Abstract

Background: Quercetin is one of the active substances in propolis which has many benefits for human health as antioxidant, anticancer, antiallergy, cardioprotector, gastroprotector, lowering blood pressure, and increase the body immunity. Quercetin content in propolis is influenced by geographical factors, differences in the season, climate, plants, bees, and the type of solvent. This study aims to determine differences of quercetin levels of propolis in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Methods: This study uses observational analytic methods. Samples of propolis were sold in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Sampling was done by purposive sampling as many as six brands of propolis which is divided into 6 groups: P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6. Each group was measured five times. Determination of quercetin in propolis by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer method of Prussian Blue. Data were analyzed for quercetin levels with one-way ANOVA statistical test using the computer program SPSS 17 for windows. Results: Average of quercetin levels of propolis samples obtained results P1 = 9.4440 ± 0.06465 µg/mL, P2 = 4.4760 ± 0.08591 µg/mL, P3 = 10.2700 ± 0.04000 µg/mL, P4 = 7.4120 ± 0.06648 µg/mL, P5 = 8.6780 ± 0.03347 µg/mL, P6 = 8.4960 ± 0.10877 µg/mL with  p < 0.001. Conclusion: There are differences of quercetin levels of propolis in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Keywords: Propolis, quercetin levels, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Prussian Blue

Abstract

Background: Propolis contains flavonoids. One of them is quersetin.  Solvent used is propolis extraction influence quercetin level of the extract. This research aims to determine whether there is a difference of Quercetin Level in Ethanol Extract Propolis and Water Extract Propolis. Methods: This research is an experimental research. Subject of this research is propolis from Gejen RT 3 RW 2, Kerjo, Karanganyar. The samples were carried out by purposive sampling. Concentration of quercetin is determined by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer by Prussian-blue methode. Five samples are made for each extract. The data then analized using unpaired t-test by SPSS 17 for windows. Results: Averages of quercetin level  in this research   are 10,0480±0,53798 µg/mL in Ethanol extract propolis and 1,0440±0,06804 µg/mL in Water Extract propolis with p < 0,05. Conclusions: There are differences in there is a difference of quercetin content in Ethanol Extract Propolis and Water Extract Propolis. Abstract

Background: Propolis contains quercetin, a substance from flavonoid group which is usually found as its glycoside form and its polarity changes to polar character. More polar of the solvent used, the greater flavonoid compound obtained. Consequently, it leads to different amount of quercetin gotten by different solvents on propolis extraction method. Method: This research used the post test only group design. Aluminium chloride colorimetric assay was applied to determine the amount of quercetin obtained from both ethanolic and propylene glycol extracting procedures. The data were statistically analyzed by independent t-test method. The propolis was collected from Kerjo, Karanganyar. Result: Total dissolved quercetin in ethanolic extract and propylene glycol extract were 63.38 ± 13.14 µg/mL and 45.69 ± 8.70 µg/mL, each, p < 0.05. Conclusion: This research significantly showed that the quercetin level of propolis extracted with ethanol higher than the one extracted with propylene glycol. Abstract

Backgrounds: Orthosiphon stamineus Benth leaves contain various antioxidants like flavonoids, organic acids, and terpenoids. The main active chemical substances which are derived from flavonoids, namely sinensetin, and non-flavonoids, namely rosmarinic acids, have antioxidants activities as free radical scavengers. This study aimed to determine the effects of Orthosiphon stamineus Benth leaves extract in decreasing the levels of ALT in male strain Swiss webster mice induced by reheated cooking oil. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory with a post test only controlled group design. The samples were 25 male strain Swiss webster mice, 2-3 months old and + 25-30 grams weight, each. Samples were taken incidentally sampling, arranged into 5 groups randomly, consisted of 5 mice each group. The control group (K) was administered distilled water and treatment group 1 (P 1) were administered reheated cooking oil. While treatment group 2 (P 2), treatment group 3 (P 3) and treatment group 4 (P 4) were consecutively administered 3.5 mg, 7.0 mg and 14.0 mg/25 gr BW of Orthosiphon stamineus Benth leaves extract and reheated cooking oil for 14 days. On the 15th day, blood samples were drawn from the mice through plexus retroorbitalis using microtubuler tube then their ALT levels were measured. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and followed by Post Hoc Multiple Comparisons test (LSD) (α = 0.05). Results: Mean rate of alanin transaminase level in group K, P 1, P 2, P 3 and  P 4 were  54.600 + 7.765 U/L;  – 95.000 + 23.537 U/L; 62.200 + 7.463 U/L; 60.400 + 6.427 U/L and 57.400 + 10.922 U/L, in a row. Conclusions: Orthosiphon stamineus Benth leaves extract decreased alanin transaminase level in mice induced reheated cooking oil.
