Abstract

The globalization has been influential to not only those living in urban area but also those living in hinterland such as the Katab Kebahan Dayak of Melawi District in West Kalimantan. The community members, in fact, have actively engaged with the modernization to support their needs in daily life. Moreover, the Pemekaran Wilayah (the making of a new territory for a District) of Kabupaten Melawi has prompted social changes in the region and promoted social interactions among ethnic groups in the society. Politics of identity has shown to grow. In addition, many aspects of social changes including politics, education, economics and local culture have become influential to the growing of ethic awareness. The Katab Kebahan Dayak identity is a confirmation of the growing of ethnic awareness in the region.

Abstract

The perspective on Isa al-Masih or Jesus has been one point of separation and a source of endless tension between Islam and Christianity. While Western tradition believes that Isa al-Masih is the son of God, Islam ensures that Isa is the son of a human being, a servant of God or a prophet and a messenger of God. This paper is not intended to resolve this debate, but through a thematic study by examining verses that reveal about Isa al-Masih in any verses in the Qur?an, wants to show that despite theological differences in the views of Isa al-Masih between Islam and Christianity cannot be avoided. However the meeting points between Islam and Christianity is very strong and that is in the Qur?an called Kalimatun sawa? which makes both emphasize peace rather than conflict. Isa al-Masih is seen by Christians and Muslims as a respected figure and has a prophetic mision of freeing the weak and oppressed people. Therefore, in Islamic tradition, Isa al-Masih is considered as the apostle of ulul azmi or the liberator Prophet.

Abstract

Social media plays a very important role in shaping the identity and trends in todays world. Not only for the young generation, almost all people in every generation have also been “addicted” to social media for their daily need and in other processes through assimilation and integration and building new networks in their communities through online and offline activities. As a result, the emergence of the social media as a medium of communication and information today has many impacts on changes of social structure including the religious identity of its users. This article explores the tendency for the development of religious identity in social media among the Ponianak Muslim community by focusing on the typology of social media users among Pontianaak Muslims and various trends in the religious identity of its users. The work suggests that social media users in the Pontianak Muslim community have three main typologies, namely NetPublisher, NetWorker, and NetAdvocate. And the religious identity tendency of social media users in Pontianak is constructed through religious narratives dominated by conservativism discourses. They are seen through at least three aspects including the tendency of religious affiliation, various religious issues that are often discussed, and responses to trending religious issues in social media by Pontianak Muslim netizens.

Abstract

The article is based on the fact that ?jomlo? or being single has become a new trend as a sociological phenomenon and the product of the practice of hijrah within the life of Muslim youth, especially Indonesian Muslim students. The concept of dating for those who practice the "men-jomlo" is very important in this work today. They, in fact, have unintentionally started to create a new culture of being njomlo although they are not being involved in a community designed for those practicing njomlo. This work attempts to provide analytical discussions on the concept of dating according to the students who practice the njomlo, what they mean by jomlo to halal, and their motivation to practice the njomlo. With the support of qualitative data, the work provides important findings on the practice of njomlo by the students of IAIN Pontianak. First, generally, the students agree that dating tends to lead to negative than positive attitudes so that they decide to choose being single or njomlo until they get married for halal relationship. Second, they believe that Islam does not have a concept of dating as understood by the youth today in the modern world and there is no Islamic dating. Third, religious conciseness has become the main element to motivate them so that they tend to rather choose to practice njomlo until they find their halal wife as they say ?jomlo sampai halal."

Abstract

Since the early 20th century, villages in the city of Yogyakarta has started to become villages of tourism following the government promoting tourism in the region. Originally carrying local and cultural identities, those villages appear to be touristic, accommodating the needs of the visitors. This work attempts to explore how this social phenomenon happening to two urban villages within the city namely Kampung Kauman and Kampung Prawirotaman. It focuses on explaining how the villagers actively play their roles in the neighborhood in social and cultural processes within the new environment and physical space.  The appropriate data found in the field is analyzed accordingly to the research questions by employing a qualitative approach.  The work suggests that cultural identity has changed in these two urban villages as a result of the influence of external values promoting the redefinition and redesign of public and social space. Besides, it also finds that delegitimization of the identity of Kampung and communality dislocation has occurred due to tourism purposes. The new formulation of the Kampung does not only reflect the emergence of new ideology and tradition but also stimulate resistance, conflict, and negotiation. This study recommends the importance of mentoring programs from the strategic stakeholders for better space and cultural transformation leading to the prevention of the damage of local wisdom basis within urban communities.
