Abstract

The present study aims to analyze how translation in news reports can be seen unethical even though news report and translation are two aspects that should be guaranteed for its credibility, actuality, and precision. In analyzing this issue, a case of mistranslation in news reporting the Copenhagen shooting in 2015 that was published by detik.com was studied. To obtain the data, several news reports regarding the same issue that was published by several news portals around the globe in the same period of time were collected. Several reports from Indonesian news portal were also collected to see whether there was a similarity in presenting the content. The corpus-based analysis was also conducted to analyze the characters portrayed in the reports published by detik.com regarding the shooting. The result shows that only detik.com presents the mistranslated fact in the report, meanwhile the other Indonesian news sites report the contrary. The corpus-based analysis found that among the portrayed characters, Detik.com seemed to create an impression which leads the readers to think that there were two opposing sides; the suspect of shooting as the representative of the Muslim; and the cartoonist and the Ambassador which represent the non-Muslim. The mistranslated facts at detik.com seemed to please the Moslem side since, as a news site published in a country which majority citizens are Muslim, the readers of detik.com were also Moslem in the majority.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper aims to examine the application of the concept of feminism at the level of the American family through the analysis of a song entitled Dear Future Husband, sung by Meghan Trainor, an American singer. In analyzing this phenomenon the author uses the concept of feminism which is promoted by Kate Millett (1970) and mimetic approach. From the results of this study, it is found that in this song, the concept of feminism is still not fully applied in the family sphere. This is because women, as the subject of feminist understanding, still do not fully want this concept for themselves. Keywords: feminism, family, Meghan Traynor, America AbstrakMakalah ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji aplikasi konsep feminisme dalam tataran keluarga Amerika melalui analisa diskursi lagu berjudul Dear Future Husband yang dinyanyikan oleh Meghan Trainor, seorang penyanyi berkebangsaan Amerika. Dalam menganalisa fenomena ini penulis menggunakan konsep feminisme yang diusung oleh Kate Millett (1970) dan pendekatan mimetik. Abstract

Even though the major problem of dyslexic readers is in their phonological awareness, morphological complexity of a language might also affect their performance in reading, especially for language with transparent orthography like the Indonesian language. This study aims to find the patterns of morphological deviations produced by Indonesian dyslexic adolescents during a reading activity.  In this study, a set of instrument consisting of 160 words that were chosen based on their morphological complexity is prepared. The words were then combined into 55 sentences which then were asked to be read aloud by the participants. The result of morphological deviations indicated that the deviations occured equally frequent both in inflectional and derivational affixes. Most of the morphological deviation (i.e. 96%) occured in polymorphemic words. In addition, participants tend to simplify the polymorphemic words by omitting the affixes and reading only the root instead. At least 58% of the deviations were affix ommision. This means teachers of dyslexic readers need to provide more training on polymorphemic words, particularly those that have affixes.

Abstract

The complexity of a reading process often becomes an obstacle for students with dyslexia, particularly those studying in bilingual schools. To date, few studies discuss the Indonesian-English bilingual dyslexic student’s reading processes when they encounter reading texts in both languages they are acquiring. This study aimed to investigate the tendency of a dyslexic student’s reading comprehension in reading texts in the Indonesian and English language. This was done by comparing the reading comprehension of a second-grade Indonesian dyslexic participant (age=9) and four control participants. Two sets of reading instruments, written in the Indonesian language. The keywords used in each language were taken from participants’ textbooks. There were two types of sentences in the reading instrument; highly contextual sentences and sentences which is in accordance with participants’ background knowledge. After reading each sentence, they were asked to answer comprehension questions about each keyword. The scoring was based on their answer accuracy. The results were analyzed based on the reading comprehension theories proposed by Kintsch and Rawson (2005). The results showed that the two groups used different strategies to comprehend the text but the dyslexic participant's reading performance was lower than the control participants' performance in both languages. The results suggested that the dyslexic participant’s reliance on his background knowledge and lack of ability in retrieving appropriate keywords were the sources of his poor reading performance. Practices to improve skills in retrieving background knowledge and utilizing working memory span are suggested.

The research was conducted by observing the interaction of the tour guide and the guests during the trip. The observation was conducted for three months from January to March 2020. The participants of this research were a female tour guide and several foreign guests that came from several different countries. The data showed that cross-cultural differences that occurred were in the form of Ethnic Culture, Universal Culture, and Individual Culture. Language and punctuality became the most obvious barriers as the guests sometimes did not share similar language for communication as well as similar point of view about the punctuality. The tour guides used listening and respecting differences strategies to cope with the conflicts that occurred. These two methods were also effective in preventing problems due misunderstanding that were caused by the cross-cultural differences.
