Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine strategies used b,v students of English Study Program of FKIP UIR quantitatively and qualitatively in order to solve the problems in the course of Speaking. The population is the students rwho are taking Speaking 3 in which the sample is all population of this study due to the homogeneous oftheir characteristics (the aspects of academic achievement). For quantitative data, Strategy Inventory for Language Leaming (SILL) (Oxford, 1989) is used while as for the qualitative data, interviews were commenced. The findings show that the highest use of the strategy is social strafegy (3:26) and the lowest one (3:04) is memory strategy, 4 other strategies (cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and compensation) are in the medium category. The qualitative findings cover four elements: (1) Grammar (memorizing the tenses and using them in daily life, finding the solution in grammar books, finding examples of compound sentences and meaning, studying the complex sentence, and looking for the explanation on the use of preposition), (2) Vocabulary (consulting the dictionary, memorizing the vocabulary items, finding the explanation on intemet, and translating the text), (3) Fluency (practicing general and basic grammar, applying the phrases in daily conversation, and learning more about the difference between clauses),and (4) Pronunciation (often downloading video of spoken English, finding the correct pronunciation of the word in the dictionary, practicing the reading aloud, identifying the intonation pattern. and practicing a lot). The implication of the study is that language leaming strategies used quantitatively and qualitatively should be instructed to the students of Englisli Study Program of FKIP UR especially for those who are taking Speaking 3.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between language learning strategies used by successful students of senior high schools in Dumai, Bengkalis, and Selat Panjang based on type of school, and academic factors. In addition, this study also aims to identify the strategies used by the respondents to learn English in general, four language skills, vocabulary, and structure. The population of the study are all successful students from senior high schools in Dumai, Bengkalis, and Selat Panjang. The number of the population is about 4000 students. Due to the homogenous characters of the population, the sample are taken randomly as big as 10 % or 400 students out of the population. The quantitative data are collected by using Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) (Oxford; 1989) while interviewing section is conducted to 60 selected students taken from the sample in order to get the qualitative data. Descriptive and inferential statistics are used to analyze the data on the use of the language learning strategies (SILL). One-Way Anova is used to determine the differences of language learning strategies usage based on academic, and type of school. The findings show different language learning strategies among the students based on type of school, and academic factors. The students used social strategy (mean: 4.02) as the most effective strategy. The implication of the study is that language learning strategies should be taught in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the competence of students’ English language (TOEFL Equivalent) at Riau University Pekanbaru and the factors associated with (gender, parents economic background, and majors in high school). The research Population is Riau University students who take the TOEFL Prediction in 2015/2016 - approximately 7,000, - students. The samples were taken at 5% of the total population of 350 students. TOEFL Prediction - compiled by UP2B Universitas Riau - used to collect data. The results of this study are as follows: a) the average score of TOEFL Equivalent Riau University students are 372, b) the averag scores of female students slightly higher (374) than the average scores of male students, c) the average score of economic students parents medium slightly higher (376) than the economics student parents low, and d) the average score of students whose background natural science (IPA) also slightly higher (378) than the students background knowledge social knowledge (IPS). The implications of the findings of this study are students need training intensive TOEFL Prediction on aspects of listening (mini - talk), reading comprehension (reading comprehension - the main idea and supporting ideas), and grammar / writing expression (sentence error).
