterances of characters. The researchers used observational method with the technique of non-participatory. The pragmatic identity method with competence- in equalizing were used by the researchers. Then, the researchers use the theory from Yule (2017) to analyze deixis types that characters make. The findings show that deixis were used in the communication of the movie. There were totally 34 deixis data in spatial deixis, temporal deixis, and person deixis. 16 were in spatial deixis, 12 data in person deixis, and 6 data in the temporal deixis. The dominant is spatial deixis used by the characters to point places to other hearers in Bird Box movie.
