Abstract

The problem of this research was how to improve the students’ ability to write English using the picture word inductive model strategy. The research type was a collaborative action research. The subject consisted of 26 students of the second graders of MTs NW 2 Rensing Lombok. The research data were collected using four kinds of instruments, which were the writing tasks, observation checklist, field notes, and a set of questionnaires for collecting data on the students’ ability in improving the students’ ability to write English using the picture word inductive model strategy. The reflection was based on the findings during the observation and compared to the criteria of success including: (1) by using the writing tasks, the students’ writing achievement improved (≥75% students of the class achieved the score greater than or equal to 60 of the range that lies from 0-100), and (2) by using an observation checklist and field notes, the students were actively involved in the ten writing activities. The findings indicated that using the picture word inductive model strategy was one of the strategy could improve students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraphs. After the researcher conducted the first and the second cycle, it was shown that the result of the first and second cycle improved

Abstract

The problems of this study are to what extent is students’ ability in using four parts of speech for the third semester of English Program of STKIP Hamzanwadi at Selong, to what extent is students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph to use appropriate words form for the third semester of English Program of STKIP Hamzanwadi at Selong? And to what extent is correlation between students’ ability in using four parts of speech and their ability in writing narrative paragraph for the third semester of English Program of STKIP Hamzanwadi at Selong? In this study, the researcher took 40 students as the sample. Moreover, in collecting the data he used tests as the instrument. The data analysis, the researcher used inferential statistic research, while in hypothesis testing used formula of “r” technique. Based on the result of data analysis, it was known that the mean score (M) for students’ ability in using four parts of speech was 5.5 and the Standard Deviation (SD) was 5.85. It means that students’ ability in using four parts of speech of the third semester of English program was included average category rank and the mean score for students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph to use appropriate word forms of the third semester of English program was 4.33 and the standard deviation was 4.69. It means that students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph to use appropriate word form was included average category rank too. Furthermore, in testing hypothesis, it was known that rxy was 0.69 and r-table at 5% was 0.325 and at 1% was 0.418. It was concluded that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted because rxy was higher than r-table. Based on the results of the data analysis and hypothesis testing, it could be known that there was positive correlation between students’ ability in using four parts of speech and their ability in writing narrative paragraph

Abstract

The teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking is necessary for university students to have basic skills of oral communication. Using critical debate technique in the teaching of EFL speaking might be beneficial to help students improve their speaking skills. As critical debate is a medium where the students can train their argumentative competence in form of debating process that demands them to communicate their opinions, argumentations, statements, and other substances, which support their position in the debate process. The aim of this research was to investigate the use of critical debate technique to improve the speaking skill of the sixth semester students of IAIH NW at Pancor. Based on the data of preliminary study, it was found that the students encountered many problems in their speaking class such as; the students had low motivation and reticence to speak, poor grammar and vocabulary, and had some errors in pronunciation. With regard to the problem, this classroom action research was conducted to solve those problems occurring in the speaking class. This research was a collaborative action research in which a collaborator assisted the researcher to collect the data using speaking scoring rubric, questionnaire and field notes. This research was conducted in two cycles focusing on the improvement of the students’ speaking performance and their positive attitude to the implementation of critical debate technique in the speaking class. After the implementation of critical debate technique in the speaking class for two cycles, it revealed that the use of critical debate technique could improve the students’ speaking performance and give them positive attitude to the implementation activities. The findings showed that the average score of the students’ speaking performance could achieve 85.11 from the determined score 75. In addition, it was also found that 84.13 % of the students had positive attitude to the implementation of the use of critical debate technique in the speaking class. The implementation of the use of critical debate technique in speaking class can cover a procedure of three main phases: The first phase is to speak out, second listen to different kinds of opinions and the third at the end respecting those differences. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the use of critical debate technique can be one of the solutions to improve not only the students’ speaking skills but also the their’ positive attitude in the teaching of speaking. Therefore, English teachers are suggested to use critical debate technique to teach their students in speaking class.

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of Question-Answer Relationship to improve the first semester of PAI students of IAIH NW Pancor. This study was conducted to overcome the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension and encourage the students to actively participate in the teaching-learning process through Question-Answer Relationship. The study was designed for collaborative classroom action research. The finding of the research that were conducted in two cycles showed that QAR strategy was worthy to improve the students’ reading skills and activate the students to participate in the teaching-learning process of reading. The students’ average score developed significantly from 59.00 in the pretest to 71.33(equal to 20.89%) in the first cycle. It developed to 74.33 (equal to 25.98%) in the second cycle in the scale of 0 – 100. Moreover, the findings of the study also described that this strategy improved the students’ participation. The students’ participation was 88.10% (equal to very good) in the first cycle and 88.39% (equal to very good) in the second cycle.

As teaching media, video can offer audio and visual model of target language as complete stimuli. Therefore, English teachers are suggested to use the video as teaching media to teach their students in speaking class and it is also possible to teach other language skills or components.

Abstract

This research is designed to improve the students’ writing skill in English through storytelling technique. This research involved 42 second semester students of PAI Program of Tarbiyah Faculty of IAI Hamzanwadi NW Pancor. The objective of the research is to apply the procedure of storytelling technique to improve the students’ writing skill. The method applied in this research was a classroom action research. The data of the research were gathered through observation checklist, questionnaire, and writing test. The finding showed that storytelling technique was successful in improving students’ writing skill. The improvement could be seen from the improvement of students’ scores in writing test. Besides, the finding also showed that storytelling technique can improve the students’ involvement and enhance their interest in learning English, especially in writing.
