Abstract

In the pre-modern world people generally believed in the supernatural. Individuals and culture as a whole believed in the existence of God (or gods), angels, and demons. The visible world owed its existence and meaning to a spiritual realm beyond the senses. However, such worldviews began to die with the coming of Enlightenment of 17th and 18th centuries. The age of reason, scientific thinking, and human autonomy that characterized the Enlightenment brought to being the so-called natural religion. The result was the disappearance of immanent God (Deism) and the rejection of the socalled “excluded middle” – the unseen world of spirits, and the supernatural. Such attitude may well be summarized in Rudolf Bultmann’ famous statement: “It is impossible to use electric light and the wireless and to avail ourselves of modern medical and surgical discovers, and at the same time to believe in the New Testament worlds of spirits and miracles.”

Abstract

Few studies have been devoted to early Pentecostal eschatology.1 One of them, that of by Gerald T. Sheppard merits special attention. Sheppard’s article attempts show that “Pentecostals were not originally dispensationalist-fundamentalist and that the efforts secondarily to embrace such views have raised new problems for the identity of Pentecostals – hermeneutically, sociologically and politically.”2 The procedure taken by Sheppard is to investigate early Pentecostal eschatology as reflected in the writings of some early Pentecostal figures. Unfortunately, he excludes some important earliest Pentecostal figures such as Charles F. Parham, William J. Seymour, and G. F. Taylor. Moreover, some important Pentecostal writers, such as Daniel W. Kerr, that merit special attention due to their distinctive eschatology, have been left out. It is the purpose of this paper to fill “empty space” within Sheppard’s article. It will investigate specifically the eschatological views of Pentecostal writers prior to 1920. The conclusion certainly affirms the Sheppard’ thesis that originally the Pentecostal eschatology was not purely dispensational. Besides, it will be shown that early Pentecostal views on eschatology were not absolutely uniform.

Abstract

Flame of Love is written by Clark Pinnock of McMaster Divinity College, one of the most evangelical stimulating theologians today. It is basically a one-volume systematic theology with the Spirit as its central motif. Chapter one discusses the Spirit and the Trinity. Here, Pinnock develops a relational (or social) model of God which views Godhead as a community of love and mutuality.

Abstract

---- Abstract Work/career is often opposed by family, church, and society. If so, should we take the step of 'faith' by ignoring work for the sake of family, church or society. Of course it's not a wise choice. What needs to be done here is a balanced life.
