Abstract

Apart from being an entertainment medium, literature has also an important role in exposing social problems, as basically literature is born and is intended for the community. Through the disclosure of social problems, the role of literature is increasingly developing, among others, as a medium of teaching, reference, reflection, character building and also criticism. Thus, it is clearly illustrated that literature has multifunctional roles. The message conveyed through literature can be effectively absorbed by the community owing to the entertainment factor. Through the poem “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”, Thomas Gray tells the story of the lives of marginal people, always having to face problems. Through descriptive qualitative research method, referring to social phenomena, supported by sociology of literature approach, the results of the study show that there are three social problems that always arise in the community, especially in the lower class one: poverty, right to get proper education and equality to obtain opportunities in the line of life. These three social problems are closely interrelated so that they become a unification undermining the lives of marginalized people.

Abstract

Euphemisms in the form of non-offensive or subtle expressions to replace the one felt to be insulting or unpleasant become guidelines in social interaction, essentially, using words with good meanings or intentions. Euphemism can also be interpreted as an expression that is not straightforward, the driving motive behind the development of pejorative, motivated by a natural human attitude, avoiding conflict by not hurting or offending other people. If there were no euphemisms, there might be depression or demeaning of meaning. This research is focused on the functions of euphemism in the short story entitled Guru written by Putu Wijaya with the concept of the functions of euphemism in speech acts. The research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method related to social phenomena, in this case the uses of euphemism either in a literary or social text. The results show that out of the 15 data obtained, there are 12 data referred to the function of euphemism as a means of speech refinement (80%), 2 as a means of diplomacy (13%, and 1 keeping something secret (6%).

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the symbolic meanings of Kembar Mayang conducted at Desa Medan Sinembah Kecamatan Tanjung Morawa Kabupaten Deli Serdang predominantly by Javanese ethnic. Kembar Mayang in this study is concerned with the Javanese wedding ceremony. Descriptive qualitative method is applied in the study describing social phenomena occurring naturally aiming to help us to understand the world in which we live and why things are in the way they are. The main theory to support the study is the theory of Semiotic. The results show there are five forms of symbolic meanings in Kembar Mayang: Manuk-Manukan as symbol of Loyalty; Uler-Uleran of Struggle; Walang-Walangan of Persistence; Pecut-Pecutan of Optimism and Keris-Kerisan of Wisdom. The five forms of rites are compulsory in the wedding ceremony with the main objective to achieve a happy, harmonious and peaceful life for the bride and the bridegroom and this is in line with the general concept of marriage.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the causes of anger. Anger a basic human emotion, as elemental as, gladness, sadness, anxiety or disgust. These emotions are tied to basic survival and are honed over the course of human history. Anger is related to the “fight, flight, or freeze” response of the sympathetic nervous system:  it prepares humans to fight. But fighting does not necessarily mean throwing punches; it might motivate communities to combat injustice by changing laws or enforcing new behavioral norms. This is the positive trait of anger though in many cases only the negative ones are seen. Everyone experiences anger at some point. It becomes problematic, however, when the frequency or severity of anger interferes with relationships, work performance, legal standing, or mental health. All these points are faced by the main characters of the novel. The whole research is done by means of descriptive qualitative research, exposing the social features, in this case anger. The research results show that there are causes of anger found through the study: past experience and lack of problem-solving ability. Owing to traumatic past experiences, one of the main characters does a kidnapping and on the second point, the inability of solving problems, makes another main character filled with anger.

Abstract

The poem is one of Pablo Neruda’s finest collections, containing undivided feelings for someone with picturesque comparisons with life and spiritual elements. The poem depicts a person’s selfless and pure love for another. It is about two choices a boy has given to a girl, whether the girl will forget him or come to him. While the first half of the poem is incredibly romantic and flattering, the third and fourth stanzas paint a very different picture, and they serve as a warning to Neruda’s mistress. The third stanza stands on its own, cautioning Neruda’s lover that if she stops loving him, he will do the same in return. It also begins the first in a string of ultimatums Neruda offers to his lover. The study is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method, showing social pictures, in this case matters of love. The grand theory used is taken from Steinberg’s triangular theory of love. The results show that harmony in love could be obtained by means of intimacy, passion and commitment.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the psychological problems on the protagonist and the negative impacts caused by the psychological problems in Faye Bird’s novel My Second Life published in 2014. Psychological problem are disorders of cognitive, volition, affective, and psychomotor generating to psychological disorders characterized by abnormal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The two aspects of the problems are in reality get into the corridor of psychology, a study about human’s soul or mind, either about its symptoms, processes, or its background. As literature is a reflection of society, all the characters are also members of literary community leading to a concept that psychology and literature are closely related.  This novel is about a teenager who experiences various psychological problems after finding out that in her first life she has been the cause of someone’s death. This study is conducted to give an overview to all people about the negative impacts of psychological problems experienced by the protagonist. This study applies qualitative method going through social phenomena and the data are collected from the novel. The results show the psychological problems are depression, anxiety and trauma causing negative impacts in the forms of insomnia, lack of concentration and truancy.

Abstract

This research focused on teaching narrative text through mind mapping technique. The objectives of this research were to know and describe the process of teaching narrative writing using mind mapping. The data of this study were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching-learning process during the implementation of the actions and interviewing the students and the collaborator about the implemented actions. The qualitative data were in the forms of field notes and interview transcripts. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained by assessing the students’ writing skill through the pre-test and the post-test. Therefore, the quantitative data were in the form of students’ writing scores in the pre-test and the post-test. The results of this study showed that the use of the mind mapping was effective to improve the students’ writing skill. The use of colorful pictures of mind mapping in the BKOF and MOT stages was effective to make the students more enthusiastic in the writing activities. The writers found that the student’s problems in writing were that the students were confused to develop their ideas because they did not have many vocabularies. Furthermore, the students had problems in matters of capitalization, punctuation, grammatical error, and organization. They also needed too much time to finish their writing.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing Philia as friendship in Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Longest Ride, published in 2013. The analysis is focused on the categories of Philia as friendship covering utility, happiness, and moral done by the major characters of the novel, namely Ira Levinson, Ruth, Luke Collins, Sophian Danko. The method used to analyze this study is a descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the researchers apply the theory of philia as friendship proposed by Aristotle. Philia is one type feeling of love in the Christian and Greek traditions based on friendly relations. Other types of love that are also in Christian theology are eros, agape and storage. The results show that the categories of Philia as friendship:  utility, happiness and moral are reflected and done by the major characters. Utility is seen from Ira and Ruth with strong and healthy love relationship. Happiness is seen through Ira and Ruth who always feels happy when they see each other. Moral can be seen through the trust of Ira and Ruth who always share each and everything together.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the protagonist of the story suffering from Asperger Syndrome. He finds difficulty in social interaction, be it appearance, language, attitude, or thinking. In addition, he has got an intelligent ability to interpret objects around him well. He has also the ability to make patterns of activities that he does every time. The whole analysis is conducted by means of qualitative research method supported by library research. The grand theory used is on autism, picturing Asperger Syndrome as an autism spectrum disorder on the high functioning end; referred to as “dash of autism”. Asperger syndrome, also known as Asperger’s, is a developmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. The results show that the protagonist of the novel has got some significant features of Asperger Syndrome: Lacking of Social Activity, Ability of Interpreting Object, and Ability to Set Routine Patterns.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the causes of conflicts in Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s Novel Bumi Cinta which was published in 2019. The causes of conflicts derived from internal and external factors are the focus of the study. Through this study it is found that Ayyas can protect himself from the temptation that attacks his faith. He also surrenders himself to God so that he could be saved from all disturbances that come at any time to him. He is very angry with Linor who regards that his religion is a primitive one. The method used to analyze the causes of the conflict in this study is literary descriptive approach proposed in which it is shown that qualitative research methods are complex, changing and contested field site of multiple methodologies and research practices. The research results show that the main character faces internal as well as external conflicts in the forms of temptation and difference in perception.
